With so many different dumbbell racks to choose from, it can be difficult to know which is the best for you. Keep reading for some help in choosing the best dumbbell rack for you!
The best type of rack for you depends on several factors, such as your available space and the number of dumbbells you need to store. Tree weight racks are very small and compact, but can only hold a small number of dumbbells. They are best for lighter weights.
A-frame racks are still compact, but they are larger than tree weight racks. They usually hold five to ten pairs of weights, with five or six pairs being the most common. These are not suitable for the heaviest weights.
Horizontal shelves come in all shapes and sizes and have multiple shelves directly on top of each other. You can put heavier weights on these but make sure there is enough space between shelves.
Staggered shelves are very similar to horizontal shelves; they feature a staggered design, making it easier to pick up weights from the lower shelves. For this reason, they are good for heavier weights. However, because the shelves are staggered, they take up more space because of their width and depth.
Before you buy a dumbbell rack, consider how many and what type of dumbbells you have. Rubber dumbbells usually take up a little more space than metal ones, so you might not fit quite as many on a rack as the manufacturers advertise.
Keep in mind that the rack's width might not be the full story as the last couple of inches are unusable; they’re where the frame is. There is a difference between the width of a rack and the useable width of a shelf, so look for the latter measurement if available. If this isn’t listed, then subtract a couple of inches from the listed rack width.
No matter what dumbbells you have or rack you're looking at, it’s a good idea to measure your dumbbells before buying a rack so you can make sure that they will fit.
If you’re buying a dumbbell rack for home use, you may be limited on floor space. If this is the case, then look at taller A-frame or tree racks since they often tend to be smaller in width and taller.
However, be careful with multi-tiered racks as you need to make sure there is enough space between the racks to get the weights safely in and out. It’s also a good idea to keep heavier weights at the bottom and smaller weights on top so the structure doesn’t get overloaded and collapse.
Dumbbell racks are made of metal, but there are still a few things to consider. Iron racks are very sturdy but can rust, especially if you put sweaty dumbbells back on the rack. If you choose an iron rack, you must wipe down your weights every time you finish using them.
The vast majority of dumbbell racks are made from steel. Steel racks come in different gauges of steel. The higher the gauge, the thicker the steel is, and the more weight it can hold. Racks are mainly available in gauges between three and 36.
The best gauge depends on how heavy your weights are, but most home gyms should be well-served by a dumbbell rack that uses at least 14 gauge steel.
Whether the rack is made from steel or iron, it will be coated to prevent rust. However, this coating can get scratched by dumbbells. We recommend looking at reviews to see how the coating holds up to wear and tear. Or, you can look for ones that have things like rubber inserts to prevent scratching.
If you're looking to organize and improve your home gym, here are some more items you can look to add. With these products, you'll be fit in no time!
Dumbbells are a common type of exercise equipment due to their versatility, and it's easy to accumulate a collection of them. With a dumbbell rack, you can easily keep them organized.
Your home gym space will be neater, and it'll be easier to grab what you need during a workout. Whatever dumbbell rack you choose, we hope it helps you achieve your fitness goals!
