How to Choose a Car Vacuum for Pet Hair - Buying Guide

In order to choose a strong and durable car vacuum that can easily pick up pet hair, there are many things you need to take into consideration, including its suction power, the type of vacuum, and the accessories that come with it. Continue reading our buying guide to learn what makes a great car vacuum for pet hair!

1

Decide Between a Corded or Cordless Model

Car vacuums can be categorized into two types: corded and cordless. This section discusses each type's strong and weak points, so you can easily choose the right type for you.

For the Ultimate Convenience, Go For a Cordless Unit

For the Ultimate Convenience, Go For a Cordless Unit

A cordless vacuum is battery-powered and is easy to use anywhere. However, the suction power tends to decrease as the battery life decreases. Most cordless vacuums can run for about 15 to 30 minutes per charge.

For convenient charging, choose a cordless vacuum that can be charged via a USB cable in your car. Some vacuums also come with a docking station that charges your vacuum and allows for storage after use.

We also suggest picking a cordless vacuum with a charging light indicator. This feature alerts you when the battery is running low and shows when it's done charging.

A good vacuum will save you time and effort. A cordless unit is nearly effortless, as you aren't relying on plug-in power. You can grab your vacuum and sweep anywhere at any time. Cordless is convenient, but is it the right choice for your needs?

Corded Vacuums Offer More Suction Power

Corded Vacuums Offer More Suction Power

With a corded vacuum, you won't have to worry about battery life or running out of power in the middle of cleaning. They tend to offer more suction power and work well for long and tough vacuuming jobs like sucking up fine pet hair from the car's carpet.

However, the major con of corded vacuums is obviously that they need to be plugged into a power outlet all the time. If the cord is too short, you might have to use a bulky extension cord. So, go for a cord length of at least 15 feet to reach all the corners of your car.

Some corded vacuums also come with an extension hose to give you extended reach. Some models can be plugged into your car's 12-volt socket, allowing you to clean your car even when you have no access to a power outlet.

Chances are you'll find a corded vacuum in every home in the U.S. A good vacuum is reliable and powerful. Depending on the style you prefer, corded units can offer plug-and-go convenience with substantial power and suction capabilities.

When we were comparing corded vs. cordless, we found corded models provided better cleaning, longer lifespans, and more optional features, all at a better price point. Pet hair gets everywhere, but with the right corded vacuum, it won't stick around long.

2

Know Features That Help Suck up Pet Hair Effectively

There are certain features that make a car vacuum helpful for picking up pet hair. Read on to find out what they are!

Look For a Motorized Brush to Remove Embedded Pet Hair

Look For a Motorized Brush to Remove Embedded Pet Hair

Car vacuums that are designed specifically for pet hair usually come with a motorized brush tool that helps extract embedded fur from different surfaces. You can also look for a vacuum with a brush tool that has rubber bristles. Rubber has strong electrostatic properties and can draw pet hair out of upholstery, carpets, and seats.

If the pet hair is stuck in the crevices of your car, look for a vacuum with a crevice tool. It usually has a thin shape with an angled tip and can easily get into hard-to-reach places like the vents in your car or seat pockets to remove all the hair.

Make Sure Your Vacuum Has Strong Suction Power

Make Sure Your Vacuum Has Strong Suction Power

Pet hair can cling strongly to your car's upholstery and carpets, so getting rid of it is not an easy task. Therefore, it's important that your vacuum has a strong suction power to remove all the embedded pet hair.

To judge the suction power of a vacuum cleaner, take a look at its air wattage. This is a unit of measurement that calculates the amount of airflow and power a vacuum generates and uses. As a rule of thumb, the higher the air wattage, the more powerful the suction is.

Some manufacturers don't list their products' air wattage, and instead cite suction pressure to show the effectiveness of a vacuum cleaner. The unit of suction pressure is pascals (Pa). Vacuums with high suction pressure can easily suck up debris, dirt, and pet hair.

To effectively get rid of pet hair, you'll want the best suction possible. Unfortunately, checking the air wattage and suction pressure is just a start. There are many other factors that affect suction, so the numbers you see on a product may not reflect real performance.

The air volume flow, measured in CFM or cubic feet per minute, the power in watts, and the RPMs of the motor also play a part. Adding attachments like hoses immediately lowers the suction power. HEPA and other powerful filters will decrease it further, not to mention clogged filters.

Thus, while looking at all those numbers is important, remember they're not a completely accurate representation of a vacuum's effectiveness, and keep all these factors in mind.

Pet hair can be tricky because it finds its way into the fabric and crevices in your car. A vacuum with higher wattage equals better suction. Look for a model that has over 1000 watts.

Go For a Lightweight Vacuum for Ease of Use

Go For a Lightweight Vacuum for Ease of Use

It can be difficult to use a large vacuum inside a car since there are many hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. So instead of a large vacuum, we suggest choosing a model that's light and compact

Many handheld vacuums are cordless, and usually have a more lightweight design than corded ones. They can weigh from two to four pounds and are easy to handle. Corded vacuums tend to weigh more, but there are models that weigh only three to seven pounds and won't make vacuuming your car a tiresome task.

Weighing in at sometimes just a few pounds, some of the lightest vacuums make clean-up a breeze. Lightweights also lend themselves to being highly portable.

3

Take Note of the Dust Cup Capacity

Take Note of the Dust Cup Capacity

Another important factor to pay attention to is the capacity of the dust cup. Cordless vacuums can hold as little as a few ounces of debris, while corded shop vacs can store a few gallons!

A vacuum with a large dust cup will allow for longer cleaning because you won't have to stop in the middle to empty it. Although a capacity of about 10 to 30 ounces is usually sufficient to clean a car, we suggest going for one with more if you have a larger vehicle or a lot of mess.

Many vacuums feature a dust-emptying button that allows you to clean the dust cup without having to detach it from the body. Also, consider a dust cup that's transparent to see when the cup is full and needs to be emptied.

4

Keep Your Air Clean With HEPA Filters

Keep Your Air Clean With HEPA Filters

If your family or friends are allergic to pet dander, consider a car vacuum that uses a High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter. HEPA filters can capture approximately 99.97 percent of airborne allergens, including pet dander, to keep the air you breathe fresh and clean.

Some car vacuums also feature a multi-stage filtration system that traps dust and debris. This feature is very useful to ensure that nothing leaves the dust cup and reenters the air.

You're in close contact with sweeper air output when vacuuming. To help keep you breathing easier and for improved air quality in your car, look for a HEPA filter. These days, many manufacturers are making HEPA filters standard.
