10 Best Tried and True Japanese Peeling Gels in 2022 (Cosmetics Consultant-Reviewed)

Are you concerned about rough skin, or that your skin isn't getting enough moisture? Japanese peeling gels, otherwise known as exfoliating gels or gommages gently exfoliate dead skin and can help reduce dryness, remove grime from pores, and can brighten up the skin. However, there are a ton of brands, like Rosette, FANCL, and PLuS, all being sold at varying price points. On top of that, there are a lot of exfoliating gels with acronyms like BHA, AHA, PHA, and other difficult ingredients that it almost feels like you need a degree in chemistry to even begin to understand what to look for.

To find out which was the best Japanese exfoliators, we gathered 10 of the best-selling products on e-commerce sites popular in Japan, such as Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping, and @cosme Shopping and put all of the products to the test to find out which was the best Japanese peeling gel.

What is a Japanese Exfoliator?

What is a Japanese Exfoliator?

Japanese exfoliators, sometimes referred to as Japanese peeling gels or gomagges (that's French for "scrub" or "exfoliate"), are products that utilize chemical or physical exfoliants to remove dead skin cells, and don't literally peel the skin.

Our skin stays healthy to a convenient function called turnover, where dead skin cells are shed and replaced by new skin cells in a process called desquamation. While this can take anywhere from 1 to 2 months for your skin to complete its turnover cycle, irregular lifestyles or stress can disrupt this turnover cycle.

Old skin cells that haven't been properly shed can lead to dry skin, roughness, blackheads, as well as acne, so it's important to use an exfoliator and help the turnover process.

Japanese peeling gels work by massaging the gel onto your skin. As you do this, the gel changes texture, turning into little lumpy balls. Those balls gently exfoliate your skin, picking up dead skin cells and excess sebum along the way.

Some peeling gels out on the market actually don't have any exfoliants in them, so all you get is lumpy residue.

While these little lumps can remove some dead skin cells, they're no match for products that actually contain proper exfoliants.

How to Choose a Japanese Peeling Gel

In this section, we'll break down the four major points to consider when looking for an effective Japanese exfoliating gel.

① Look for Exfoliating Ingredients like BHA, AHA, and PHA

① Look for Exfoliating Ingredients like BHA, AHA, and PHA

Broadly speaking, there are three types of exfoliants: BHAs, AHAs, and PHAs.

BHAs, like salicylic acid, are easily dissolved in oil, and is best for those who want to care of dead skin cells that are clogged in the pores.

AHAs like glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid, to name a few, as well as PHAs like gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, are easily dissolved in water, and are best for removing grime and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.

Always check the ingredients list to see if the exfoliating gel has the exfoliating ingredients best suited for your concerns.

While exfoliation strength goes from BHA>AHA>PHA, since this ultimately depends on the quantity of exfoliants the exfoliating gel is formulated with, it's hard to say without taking that into consideration.

Ultimately, you'll have to determine which product suits your skin the best as you use them.

② Moisturizing Ingredients Prevent Dry Skin and Lessen Irritation Caused by Exfoliating Ingredients

② Moisturizing Ingredients Prevent Dry Skin and Lessen Irritation Caused by Exfoliating Ingredients

Next, consider what moisturizing ingredients the exfoliating gel is formulated with.

Since exfoliating gels are rinsed off, it might seem pointless for them to contain moisturizing ingredients, but they're an important ingredient, since they minimize dryness after you rinse it off as well as irritation caused by the exfoliating ingredients.

Look for a product that lists glycerin, DPG, honey, or plant extracts for the most moisturizing Japanese exfoliating gels.

Note that if a products formulated with a large amount of plant extracts can irritate sensitive skin, so know that more isn't necessarily better.

Exfoliating gels, similar to face washes and makeup removers, can not only remove grime and dead skin cells, but also dry your skin out. By applying moisturizing ingredients to the skin that's been deprived of moisture after washing can help reduce irritation and dryness.

Of course, don't forget to moisturize after using an exfoliating gel.

③ Thicker Textures are Easier to Handle and are More Gentle

③ Thicker Textures are Easier to Handle and are More Gentle

How an exfoliating gel feels is also incredibly important.

Watery exfoliating gels tend to drip off when you put it on your face. Gels that are thick in texture won't immediately drip off and are much easier to handle.

Moreover, watery exfoliating gels not only tend to drip off, but also provide less of a barrier on your skin, feeling almost like you're directly rubbing your skin. Thicker gels feel softer on the skin and can reduce friction.

