While shopping for a toilet plunger, you should think about the size of the handle and cup. Be sure to pick a material and style that meet your needs, too!
Toilet plungers can be categorized into two main types: accordion and flange. Flange plungers feature a wide, rounded rubber cup with a fold-out flap. This flap can fit easily into the toilet's drain opening and create an airtight seal that's needed to unclog a toilet.
Flange plungers are easy to use, and they can unclog drains and pipes as well. Some automatic flange plungers use a pressurized carbon dioxide canister to dislodge clogs quickly. However, you will have to purchase replacement carbon dioxide canisters, which might be costly.
But if you want a quick, easy way to fix your clogged toilet, an automatic flange plunger is a great option! It doesn't require much effort, making it a great choice for those with mobility challenges as well.
Accordion plungers are designed with a unique cup shape that looks like an accordion. The cup is often made of hard, rigid plastic that might end up scratching your toilet. This hard material makes it difficult to create a reliable seal with this kind of plunger, too!
But after you get used to working with an accordion plunger, you will find that it's highly effective in removing clogs. In fact, it can exert more force than flanged plungers and is ideal for stubborn clogs.
Keep in mind that if the suction cup is too small, it won't be able to create a tight seal. So you should take into consideration the size of the cup to ensure that it fits perfectly over your toilet's drain opening.
The standard size for a toilet's drain opening is three inches in diameter, so your plunger cup should be over three inches. Models with a graduated suction cup will work for most toilet drains, too.
Take note of the shape of the cup as well! Not all toilets have the same shaped bowls. Some are round, while others are elongated. Most cups should work for round bowls. But for elongated ones, you might want to look for a product with a narrow flange that gives you a better reach to remove clogs.
Traditionally, toilet plungers have a wooden handle. However, wood is a porous material that can absorb bacteria. Wood can also shrink or swell based on the changes in humidity. Since bathrooms are usually humid, we'd recommend something more water-resistant, like plastic or metal.
However, a metal handle might be too smooth and hard to hold onto while you're tackling a stubborn clog. So you might want to choose one with a rubberized grip for a comfortable, firm hold.
It's useful to know the handle's length, too! For discreet storage, consider a plunger with a short handle of around 12 inches. A long handle of over 20 inches, on the other hand, is better for avoiding splashback. Some handles are also adjustable to accommodate different heights and allow for easy storage.
If you don't want the plunger to interfere with your bathroom aesthetic, choose one that comes with a caddy. Not only does it keep the plunger out of your sight, but it also prevents toilet water from dripping onto your floor.
Some caddies even have a built-in drip tray that accelerates the evaporation of water, allowing your plunger to dry quickly.
Want to hang your toilet plunger? Look for a product with a built-in hook! Some products come with a toilet brush for cleaning, too.
