Top 18 Best Japanese Double Eyelid Tapes in 2020 - Tried and True! (Automatic Beauty, Shonan Beauty, and More)

We’re in the age of J-Beauty. It’s almost ludicrous looking at the waves of actresses and models with their tiny faces and huge doll-like eyes. But you’ve figured out one of their beauty secrets, the reason behind those ingenuous eyes: double eyelid tape.

Double eyelid tape made its way to the West pretty recently, so it makes sense that you’d be confused about what makes one product different from another. (There’s double- and single-sided tape, but what else…?) In order to help you out, we ordered the 18 most popular packs of double eyelid tape from Japan’s e-commerce giants and tested for the following:

1. Finish (whether you actually get double eyelids / how convincing it looks)
2. If You Can Apply Makeup over It
3. Ease of Use
4. Water Resistance
5. Ease of Removal

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional double eyelid tape.

How to Choose Double Eyelid Tape – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the packages of tape, but before that, we want to introduce five things you should look out for when picking out double eyelid tape.

① The Tape You’ll Need Depends on the Type of Eyelids You Have

There’s three main types of double eyelid tape, and it’s important to choose according to the kind of eyelids you have. Let’s talk about their main characteristics and how to use them.

Thick Eyelids Call for Double-Sided Tape

Thick Eyelids Call for Double-Sided Tape
Double-sided※1 tape is good if you’ve got thick eyelids or like a really deep fold. To get a bit graphic, the tape pulls in pieces of skin on either side of itself and sticks them together, resulting in a distinct crease.
That also means that it’s going to suck in a lot of flesh. Therefore, if you go for a really big crease, you might feel some tugging when you try to close your eyes. It’s pretty easy to get dry eye if you’re not careful.
※1 両面: double-sided

Thin Eyelids Call for Single-Sided Tape

Thin Eyelids Call for Single-Sided Tape
Single-sided※2 tape is good if you’ve got thin or hooded eyelids※3. Single-sided tape is only sticky on one side, and it wedges itself into your flesh, creating a fold along the upper edge.
Since it doesn’t actually stick bits of skin together, single-sided tape won’t tug on your eyelids and make it difficult to blink. However, it can be easy to tell when someone’s using single-sided tape–depending, of course, on the product and the way that person does his or her makeup.

※3 奥二重: hooded eyelids

If You Want to Be Discreet, Use Fiber Tape

If You Want to Be Discreet, Use Fiber Tape
If you don’t want anyone to know you’re wearing double-eyelid tape, then try ones made out of fiber※4 or cloth※5. These are thin strips of fiber that you lay on your eyelids so when you open your eyes, they wedge themselves into your skin, forming a crease. When it comes to discreetness, fiber tape can’t be beat.
But there’s one big downfall. A single piece of fiber tape is really long, so after application, the ends will jut out of the crease; you’ll then need to cut those extra bits off with a special scissor. So this stuff adds an extra step to your makeup routine and there’s a learning curve. However, once you get used to fiber tape, it doesn’t take long to apply at all.

② Get Something You Can Cover with Makeup

② Get Something You Can Cover with Makeup
It really sucks when your double eyelid tape gets in the way of your makeup. It sucks just as much when you apply makeup over the tape, but you can still tell that you’re wearing double eyelid tape. You want to always wear eye makeup along with double eyelid tape, by the way, to make everything look more natural.
That’s why you should toss tape that comes off with makeup or otherwise looks conspicuous or messy.

③ Make Sure the Tape’s Easy to Apply and the Fork Easy to Use

③ Make Sure the Tape’s Easy to Apply and the Fork Easy to Use
Many packages of tape come with what’s called an eyelid fork, which is a pronged tool or rod you push into your skin. You use it to determine where a crease would fall most naturally along your eyelid. Sometimes, you actually need the fork to apply the tape correctly, so it’s important you take a look at the directions and make sure everything’s easy to use.
Likewise, the tape shouldn’t be too complicated either; the faster you can apply your double-eyelid tape, the shorter your makeup routine will be. Of course, you learn this kind of stuff from personal experience, which is why we’ve tested all the products for you.

④ If You’re Sporty, Get Tape that’s Resistant to Sweat and Water

④ If You’re Sporty, Get Tape that’s Resistant to Sweat and Water
Generally speaking, double eyelid tape is more resistant to sweat and water than glue. Even so, if you’re worried about it coming off, know that there’s super-strength tape (and glue) that have been designed to last through anything.
If you’re active and know you’re going to be sweating or swimming, then look for tape that is water and sweat resistant.

⑤ But You Also Want Tape that’s Easy to Remove

⑤ But You Also Want Tape that’s Easy to Remove
The skin on your eyelids is incredibly delicate. To avoid irritating it, get tape that’s easy to remove. This holds true for everyone, but it’s especially crucial to do so if you have sensitive skin.
If you need to tug and pull to get double eyelid tape off, you’ll damage your skin over time. To keep your skin healthy far into the future, look for tape that you can remove with just a gentle massaging motion.

