How to Choose a Canning Funnel - Buying Guide

When choosing a canning funnel, there are many things you need to take into consideration, such as its material and diameter. We've put together this handy buying to help you out, so keep reading for more details!

1

Pick a Funnel Material Based on Performance and Durability

Most canning funnels are made from plastic, silicone, or stainless steel. We'll go into more detail about each material's strong and weak points below so you can choose the right funnel for your needs.

Stainless Steel for Durability

Stainless Steel for Durability

Canning funnels made of stainless steel are very durable and highly corrosion-resistant. They're also heat-resistant and, aside from canning, can be used for transferring freshly cooked foods or hot liquids like frying oil you've just used.

Although they're more expensive than other types of funnels, they don't pick up smells from foods or liquids, and you can safely put them in the dishwasher, too. However, if you wish to wash it by hand, be careful, as the bottom of a stainless steel funnel can be sharper than you'd think, and you could end up cutting your hand.

There are different types of stainless steel, but many high-quality canning funnels are made of 18/8 stainless steel, also known as 304-grade stainless steel. It has 18 percent chromium and eight percent nickel and is very durable.

Silicone for Easy Storage

Silicone for Easy Storage

Silicone canning funnels have a soft, rubber-like texture that's resilient, lightweight and flexible. Most silicone funnels fold down to a compact size for convenient storage. They can withstand high temperatures and can be put in the dishwasher as well.

However, they can pick up odors from your ingredients and stain easily. To deodorize your silicone funnel, you can try soaking it in a mixture of hot water and vinegar.

Plastic Is Lightweight and Easy to Clean

Plastic Is Lightweight and Easy to Clean

Plastic canning funnels are lightweight and affordable, but some cannot withstand high temperatures. While they should be fine with warm or slightly hot mixtures, we advise not using them for boiling hot mixtures to prevent them from melting or deteriorating over time.

Another thing to keep in mind is that plastic funnels stain easily and absorb smells easily, too. However, they're easy to clean and some are dishwasher-safe. They are also durable and not likely to break.

2

Take Into Account the Diameter of the Mouth

Take Into Account the Diameter of the Mouth

Canning funnels come in a wide variety of sizes. When choosing one, make sure it fits perfectly over your jar by checking its bottom diameter. If it's too large, it obviously won't work, but if it's too small, it can move around and be unstable while you're pouring.

The bottom mouth of most canning funnels measures around two to three and a half inches in diameter. A regular-sized Mason jar has a two-and-a-half-inch inner diameter mouth, so a canning funnel with a mouth diameter of two inches would work.

If you're looking for a funnel that's suitable for wide-mouth canning jars, which measure around three and three-eighths inches in diameter, go for a canning funnel with a mouth diameter of about three inches.

You'll want to consider the diameter of the funnel's top, too. Most canning funnels have a wide top of about five inches to make it easy for you to transfer foods and liquids into your jars and containers with minimal spills and splatters.

3

Make Sure Your Canning Funnel Is Easy to Use

Make Sure Your Canning Funnel Is Easy to Use

You don't want your funnel to be shaking or unsteady when using it, so a funnel with grips or handles can be very useful. Some have a hole in their handle for hanging storage. Be careful of the handle material, though; stainless steel handles, for example, can get very hot to the touch when dealing with hot liquids.

If you need to filter out solid ingredients from your liquid, consider a funnel that comes with a strainer. Many canning funnels are also designed with headspace measuring marks on the bottom to help you fill up the jars precisely while leaving enough air.

A funnel might even have an adjustable mouth or design that allows it to fit in a variety of jars. This can make canning easier for you, especially if you know you'll be working with jars of different sizes.

Of course, after everything has been canned, there's the clean-up process. If being able to toss your funnel in the dishwasher is a must for you, make sure the funnel is made from material that is dishwasher-safe.
