Laptop cooling pads can really prevent your laptop from overheating, especially while gaming or using other intensive programs. Before you go shop for one, here are some tips on how to choose the right laptop cooling pad for you.
Laptop cooling pads are often synonymous with laptop stands. However, laptop stands are more focused on ergonomics while laptop cooling pads are focused on improving airflow. Airflow is important for gaming laptops since they tend to overheat more often.
Cooling pads that improve airflow will usually have built-in fans, turbines, or blowers. Each of these will work fine for increasing airflow, but some designs and sizes will be louder than others.
The best laptop cooling pads have a good balance of both ergonomics and improving airflow. Some designs also allow you to combine laptop stands with laptop cooling pads on the same desk setup.
The right cooling pad for your gaming laptop depends on the location of its vents. However, the majority of gaming laptops will have vents on the bottom. Some of them may have vents on the sides, and some may have vents on multiple sides. You should get a cooling pad with fans that blow at the hottest parts or blow air away from the vents.
Most laptop cooling pads will have no issues supporting 15.6-inch laptops or smaller. If your laptop is any bigger than that, make sure the laptop cooling pad can support larger sizes. Popular gaming laptops that are 17.3 inches or more are Alienware’s M17 R3, MSI’s Ge76 Raider, and Lenovo’s Legion 5i.
If you have a laptop smaller than 14 inches, you can consider a smaller laptop cooling pad for aesthetic purposes, but otherwise, it will still work properly for the most part.
Like laptop stands, laptop cooling pads will either have a fixed tilt or an adjustable one. The right tilt can reduce screen glare and eyestrain, which can improve your gaming experience.
Adjustable laptop cooling pads will let you adjust your comfortable viewing angle, even if you change sitting positions. The best angle for your laptop is where the top of your laptop screen is one to two inches above your eye level, usually somewhere between 15 to 45 degrees.
For the longest lifespan, you should find a laptop cooling pad made of durable materials. It also should not shake or wobble while in use.
Plastic is cheaper but less durable. The toughest materials are often wood or metals like aluminum and steel. Metal is considered the best since it naturally dissipates heat, which is the main reason people get laptop cooling pads for gaming laptops in the first place.
Some laptop cooling pads may also have extra features. They may act as USB hubs with extra USB ports, have built-in air filters, have foldable legs, or have cable management holes. Gaming laptop cooling pads often have LED lights for aesthetic purposes.
Gaming laptops might be portable, but there are always ways to make your overall experience better. Check out our other articles for more ideas!
