10 Best Tried and True Japanese TVs in 2022 (Audio and Visual Journalist-Reviewed)

Japan has always been a major exporter and global leader in electronics, especially TVs. 4K TVs have four times the pixel count of HDTVs, improving your sports and movie viewing experience with sharper graphics. There are two main types, LCDs (liquid crystal display) and organic LEDs (light-emitting diode). However, with major manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba to smaller manufacturers such as Hisense making various options, it can get confusing to figure out what makes the brands different and which is the best for you.

To help you in your search, we gathered the 17 best-selling Japanese TVs from e-commerce sites popular in Japan (such as Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping) and tested them all.

We then ranked the 10 best Japanese TVs based on our tests. We also put together a buying guide to help you choose the best Japanese TV in 2022.

What New Features Do Recent Japanese TVs Have?

What New Features Do Recent Japanese TVs Have?

In recent years, 4K TVs have become mainstream in the TV market, with most televisions being 43-inches and larger being 4K compatible, and 50 to 55-inch products being particularly popular4K refers to a screen resolution of 3840 horizontal × 2160 vertical pixels, four times that of conventional full high definition TVs.

Because of its refined image quality, there's less noticeable pixelation when viewed from up close. This allowed manufacturers to safely encourage a shorter viewing distance, making it possible to place a 50-inch or larger model in a living room of any size. Recent TVs also feature narrower TV edges, called bezels, allowing for larger screen space.

Lastly, more and more TVs are offering connectivity to the Internet so people can enjoy videos on demand and access streaming services. 4K movies only used to be available via select digital broadcasts or movie theaters, but nowadays, they can also be streamed on your TV, allowing you to enjoy high definition, 4K movies from the comfort of your own home.

How to Choose Japanese TVs

Here are nine points to consider when buying a Japanese TV.

1

Choose LCD's For The Best Value, and OLED's For Best Resolution

There are two types of 4K TVs, LCD and OLED. Make sure to look at the pros and cons of each type when choosing which TV to buy.

LCD's Offer the Biggest Price and Size Ranges

LCD's Offer the Biggest Price and Size Ranges

LCD TVs use a backlight behind the screen to control the liquid crystal molecules when projecting images on the screen.

The advantage is a wide range of price and size options, but they generally are affordable, making them best for families with small children or pets who do not want the risk of buying an expensive TV only to have it end up destroyed.

On the other hand, the disadvantage is that their resolution is inferior to OLED. It's essential to understand that the light from the backlight leaks out, so perfect blacks cannot be displayed as precisely. As a result, colors can change when viewed from an angle and picture quality may diminish with scenes depicting heavy motion.

Nevertheless, in recent years, the resolution has improved considerably compared to earlier previous generations. For those who are not so particular about picture quality, LCD TVs are a great choice.

OLEDs Deliver the Purest Black Tones and Smooth On-Screen Motion and Are Great for Sports and Movies

OLEDs Deliver the Purest Black Tones and Smooth On-Screen Motion and Are Great for Sports and Movies

OLED TVs use naturally emitting OLED elements to project images. Since there is no backlight, the panels tend to be thinner than LCDs.

The most significant advantage of OLED TVs is that they can display clear and beautiful images. It excels in contrast ratio and the expression of blacks and whites, making it particularly attractive for movies with detailed attention to lighting. The fast screen response speed and wide viewing angles also make it suitable for sports and other fast-moving images

On the other hand, one disadvantage is the high price. They cost on average 700$ more than LCD TVs of the same size, and since they are limited to large models (55V-inch or larger), your budget will naturally have to be higher.

Also, it is essential to note that the panels are delicate and easily broken. When moving, you may not be able to use traditional materials to transport TVs, and the number of companies that can handle them may be limited or they may not provide proper insurance. If you plan to move soon, it is advisable to wait for a replacement or keep the TV in the box from the store.

Audio and Visual Journalist

Today's TVs can be divided into low to mid-priced 4K LCD TVs and high-priced OLED TVs. OLEDs are recommended for those seeking the best high-definition picture quality.

