How to Choose a Wetsuit Bag - Buying Guide

Before buying a wetsuit bag, there are a few points you should take into consideration, such as style and water resistance. To help you with this, we’ve put together this handy buying guide!

1

Decide What You Want the Bag to Do

Any bag can carry a wetsuit, but the reason why there are specific bags just for wetsuits is that they can perform tasks other than simply carrying your wetsuit.

Wet and Dry Bags Are Fully Waterproof

Wet and Dry Bags Are Fully Waterproof

You will see these bags labeled as either wet bags, dry bags, or even wet dry bags, but they are all the same. They are fully waterproof and will not allow any water to get in or out of the bag.

They’re usually made of heavy tarpaulin and are constructed in a way (such as being glued or welded) to ensure no water can get through any seams. They normally have a single opening at the top that's also designed to be fully waterproof.

When sealing these bags, make sure you follow the instructions. The opening is the only way water can get in, and if it isn't sealed correctly the bag won't remain waterproof. Typically, you have to roll the top over three to four times and then seal it with clips.

If you put your belongings in one of these bags while you’re out in the water, then they will remain dry even if the bag falls in. When you’re back on dry land, you can put your wetsuit and other wet items inside, and no water will escape.

Due to the focus on being waterproof, they don’t have many pockets to use and can be heavy because of the materials. This type of bag can't really be used for other purposes!

Some Bags Will Help Your Wetsuit Dry

Some Bags Will Help Your Wetsuit Dry

Another type of bag that is popular helps wetsuits dry. These are often made from mesh so that air can easily flow through the holes and dry your wetsuit quicker. Your wetsuit may not get completely dry in one of these bags, but it will speed up the process.

As these bags aren’t waterproof, they won’t protect any belongings if the bag falls into the water. They do have more pockets, though, and are also useful for gym kits or other sports equipment.

Other Bags Are Water-Resistant

Other Bags Are Water-Resistant

You may also see these bags called surfpacks. If you’re not looking to take your belongings out on the water with you and just want a bag that’s going to hold your wetsuit, then bags made of nylon are a good compromise.

They’re not entirely waterproof, so you may find a few drops of water escape through seams or zippers, and they may not cope as well with wetsuits that are still dripping. However, they have more pockets and can be used for other purposes

2

Consider a Bag With a Changing Mat

Consider a Bag With a Changing Mat

Wetsuits can get damaged by various things, such as dirt and rocks. This makes changing out of them potentially dangerous, as they can drag on the floor as you pull your legs out. Some bags have a changing mat as part of their construction to prevent this from happening.

They usually have duffle style; when fully open, they flatten into a circular mat that you can stand on while you take off your wetsuit. Then you simply pull the strings, and the bag will gather around the wetsuit. The wetsuit will be fully protected from the ground, and you won’t even need to pick it up to put it in your bag!

Due to the style of the fastening, it’s rare for this type of bag to be completely waterproof, and they often don’t have a number of pockets to choose from.

Some bags that aren’t designed to have changing mats can sometimes be used as one, regardless. Look for bags that, when empty, will flatten to a large enough surface to comfortably stand on. This won’t be possible with mesh bags, but dry bags or ones made from nylon may fit the bill.

3

Make Sure the Bag is Comfortable to Carry

Make Sure the Bag is Comfortable to Carry

Wet wetsuits can become very heavy. You may have other equipment with you as well, and this will all add to the weight. Although a bag can make them easier to carry, it won’t lighten the weight. So choosing a comfortable wetsuit bag is of vital importance.

If you choose a bag with one strap, look for a wide and padded strap. These will distribute the weight better than a thin strap and prevent the strap from chafing your skin.

However, we recommend backpack-style bags with two straps. This way, the weight is evenly spread across your back instead of resting fully on one shoulder. A backpack will also keep your hands free! Again, make sure that the straps are padded and for extra protection, and look for bags that also have sternum or waist straps.

4

Get a Bag Big Enough For All of Your Gear

Get a Bag Big Enough For All of Your Gear

Think about what you want the bag to carry. Is it just your wetsuit, or will you need a bag for your diving gear, a towel, or even warm winter clothing if you head into colder water? You should also consider the size of your wetsuit itself, as thicker wetsuits for cold water will take up more space than thin ones suited for warmer climates.

The capacity of wetsuit bags can either be measured in inches or liters. You may find that liters are an easier measurement to look at as it only applies to the internal capacity of the bag.

If you’re looking for a bag that can hold a single wetsuit, a few small accessories, and a few snacks, then a bag with a capacity of 23 to 25 liters may be sufficient for your needs. You may find this size suitable for a solo weekend.

For thicker wetsuits and a bulkier accessory, such as a towel, look for bags that are around 30 liters. We would recommend this size to most people if you’re looking for a bag for a solo week-long trip.

Winter wetsuits and multiple accessories may be best served by bags with a capacity above 35 or 40 liters. You can even find bags that go up to 90 liters, but these will be very difficult to carry!

You may find larger bags suitable to transport all of your gear in the back of a vehicle, but smaller bags are often better for carrying the specific gear you need at any one time. This is especially the case if you want a bag that you can take out on the water with you

If you’re kayaking, for example, a 90-liter bag is likely to sink you! A smaller, five-liter bag would be able to fit inside your kayak and is big enough to hold belongings, such as a wallet, phone, and first aid kit.

It can be hard to judge workable capacities from product descriptions, so make sure to check out the reviews. Previous purchasers will often list what they’ve been able to carry in their bags, and this hands-on experience can be invaluable if buying online!
