Now that you have an idea of some of the best games available, let's take a look at some things to keep in mind when picking a game. For starters, think about what console you want to play on and what gameplay suits your playstyle.
Before you jump into holding a virtual gun and shooting people, demons, or even zombies, decide where you plan to play your first-person shooter (FPS) game. You can select among a PC, console, or mobile FPS game.
If you’ve already been playing games solely on your PC or phone, then picking an FPS on that platform would be ideal since you’re already familiar with the general controls. However, if it’s your first time, it’s easier to choose a platform by deciding if you want to play at home on a PC or outside on your smartphone or mobile console.
PC and console games, like Playstation or Xbox, will have much better graphics than mobile games or the Nintendo Switch. If you’re a picky gamer who wants an FPS with smooth graphics and no delay, choose a console game for the best visuals.
On the other hand, mobile FPS games are perfect if you're always on the go but still want to get a daily dose of some shooting action. The great thing about playing on your phone or a Switch is that you can play wherever you go as long as you have a reliable internet connection or if the game has an offline mode.
The next factor to consider is the FPS genre you want to play. Do you want to play with your friends against other players in an open-world setting? Or, do you want to play a shooter game that follows a story and needs more time to finish?
There are several sub-genres for shooter games, but you can generally separate them into three broad categories for easy classification.
Much like RPGs (role-playing games) that heavily require story progression to enjoy more of what the game has to offer, story-rich FPS games also have elements like leveling up or world exploration. These games are exciting to play because you enjoy the “shooting element” while getting a taste of the game’s story.
This type of FPS is recommended if you prefer playing solo. However, be prepared to put in a lot of hours to get that fancy upgrade to that gun you’ve been eyeing! Story-rich FPS games can be a bit more time-consuming compared to other genres.
If you’re the type who wants just to shoot as many players as you can to show off your aim in battle, then a battle royale FPS might be the game for you. In a battle royale player versus player (PvP) setting, you are put in an arena or map and have to fight for your life to win the game. Think of The Hunger Games with guns as weapons.
This type of FPS can be information-heavy and fast-paced for new players. However, after familiarizing yourself with the terms and items, it will be worth it when you win your first game against a team of other players.
When it comes to competitive shooter games, everyone is your enemy. You can't even trust your friends when they are “feeding” or, in non-gamer terms, intentionally dying. This type of FPS game lets you battle other players in a team of five or more. You can pair up with your friends or random people on the internet as you battle another team of players.
Competitive shooter games don’t require much time since one game runs for an average of 30 to 40 minutes. A drawback of this type of game, like many other games, is that you have to pay to get nice skins for your guns. If you take your FPS games seriously, then competitive games will unleash your inner fighter.
Deciding how much time you have to play a game before purchasing helps you avoid being disappointed or overwhelmed. If you are short on time and only like to play casually to relieve stress, then going for games like Valorant would be ideal; some game modes only last for ten minutes.
On the other hand, games like Borderlands and Titanfall require you to invest more time to progress through the story, but you can always save at any point and kickoff again where you left off!
Don't forget to check out the game's rating on Steam or Metacritic, popular websites that aggregate games' reviews. While you're at it, take a peek at the controls and overall gameplay to get a feel of the game.
Hearing what other players have to say about a game can help you decide as well. If many people only have positive remarks for a game, you may feel more confident trying it out to see what made it loved by many players. Negative reviews can help you learn about common complaints; you can decide for yourself if the game still seems worth playing.
Looking for more games to add to your collection? Here are some other games that will keep you, your family, and friends entertained for hours!
When it comes to shooting games, it's always ideal to stay positive when you find yourself dying over and over again. First-person shooter games are a great genre for exciting action and stress relief.
Remember to decide where you want to play and what kind of playstyle you enjoy to help you decide what game to get. Keep calm, aim, and shoot away!