2

Color Development and Contrast Will Vary Depending on Manufacturer

Color Development and Contrast Will Vary Depending on Manufacturer

In the case of LCD TVs, color, contrast, and screen brightness vary greatly depending on the manufacturer and product. TVs come with different optimizations, ranging from TVs tuned for brighter colors to those tuned for neutral colors. The key to choosing a suitable TV is how accurately it displays the color gradation of the image.

Our testing showed that products with picture quality processing that achieves a natural coloring and color balance tend to have less image noise and finer detail. Products that process images with yellow, white, red, or some other unbalanced color tended to have poorer image quality performance.

In our ranking of the TVs, identical images are shown as they would appear displayed by each product, so those interested can compare the color tones when selecting the product.

3

Recent TVs Can Record Without External Recorders! Check the Number of Tuners

Recent TVs Can Record Without External Recorders! Check the Number of Tuners

Many people probably watch TV by recording programs instead of watching them in real-time. Today's TVs can also record programs by connecting an external USB HDD. The number of tuners is significant to consider here.

The number of tuners determines the number of broadcasts that can be recorded at once. A model with two tuners can record one broadcast besides the one you are currently watching. Similarly, a model with three tuners can record two broadcasts at the same time while you watch another program.

If you have an external recorder for TV recording, you can have two sources for recording. If you don't have an external recorder and want to use only the TV for recording, you should choose a TV with multiple tuners.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

4K TVs may have different numbers of tuners for 4K broadcasting, depending on the product. If you want to record 4K broadcasts on your TV, check the number of available tuners.

4

The Optimal Viewing Distance for 4K TVs Are 1.5 Times the Height of the Screen

The Optimal Viewing Distance for 4K TVs Are 1.5 Times the Height of the Screen

When purchasing a TV, size selection is critical. There is an appropriate distance for television viewing that allows you to easily see the picture. A good rule of thumb for selecting the size is to refer to the size of the room in which you want to install the TV.

Ideally, the distance should be three times the screen height for a 2K TV and 1.5 times the height of the screen for a 4K TV. For example, for a 55-inch 4K TV with a screen height of 48 inches, a distance of 48 inches by 1.5 inches would equal 72 inches, or about 6 feet, which would be a reasonable viewing distance.

Make sure to do these calculations before selecting a TV to purchase so you know which size model would fit best in your viewing space.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

Optimum viewing distance means the shortest distance high-quality images can be enjoyed at. 4K TVs have a smaller optimal viewing distance than 2K TVs, but of course, they can still be viewed from a greater distance.

5

The Number of Watts Determines Acoustic Performance

The Number of Watts Determines Acoustic Performance

If you are going out of your way to buy a high-resolution TV, you should also make sure to check the quality of the speakers' performance. To get an idea of the sound performance, use the overall output of the speakers installed as a guide.

Speaker output is indicated in watts; the higher the number, the louder the sound output. Most 4K TVs use about 20 to 30 watts, but some high-output models use 80 watts or more, so check them out, too.

Another important factor in determining the sound quality is whether the sound can be heard from all directions as if it were enveloping your ears and whether it is harmonious with the image. Models with excellent sound quality tended to be praised for their power and atmospheric sound, with sound enveloping from both vertical and horizontal directions.

Furthermore, models that support Dolby Atmos, the most advanced audio processor often used at movie theaters, are said to emit atmospheric sound. This makes your viewing experience more immersive, as the sound of a helicopter from your screen can sound so real it feels like it's right above you, or the sound of pouring rain can sound like it's coming from right outside your window.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

There are a variety of sound standards required for TVs, but for low-priced models, it is advisable to focus on whether you can clearly hear the dialogue. For higher-end models, the key is to be able to enjoy movies and music with immersive sound.

6

Choose Based on Display Type and Performance

There are two types of LCD TV displays: direct-lit LCDs and edge-lit LCDs, which differ in the placement of the LEDs that serve as the backlight. Each panel type has unique characteristics, so it's crucial to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each before making a choice.

