Before buying a meditation cushion, there are a few points you should take into consideration, such as the filling and whether the covers are washable. To help you with this, we’ve put together this handy buying guide!
Meditation cushions allow you to sit comfortably on the floor while you meditate. They can also be used for decoration or as regular seating.
Traditionally, mediation cushions are round. These are also known as "zafu" and have long been used for meditation, particularly in Buddhist meditations. They’re often paired with a larger, thin square mat or "zabuton." This mat will help protect your knees and ankles while you sit on the cushion. You can also find oval or crescent-shaped cushions.
If you practice yoga-style meditation, then you have more options than just a zafu. A plush square cushion can act as both a zafu and zabuton. These aren’t as thick and high as round cushions but can still protect your ankles and knees.
If you need extra support or aren’t flexible enough for cushions, consider meditation stools or chairs. Whatever you choose, it’s important to make sure that you have enough room on the floor for your meditation cushion or mat.
Typically, a meditation cushion is like searching for a Goldilocks fit: you need one that's not too hard, not too soft, not too tall, and not too short. Decide on these elements first.
Once you decide on these elements, you can also choose the classic round cushion; or if the Easy Seat Pose (criss-cross applesauce) is not a comfortable seat for you, an oblong bolster cushion that helps aid in a Hero's Pose seated position (knees together, weight resting on the shins).
Many meditation cushions consist of a plain cushion and decorated cover. These are a good choice since they allow you to swap the cover, therefore changing the color or design. If you change your decor, you can change your cushion cover to match your color scheme without having to buy a whole new cushion!
More importantly, a removable cover can be easily washed depending on its material. If you meditate as part of longer and more active yoga practices, then your cushion cover may get sweaty. Plus, it’s always good to get a washable cushion cover just in case of accidental spills or pet damage!
If you make sure that any removable cover is machine-washable, your meditation cushions will always look fresh and new!
A meditation cushion with a removable cover is incredibly convenient since you can easily remove, wash, dry, and clean the cover. Among removable cushions are zippered or buttoned cushions. There are also options that are stain-resistant! Just take care to avoid drying your cushion in a commercial or machine dryer to avoid shrinkage.
Meditation cushions have different cushion fillings that have their own advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you choose the right one for you!
Buckwheat hulls are a natural and organic material that doesn’t retain heat. Cushions with this filling tend to be more supportive. They are malleable but will retain their shape, meaning they can be adjusted to your body’s contours.
However, some people find these pillows too hard and heavy. They tend to be smaller and can be noisy due to the sound of the hulls moving around. A common problem with buckwheat hull-filled cushions is that if the buckwheat isn't cleaned and prepared correctly, you may find some bugs.
If you’re looking for a solid base to keep your spine in a good position while you meditate, buckwheat hull is the ideal filling.
Cotton is another natural filling used for meditation cushions. Cotton is a more breathable material than most, so it won’t retain heat. Cushions filled with cotton can often be machine-washed and dried, but we would advise checking the washing instructions to make sure!
They can become flat over time and don’t offer as much support as buckwheat pillows. But, cotton filled-cushions are multi-purpose; they aren’t as supportive but can be comfortable and cool in several different situations. For example, doubling as a floor pillow.
Although not as common as the other materials on this list, some mediation cushions have a memory foam filling. Memory foam supports you by molding to your body and keeping this shape over time. However, memory foam can be heavy and traps heat more than other materials.
Most meditation cushions these days are filled with tiny Styrofoam-like beaded filling or densely packed poly. Either option works well in providing a seat that allows your spine to settle into place during long periods of sitting
But if you prefer a more ergonomic version, there are some more expensive cushions that are made of dense and moldable foam shaped to help your lower back feel supported during a seated posture.
This isn’t a great concern if you’re only going to be using your meditation cushion in one place. But, if you will be traveling with it, then a handle will make things easier. Many meditation cushions have a handle attached to the cover so that you can easily pick them up. This is ideal if you take your cushion with you to yoga class.
Purchasing a meditation cushion with at least one stitched handle - and potentially two handles - will make transporting your new tool so much easier.
The handle also helps you position and re-position your meditation cushion throughout your meditation more easily. The handle also doubles as a spot to attach your keys as needed, or hang your cushion inside a closet door for easy storage!
Karin says, "Since this is an item that you may use for other floor-seated activities, consider a darker color or a stain-resistant fabric to extend the longevity of your meditation cushion. These can double as easy kids' seats, makeshift pillows, and can even be used outdoors. The sturdier the material, the better.
I have seen so many beautifully stitched patterns and fabrics for meditation cushions, so purchase something that you will enjoy! Whether you need a softer cushion cover or a sturdier version, you won't go wrong as long as you keep your lifestyle in consideration when making your purchase."
Meditation cushions can be used for many different types of meditation, and yoga meditation is very popular. If you're looking for more products to support your yoga practice and help you feel more relaxed, we have some recommendations for you!