Test ①: Finish (whether you actually get double eyelids / how convincing it looks)
Test ②: If You Can Apply Makeup over It
Test ③: Ease of Use
Test ④: Water Resistance
Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Test ①: Finish

Test ①: Finish
We tested to see, first of all, whether the tape actually gave you double eyelids and, second, whether the double eyelids looked convincingly natural.
We had two girls with hooded eyelids from our editing department test each and every product and tell us which gave them the double eyelids of their dreams.

The Big Takeaway: Narrow Double-Sided Tape and Fiber Tape Look Most Natural, but Non-Woven Fabric is Really Obvious…

The Big Takeaway: Narrow Double-Sided Tape and Fiber Tape Look Most Natural, but Non-Woven Fabric is Really Obvious…
Narrow double-sided tape and fiber tape gave us the most convincing double eyelids. Single-sided tape also worked, but it just didn’t look as natural.
If you have particularly thick eyelids, then wider double-sided tape might work best for you. For our two girls from the editing department, however, too much of their flesh was folded together and they couldn’t really blink. Some tape also peeped out from beneath their skin. Just remember, the thickness of your eyelids will determine the width of the tape.
Tape made out of non-woven fabric also looked obvious–to the point that it’d be difficult to conceal, even with makeup.

Test ②: If You Can Apply Makeup over It

Test ②: If You Can Apply Makeup over It
Next we tested whether or not we could apply makeup after putting on double eyelid tape.

The Big Takeaway: On the Makeup Front, Both Single- and Double-Sided Tape Had Their Disadvantages

The Big Takeaway: On the Makeup Front, Both Single- and Double-Sided Tape Had Their Disadvantages
Basically, we could apply makeup over all the tape, but depending on whether it was single- or double-sided, we had unique difficulties. When we used double-sided or fiber tape, eyeshadow tended to collect in and along the groove created by the tape.
On the other hand, a lot of single-sided tape was glossy. Even the products that were made out of cloth were easy to spot, even with makeup on. You’d have to layer on a lot of eyeshadow to keep others from noticing you’ve got double eyelid tape on.

Test ③: Ease of Use

Test ③: Ease of Use
Next, we checked to see if the forks were easy to use and the tape was easy to handle.

The Big Takeaway: The Smaller the Pusher, the More Difficult to Use. Single-Sided Tape is Easiest to Use and Remove

The Big Takeaway: The Smaller the Pusher, the More Difficult to Use. Single-Sided Tape is Easiest to Use and Remove
When we weren’t given a pusher, we found it harder to pick up tape or make a natural-looking crease. Being given a tiny pusher was almost just as bad.
As for the tape itself, single-sided was the easiest to handle. It was also the easiest to pick up, though it of course depended on the backing paper and the stiffness of the tape as well.
Double-sided tape was just too sticky. We had a lot of issues with removing it from the backing paper–and when we did manage to remove it, it would bunch up into a ball right after. As for fiber tape, it was kind of scary cutting off the ends with scissors.

Test ④: Water Resistance

Test ④: Water Resistance
Next, we tested for water and sweat resistance.
We sprayed our eyelids with a mist bottle to see if the tape would come off with just a tissue, or whether there was any change from before and after the misting.

The Big Takeaway: Clear Single-Sided Tape Resists Water

The Big Takeaway: Clear Single-Sided Tape Resists Water
There were quite a few pieces of tape that didn’t show much change, even after we sprayed them with water; however, the type that was the most consistently water resistant was clear single-sided tape.
As for fiber and double-sided tape, some of the products we tested came off the moment we sprayed them with water, or at least the ends started peeling. They probably wouldn’t work well at the beach, pool, or anywhere else you’d get wet.

Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Test ⑤: Ease of Removal
Finally, we checked to see how easy each piece of tape was to remove.
If the product itself recommended a specific removal method, we’d use that; if not, we gently massaged our eyelids with a cleansing sheet.

The Big Takeaway: Fiber Taper Only Needs to be Gently Massaged 2 or 3 Times Before It Comes off

The Big Takeaway: Fiber Taper Only Needs to be Gently Massaged 2 or 3 Times Before It Comes off
Both of our girls from the editing department found fiber tape to be the easiest to remove. They only needed to gently massage their eyelids in a circular motion 2-3 times with a cleansing sheet for it to come off. As long as you make sure to use some kind of makeup remover, you won’t have to worry about damaging your skin.
We also had products that were so sticky they wouldn’t come off even when we rubbed at our eyes, or tugged at our eyelids so hard they started hurting. Even after we got the tape off, our eyelids kept stinging–so we resolved to never use those products again.

Tips on How to Make Nice Double Eyelids with Tape

Double eyelid tape has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it, it’s a breeze. And in order to speed up that learning process, we’ve introduced some tips and tricks to make you a double eyelid master.

Wipe all the Oil off Your Eyelids

Wipe all the Oil off Your Eyelids
Make sure you’ve wiped all the oil and dirt off your eyelids with a cotton pad or puff before applying double eyelid tape. The only exception, of course, is tape you’re supposed to apply over makeup. Otherwise, any oils or dust on your eyelids will make the tape less sticky.
The cleaner your eyelids are, the better your tape will fit and the longer it’ll last.