Choose Direct Back-Lit LED Screens for High Picture Quality

Choose Direct Back-Lit LED Screens for High Picture Quality

LCD TVs are made from glass filled with a special liquid, lit by LEDs that serve as the backlight.

In direct-lit LCDs, these LEDs are arranged over the entire surface. The advantage is that uneven brightness is less likely to occur on the screen, allowing users to enjoy higher-quality images. In addition, because the backlight is located over the entire screen, brightness can be adjusted for each part of the screen, enabling high-contrast, clear video expression.

However, the placement of the backlight across the entire back of the unit adds significantly to the width of the unit. This makes these designs a bit more clunky which can be a disadvantage for some.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

The backlight is an important element that determines the screen's brightness and contrast. Among direct-lit backlights, models that support local optimization produce the highest picture quality.

Unfortunately, many direct-lit models do not have local optimization these days. Over the past few years, cost reductions in direct-lit models have meant that an increasing number of them are made at lower production costs. Therefore, it is necessary to keep in mind that some models do not have local optimization even in the direct-lit type.

Choose Edge Lit Displays for a Smaller and Thinner Display

Choose Edge Lit Displays for a Smaller and Thinner Display

Edge-lit displays have LEDs placed only along the vertical or horizontal edges to back-light the screen. The advantage of an edge-lit LCD is that the light source is located at the edge of the TV, allowing the unit to be made thinner. Since there are fewer total backlights, power consumption is also low. Many products are also reasonably priced, making them suitable for people who want to switch to 4K at the lowest possible cost.

On the other hand, the drawback is that the images and colors are somewhat uneven. It's also difficult to control partial brightness, as is the case with direct-lit models, so the overall color contrast of the image is somewhat low.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

Edge-lit LEDs are used in much cheaper 4K TVs. Check for problems with uneven screen color and brightness balance before purchasing.

For LCDs, the Type of Panel Choice Depends on Your Viewing Location

For LCDs, the Type of Panel Choice Depends on Your Viewing Location

In addition to differences in display backlighting, LCD TV panels also have differing characteristics. There are two types of LCD TV panels: VA (vertical alignment) and IPS (in-plane switching). The panels are responsible for adjusting the light from the backlight to reproduce light and dark expressions and colors.

The VA panel is attractive for its rich contrast. However, the viewing angle is narrow, so contrast and color saturation are reduced when viewed from any angle other than the front. The IPS panel expands the viewing angle, which has been a weak point for traditional LCDs. Because the brightness and color contrast aren't impacted when viewing from any angle, you can have watch parties with a large number of friends. However, the contrast ratio is not as good as VA panels.

If you usually watch TV from the front, choose the VA type. If you have your TV in the corners of rooms and view it from an angle, select the IPS type.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

If viewing angles are an essential factor for you, choosing a model with IPS panels will give you more flexibility. However, some VA panel products have new technologies that expand viewing angles. Be sure to check the product description.

High-Quality Resolution Processing and Double Refresh Rate Features Make For More Convenient Viewing

Many TVs come equipped with additional functions such as 4K upscaling, which brings non-4K images up to 4K quality. Double refresh rate is another feature that gives you twice the regular amount of frames per second at 120/second instead of the regular 60. Streaming service compatibility is another that allows users to enjoy YouTube and Netflix on their TVs.

These functions are necessary for high-quality image processing and are convenient to have, so please check them out when purchasing.

Convert Non-4K Pictures to 4K With 4K Upscaling

Convert Non-4K Pictures to 4K With 4K Upscaling

Often the first thing you watch after setting up your new TV is cable or a youtube video. 4K-compatible TVs are equipped with a 4K upscaling function that converts images that are not originally 4K into 4K-equivalent picture quality. When viewing cable TV, Internet videos, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs, 4K televisions offer a more beautiful viewing experience than conventional televisions.

Note that the performance of the 4K upscaling function varies depending on the product and manufacturer. How effective the 4K upscaling is an important factor when selecting a TV.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

The 4K upscaling function is built into the high-resolution engine and high-resolution circuitry developed independently by TV manufacturers.

