Also, are the boots thermal insulated? Recently, companies have been releasing technology such as “Omni-Heat” and “Outlast” that warm you up–using your own body heat. Boots with inserts also keep your feet toasty, as well as ones that have a drawstring at the top to close your boots tight.
They use the same kind of technology that keeps your car tires from skidding off the road. At the store, check out the shape of and materials used in the soles. Are they slip-resistant? Hint: soft soles are a safe bet because they don’t slip on ice. Rubber is also pretty grippy!
We also recommend going for something light. When you’re trudging through valleys and hills of white, boots with spikes or thick outer soles get heavy real fast. Ideally, you want about one pound per shoe. These won’t tire you out, even when the land is laden with snow.
Larger sizes–by about a quarter to a half an inch–leave a layer of air between the elements and your toes, shielding you from the cold. And you can fit in good, thick socks.
You're going to need more than a pair of boots to keep out the cold this season. Here are some of our recommendations.