Don’t Try to Make the Crease too Big. Look for a Natural Place to Put the Groove

Don’t Try to Make the Crease too Big. Look for a Natural Place to Put the Groove
Put on double eyelid tape only after you’ve found where a crease would fall most naturally along your eye. If you consistently wear tape in that same spot, your skin will start folding more easily over time.
You definitely don’t want to force it and make your crease too big. If you’ve been keeping up with trends, you might have heard that parallel eyelids are ideal. But whether or not the parallel eyelid look will take easily to you depends on the shape of your eye and the thickness of your skin.
If you try to force parallel eyelids onto yourself, the look will be unnatural–plus, the tape might start peeping out in strange places. So be gentle and find where creases would fall most naturally along your eyes.

More Tips on How to Be Discreet about the Fact You’re Wearing Double Eyelid Tape

If you don’t want anyone to find out you’re wearing double eyelid tape, you can’t rely on the product by itself. You also need some good eye makeup. Here are some tips and tricks on how to apply shadow to make your double lids look as natural as possible.

Eyeshadow that’s Glittery but Close to your Skin Tone Works Well

Eyeshadow that’s Glittery but Close to your Skin Tone Works Well
Eyeshadow is the ultimate camouflage for double eyelid tape. If you get something pearly or glittery, the shine from your eyeshadow will mask the gleam from the tape.
Also, eyeshadow that’s closer to your skin tone, such as brown or orange, will hide tape better than more outlandish colors, like blue or pink.

If You Get Eyelash Extensions or Apply Fake Eyelashes, It’ll Hide Tape Even More

If You Get Eyelash Extensions or Apply Fake Eyelashes, It’ll Hide Tape Even More
We recommend pairing double eyelid tape with extensions or a good pair of fake eyelashes. All that hair will go a long way in overshadowing the tape.
The base of fake eyelashes also serves to push the bottoms of your eyelids upwards, so if you apply lashes with tape, you might find it easier to carve out your double eyelids.

If the Ends of Your Tape Peek out, Bury Them with Glue or Eyeliner

If the Ends of Your Tape Peek out, Bury Them with Glue or Eyeliner
Double eyelid tape always starts peeling off from the ends. If you’re worried about your tape slowly unsticking itself throughout the day, here are two preventive measures you can take.
First off, you can use liquid eyeliner to draw a thin line extending from the end of your double eyelid tape–like you see in the picture above. The line looks like shadow cast by the crease, and it helps hide the corners of the tape.
You can also use double eyelid glue to further seal together the flesh at the ends of your tape. It’s worth a try, especially if you’re someone who would rather not super glue an entire crease into your eyelid every day.

If You Don’t Know Where to Cut Fiber Tape, Try on Either End of your Iris

If You Don’t Know Where to Cut Fiber Tape, Try on Either End of your Iris
You should stretch fiber tape out until it’s about 8-10 cm long and lay it along the crease. You’d then cut the front so that it starts above the inner rim of your iris (that is, the side closer to your nose bridge) and the end so that it stops about 0.5 mm behind the outer rim of your iris.
The two girls from the editing department also cut their tape around where the circles are displayed above, and they were both happy with the results they got.
Also, remember that while you want to stretch out fiber tape well and good, you don’t want to overstretech it. Aim for about 8-10 cm, and you should get a natural fit.

Things to Keep in Mind When Removing Double Eyelid Tape

Things to Keep in Mind When Removing Double Eyelid Tape
Please don’t rip off double eyelid tape by force. The skin on your eyelids is very delicate, and you run the risk of damaging it if you treat it too roughly.
When you remove tape, use either a cleansing oil or water and gently massage your eyelids. After the ends of the tape have curled up, gently peel it off while holding down your eyelids.

Summary

We found two girls with differently shaped eyes from our editing department, purchased the 18 top selling packages of double eyelid tape, and had them test them all. Here’s a message from one of the girls:
Usually, I use the tape that came in third when I sleep, just to get my eyelid to fold more easily along that crease. But after I tested all of these products, I wanted to try mezaik’s free fiber because it was so discreet.
Take advantage of all the tips and tricks we introduced above, and you should get used to double eyelid tape pretty quickly. We hope our experiences helped you find the tape and crease that’s most suited to you.

Let’s get this straight–there’s no such thing as a “best” hair dye. Strictly speaking. Just like there’s no such thing as a “best” concealer or “best” mattress or “best” jacket because it all comes down to you. What kind of skin do you have? What kind of sleeping posture? Do you get cold easily? This time around, we ordered the 10 most popular hair dyes found in Japanese drugstores and on Japan’s e-commerce sites and compared the following:1. How vivid the color was2. How long the color lastedHowever, we want you to keep in mind that the Japanese hair dyes we introduce were formulated with Japanese (naturally black, bleached Asian) hair in mind and are most effective on hair of a similar quality. If you’ve hair like that, great–you’ll probably find that it works better than your average box of CVS/Walgreens stuff, especially Liese Prettia Bubble Hair Color (our number one pick). It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass. We might not be able to prevent aging altogether, but we can still age gracefully. That feels like the consensus here in Japan, where anti-aging skincare is popular and constantly evolving.