Advanced manufacturers use ultra-high-resolution technologies to achieve image quality close to that of 4K broadcasts, even for regular TV broadcasting.

With Double Refresh Rate, Every Action Scene Is Beautiful and Smooth

With Double Refresh Rate, Every Action Scene Is Beautiful and Smooth

The double refresh rate is essential for viewing high-action scenes more beautifully. It is called the double refresh rate function because it doubles the number of frames per second from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second. Since the double refresh rate inserts a new image between each frame, it can then withstand blurring caused by rapid movements better and produce crisper visuals.

It's suitable for watching live sports broadcasts with a lot of fast movements and is expected to reduce afterimage and flicker. Those who seek high image quality that captures the details of fast-moving images should definitely check out this product.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

A double-speed panel is essential for the double frame refresh rate functionality; it is also a standard among 4K LCD TVs for the use of high-performance LCD panels.

Streaming Services and Voice Control Make For User-Friendly TVs

Streaming Services and Voice Control Make For User-Friendly TVs

Many of the TVs sold today are compatible with streaming services that offer a wide variety of content, including movies, dramas, and anime. Additionally, there are also free content services such as YouTube, both of which offer access to 4K videos.

However, which specific streaming services are supported depends on the TV manufacturer, so the content available to you can vary. Some manufacturers can even process video streaming images in high definition, so it is a good idea to check.

Also, check if the model has voice-enabled control. If it has a voice operation function, it will save you from troublesome operations when searching for a video streaming service. Since typing with remote controls can feel more troublesome compared to typing on a smartphone or PC, it will help you use the service comfortably and stress-free.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist

Since 2021, most major TV manufacturers' models support major platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. If you choose a manufacturer other than the major ones, make sure it supports the video streaming services you want to use.

Models With HDR Provide More Realistic Pictures

Models With HDR Provide More Realistic Pictures

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, video technology that reproduces the brightness and darkness of the screen to mimic human vision. 4K broadcasting uses HDR technology, and HDR is also increasingly used in the latest movies and video games.

Compared to the conventional SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), HDR technology can produce richer color expression and even subtle color changes displayed in greater detail. To improve the beauty of 4K TVs, which are known for their visual appeal, it's important to check the pros and cons of HDR compatibility.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist

Since 2021, most TVs are HDR compatible. However, be careful because there are still some models that are not HDR-compatible.

A 4K Tuner is Necessary for 4K Viewing; Choose a Model With a Built-in Tuner

A 4K Tuner is Necessary for 4K Viewing; Choose a Model With a Built-in Tuner

If you are purchasing a 4K-compatible TV, be sure to check if it has a built-in 4K tuner. Many 4K-compatible TVs are sold without a built-in 4K tuner. If there is no built-in tuner, you will need to purchase a separate external 4K tuner to view 4K images in 4K quality. Thus, it's vital to know that you will not be able to enjoy 4K images just by purchasing the TV itself.

If you want to watch a 4K video with only your TV, or if you don't have room for a tuner, be sure to choose a model with a built-in tuner.

Kazuya Orihara
Audio and Visual Journalist
Kazuya Orihara

Most cable broadcasts can be delivered with 4K imaging as long as you have a built-in 4K tuner. Since TVs are, on average, can used for nearly ten years after purchase, we recommend that you choose a model with a built-in 4K tuner even if you do not plan to use the TV immediately.

The VIERA TH-55JZ1000 comes equipped with Panasonic's originally designed and produced OLED display. Utilizing the Dot Contrast Panel Controller, local dimming technology that individually controls brightness and color information on a pixel-by-pixel basis, this TV carefully controls color gradation with precision.

The resolution was excellent in regards to depth perception and clarity. When watching a TV drama with darker moody scenes, its ability to display color contrast between darker shades was exceptional. However, for sports and news programs with a noticeable amount of image noise, it didn't perform as great.

The sound quality we rated highly for its ability to reproduce the finer details and an immersive audio experience. It was also good at producing dialogue realistically and excellent at emitting bass sounds as well.

