Before buying glitter nail polish, there are a few points you should take into consideration, such as the type and coverage. To help you with this, we’ve put together this handy buying guide!
Nail polishes come in two main varieties: regular polish and gel polish. If you can choose which type you need, then you will be able to really cut down your options!
If you’ve painted your nails at home before, then it’s very likely you’ve used regular nail polish. This type of nail polish doesn’t need any special equipment; you simply paint on the polish and wait for it to dry. Removing this polish is equally straightforward as it can be quickly removed with acetone or nail polish remover.
To get the most out of regular nail polish, you should apply it in layers. Begin with a base coat, then add your glitter color, and finish with a topcoat. Regular nail polish can chip easily and will probably only last for a few days to a week.
You will need a UV lamp to set the polish, and removing it requires more work. Your nails will need to be soaked in specially formulated acetone for around fifteen minutes for gel polish to be removed.
You may find that glitter gel polish is easier to apply with a sponger than with the brush that comes with the bottle. Its consistency is thicker than non-glitter polish, so it can be more difficult to apply. By using a sponge, you can dab it on your nails instead of trying to brush it on.
Glitter nail polish will make your nails sparkle and shine. If you want to maximize that effect, then try a holographic nail polish! Holographic nail polish isn’t massively different from other nail polishes, but it has additional pigments added to it.
These pigments are made with elements, such as aluminum and magnesium fluoride, that greatly refract light. This gives the polish its holographic properties and makes it shine more!
Different holographic nail polishes offer unique effects. They will have differently-sized glitter flakes that refract light in their own ways. You can also get holographic nail polish that scatters the light, giving the polish a random shine instead of a uniform one.
If you want to make your glitter polish even more special, try mood polishes. These polishes change color depending on the temperature of your nails and the air. The changes aren’t drastic, so don’t expect red nail polish to turn blue. But, you will get different shades of the same color.
If your nails are long, the color change effect will be more obvious. You will see that the color near the nail bed will be different from the color at the tip of your nails! This color-change effect can look spectacular with glitter polish.
Glitter nail polishes come in a large range of opacity. Some nail polishes are entirely opaque, and one layer will cover your nail in a rich glitter color the same way that any other nail polish would.
However, this isn’t the case for all glitter polishes. Many of them are glitter flakes in transparent nail polish and will need to be built up over several layers. This type of glitter polish can also be used over a base color. After painting your nail in your chosen color, add a layer of transparent glitter for some sparkle.
Opaque glitter polishes are quicker and require fewer layers. Transparent glitters are more flexible as you can use them alone or with many other colors.
Nail polishes contain a multitude of chemicals, which can include ingredients such as acetate or heptane. Thankfully, the majority of these chemicals are harmless. However, you should definitely avoid the so-called toxic trio of nail polish: dibutyl phthalate (DBT), toluene, and formaldehyde.
DBT is a plasticizer that increases the flexibility of a product but can cause irritation and damaging effects on the reproductive system. On the other hand, toluene is a paint thinner associated with dizziness and irritation.
Formaldehyde is a hardening agent frequently used in products like glue. A low amount of formaldehyde is acceptable, but a high level (0.5% for example) might lead to chronic health problems such as asthma, nausea, and even miscarriages.
You should also avoid formaldehyde resin, a by-product of formaldehyde that basically poses the same threat to human health, and camphor. If you're looking for even more safety, look for ones labeled like "5-free," "7-free," or "8-free." The higher the number, the fewer toxic ingredients there are in the formula.
If you're thinking about just swiping on the glitter nail polish, think twice! There is a better way to apply it, believe it or not, and it involves an ordinary makeup sponge. See how it's done in this video.
If you're looking for more products to make your nails beautiful or are just looking to expand your home salon, we have some more recommendations for you!
We found that the best glitter nail polishes are the right type of polish for the equipment you have available. The polish's opacity is important, as it determines if polish can be used alone or as a topcoat.
For extra sparkles and impact, why not try a holographic or mood-changing polish? Whatever glitter nail polish you choose, we hope that it makes your nails sparkle!