④ Products You Can Use With Wet Hands are Versatile

④ Products You Can Use With Wet Hands are Versatile

There are some exfoliating gels that can be used even when your hands are wet.

If you want to exfoliate your entire body or want to exfoliate in the bath, we recommend products that you can use with wet hands, since you won't have to wipe your hands beforehand.

How We Tested the Peeling Gels

How We Tested the Peeling Gels

We gathered 10 of the most popular Japanese exfoliators available on e-commerce sites in Japan, such as Amazon, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping, and @cosme shopping and tested them all to find the best Japanese exfoliating gel.

We tested each exfoliating gel for the following:

  1. Exfoliating ability
  2. Ingredients
  3. Feel

Test ①: Exfoliating Ability

Test ①: Exfoliating Ability

First, we used a tape-style corneum checker to test how exfoliating each peeling gel was.

We first gathered skin cells from skin before using the exfoliating gel. We then had our Japanese testers use each product at the recommended frequency for a week and compared the results

Products that were able to remove enough dead skin were given a score ranging from 3 to 5, while products that struggled to remove enough were given a score ranging from 1 to 2.

Even if products list exfoliating ingredients in their ingredients chart, it may be the case that they're only formulated with such a small amount that they actually don't have any effect on the skin. The purpose of this test was to find out if the exfoliating gels actually remove dead skin.

Test ②: Ingredients

Test ②: Ingredients

Next, we asked our expert, cosmetics consultant Emiko Akahoshi, check each product for their ingredients.

We asked her to check the ingredients based on the following:

  • Whether or not the products feature effective exfoliating ingredients
  • Whether or not the ingredients are gentle on the skin

When examining the ingredients, we asked Emiko to place a 70% emphasis on the exfoliating ingredients and a 30% emphasis on how gentle they are.

Some products that we tested are classified as quasi-drugs, which is a unique Japanese classification of products that sits in between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Manufacturers are not obligated by law to label all their ingredients for quasi-drugs, so Emiko only evaluated those products based on what was written on the label.

Test ③: Feel

Test ③: Feel

The feel of an exfoliating gel is another important aspect to consider. If you're going to exfoliate your skin, you'll want something that makes your skin feel smooth without drying it out.

For this test, we gathered two Japanese testers per product and had them rate each product based on the following aspects:

  • How smooth it made their skin feel
  • How nice it felt to use
  • How convenient the container was

Products that had a good feel were given a score ranging from 3 to 5, while products that were difficult or unpleasant to use were given a score ranging from 1 to 2.

How to Use a Japanese Peeling Gel

How to Use a Japanese Peeling Gel

Most Japanese exfoliating gels work like this: after washing your face, apply the exfoliating gel on your skin and massage it in for about 10 to 30 seconds. Once you see little squishy and clumpy balls form and fall off, you rinse it off with cold or warm water.

There are some products that can exfoliate the skin without any friction. All you need to do is apply it to the skin and wait, similar to a face mask. Make sure to read the instructions or look for reviews online before you buy a new exfoliating gel.

There are also three things to keep in mind when using a Japanese exfoliating gel:

  1. Use plenty of gel to prevent excess friction
  2. If you plan on going outside after using an exfoliating gel, make sure to use UV protection
  3. Try not to use cosmetics that can irritate the skin

If the product doesn't list how frequent it should be use, it's best to just use it only once a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Japanese peeling gels be used on sensitive skin?

Those with extremely sensitive skin should not use exfoliating gels. By nature, exfoliating gels can be more irritating on the skin in comparison to regular skincare products, and are best for those with normal or tough skin.

If your skin occasionally gets irritated by your skincare products, it's best to reduce your frequency of skin exfoliation and monitor the condition of your skin.

Regardless of your skin type, whenever using a new product, it's best to conduct a patch test on the inside of your arm, such as near your bicep.

Are Japanese peeling gels effective on minimizing acne or acne scars?

Exfoliating gels can irritate the skin, and should not be used on acne. While there are some who use Japanese exfoliating gels to remove acne or minimize the appearance of acne scars, this can actually worsen your condition.

Moreover, cosmetic products aren't formulated with effective ingredients that can treat acne scars. Quasi-drugs that are formulated with brightening ingredients can only help prevent blemishes, so they're best for suppressing melanin production.

Though everyone thinks that temporary hair dye doesn’t work well on dark hair, this isn't entirely true. While temporary hair dyes don’t show up as vividly as they do for naturally lighter colored hair, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find yourself a rocking new (subdued) color. Our favorite temporary hair dye was Arctic Fox's Semi-Permanent Hair Color Dye.