In addition to Alexa and Google Assistant, this TV comes equipped with Panasonic's unique Viera voice recognition feature. The OS is a Sony original, and it also has streaming service compatibility and a recording function. Its attention to detail shines in various aspects such as image and sound quality and overall functionality.

High-Definition TV With Vibrant Color Displays and Impressive Bass Audio

Sharp, a company that released the world's first 8K TV, has released their new OLED TV, the AQUOS 4T-C55DQ1 equipped with a newly developed 4K image processing engine based on 8K image technology principles. By precisely controlling the amount of light emitted by each pixel, it can produce both glittering light and jet-black darkness.

The picture quality is excellent, delivering vivid resolution, pure blacks, and an overall rich color balance. We also found the images to be cinematic, with minimal image noise. However, we found that some high-motion content wasn't as great, and the accuracy of the double refresh rate function did not meet our expectations.

We evaluated the audio quality highly for its rich and deep sound and low-pitched bass sounds. The dialogue was balanced well with any background sounds, making it easy to hear clearly. Overall, the sound quality received high marks for being sharp, precisely due to the range of low-pitched bass sounds.

In terms of streaming services, we highly rated the versatility of this Android TV with its option to add apps and customize the home screens just like smartphones and tablets. Overall, with both voice command and automated recording function, this TV is a high-functioning, easy-to-use product.

Clear TV With Strong Audio and Controlled Light Distribution

LG, a company that produces OLED panels for manufacturers worldwide, has developed the OLED TV OLED55B1PJA. It features a wide range of types from 4K to 8K and sizes from 43 inches to 88 inches. This product comes equipped with AI technology that optimizes image quality and sound quality.

We evaluated the picture quality highly for producing detail-rich, cinematic images. In addition to the wide range of natural color expression, the depth perception of the images was excellent. Even with online videos, there was little to no blurring, and even if there was movement, there was no afterimage. However, depending on the viewing angle and lighting condition, parts of the screen displayed some roughness.

We also evaluated sound quality highly because we could distinctly hear dialogue balanced against other background sounds. However, the voice reproduction was a bit unclear when playing on YouTube. Nonetheless, the deep bass sounds and the immersive quality of the audio overall were excellent.

LG's OLED TVs, making up the world's third-largest TV share, are fitted with streaming services and voice control, and can also record when connected to an external HDD. Google Assistant, Alexa, and LG's voice search features make it easy to use as well. We also appreciated how you can operate the remote control with a pointer as if it were a mouse.

TV With Rich Contrast, Pristine Images, and Immersive Audio

Toshiba's 4K TV REGZA 55Z740XS comes equipped with a fully automatic recording function time-shift machine that allows you to re-watch all of your favorite shows from the past. This TV also has various original image processing technologies, such as a program that detects human skin in real-time and edits it to appear healthier with a more natural-looking skin tone.

We evaluated the picture quality highly for its rich visual contrast and high resolution. Even in high-motion videos, the double refresh rate function was effective at producing blur-free scenes. Unfortunately, when watching a darkly shaded video, the image quality processing resulted in too many whites without showing enough blacks for consistent gradation.

The audio quality received favorable reviews for producing detailed sounds with clarity. Even for regular cable, the audio quality was improved and created an immersive viewing experience. Unfortunately, one negative point was that when listening to music on YouTube, the singer's voice was sometimes choppy. Nonetheless, the sound still had plenty of power with deep bass notes, and the overall sound quality was above average.

Equipped with both fully automated recording and streaming services and voice controls, you can rewatch the shows that you missed. With many useful features, it received a favorable score in terms of functionality.

TV With Natural Textures and Best Bang-For-Your-Buck Audio Quality

Sony also developed the BRAVIA KJ-55X80J 4K TV, which delivers high-definition colorful 4K picture quality. It can render detailed color shades and the nuanced texture of human skin with precision and vivid colors

We evaluated the picture quality highly for its ability to balance bright and dark shades. It performed well by delivering vibrant colors, producing a cinematic image, and displaying the delicate textures of human skin. However, we did find a little bit of image noise visible when watching cable and afterimage when viewing high-motion media. Further, the performance weakened depending on the viewing angle.

The sound quality was rated highly for its detail, with easily audible voices and the finer nuances of vocal tones conveyed. The sound produced an immersive experience, emphasizing clarity and powerful bass sounds. The audio quality is excellent relative to the price of the product.

The easy-to-use, single-touch activation remote control has eight services, including Netflix and YouTube. In addition, the Google Assistant voice control function allows users to search videos as if they were having a conversation with their TV. However, unfortunately, we had to lower our score here because there was no fast-forwarding feature.

Bright TV That Automatically Optimizes the Image According to Scenes

Panasonic, a comprehensive consumer electronics manufacturer that produces a wide range of products, from televisions, cameras, and other audio-visual equipment to beauty, lifestyle, and kitchen appliances, has developed the VIERA TH-49JX850 4K TV. This TV comes equipped with Auto AI Image Quality technology that automatically optimizes the image according to the scene.

We evaluated the picture quality highly for its emphasis on brightness and excellent handling of after-image reduction for motion-heavy scenes. The high-resolution processing performed exceptionally for streaming services. However, there was some image noise which was distracting. When viewed from certain angles, the image became whitish, and the tonal gradations were unpleasant, resulting in a lower total score for picture quality.

We evaluated the audio quality highly for its ability to produce natural sounds with a balanced and powerful depth of tone. However, one negative was that the bass sound had some unpleasant reverberations when listening to music.

As for features, the remote control includes a voice-operated function that allows users to search for programs, videos, and weather forecasts. Additionally, there is support for video streaming services such as YouTube and Amazon Prime Video. The search engine operates with keywords that enable automatic program recording, which can also be remotely activated with your smartphone.

TV With Great Light Distribution and Immersive Visuals

The 55X8F OLED TV is from Hisense, a China-based electronics manufacturer that owns Toshiba's TV division as a subsidiary. This TV is said to have unique image processing technology that creates a 3D-like immersive effect, making your TV watching experience more dramatic and exciting!

The picture quality was impressive, being brightness-oriented despite being an OLED. However, the resolution for digital broadcasting was not as good, and while it delivered a textured image, some image noise occurred. Internet videos also had a noticeable blurriness, and when accompanied by intense movement, the quality deteriorated with signs of afterimages.

We evaluated the audio quality poorly because the overall sound level was low. The audio often sounded artificial, as if digital processing was applied to the voice bandwidth. We also found that when listening to music on Youtube, the sound was a bit flat.

In terms of features, this TV comes equipped with VIDAA U5 Launcher View, giving you access to video streaming services straight from the launch screen like smartphone applications. However, we found it unfortunate that you cannot customize and add additional applications. Further, there is no support for voice control. Nonetheless, the recording function works well, and the product received an overall favorable evaluation.

TV With Superior High-Resolution Processing Technology Compared to Previous Models From Same Brand

The FE-48US740 4K OLED TV from FUNAI, a company that sells many TVs with HDD for recording and boasts the top market share among Japanese manufacturers in North America, comes equipped with a new high-definition resolution processing engine, the CLEARPIX 2 EVO. This engine allows the TV to display beautiful 4K pictures with perfect color gradation by balancing the amount of color correction to the screen's brightness.

We evaluated the picture quality highly for its cinematic image and image noise processing. Although there are many points where it falls short compared to higher-end TVs, the image quality processing technology has improved dramatically compared to the company's previous OLED TVs. We were impressed with the wider viewing angle and the excellent resolution that this product offered.

The sound quality was very natural, with excellent definition and nuanced expression of tones of voices. The sound had good breadth and depth. However, the high-frequency range was not very clean, and lower bass sounds weren't captured well, resulting in an overall lower score.

This model offers many features, including an automated recording function that records programs based on your preferences and a feature that allows you to jump from the program listings directly into viewing past broadcasts. The high specs for recording, streaming services, and voice-enabled search were highly rated.
