Before you choose a flannel shirt, check out the styles we’ll be obsessing over all season long! From different fits to different types of materials, read on for how to choose a perfect flannel shirt to keep you cozy in chilly weather.
Flannel is a soft and thick woven fabric. Carded wool and worsted yarn were originally used to make flannel, but today it's made from wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber. Flannel is also used to make tartan clothing, blankets, bedsheets, and sleepwear!
Welsh and European flannel is traditionally made from wool. Wool is something of a wonder-material! Due to the tightly-woven nature of wool, it is naturally water-resistant. It can absorb a decent amount of water before it feels wet, so you won't feel damp.
Wool also holds in heat when the weather is cold and holds in cool air when the weather is warm. This makes it a perfect transition material from summer to winter. Wool is also naturally antimicrobial, so it doesn't smell, which means you can wear a wool shirt for far longer without washing it.
Cotton flannel has become more popular since the Colonial expansionist period. Today it's highly sought after for its soft, rich feeling.
Lightweight cotton flannel keeps you warm without overheating you on mild winter days. Heavier cotton flannel can keep you warm on those extra-frigid days and on cold winter nights!
A lot of flannel apparel today is made with synthetic materials like polyester or nylon. Polyester is great at imitating wool it keeps you warm without weighing you down. This makes it a cheaper option, but keep in mind that many artificial textiles are more flammable and harder on the environment.
Flannels should not fit tightly. Why? Because they’re built to be worn as a comfy security blanket rather than a second skin - that is why we have grown to love these shirts!
A flannel shirt is at its best when it fits like an overshirt - not too baggy and not too tailored. When it comes to the sleeves of your flannel, make sure the shirt has enough room for your shoulders and is the same length as a dress shirt.
A truly great flannel shirt is a durable piece of clothing that you can use for layering or just throw on as-is and feel great in.
Let’s just be clear about something - flannel is not the same thing as plaid! While plaid refers to a pattern that can be produced on any fabric, flannel is a type of fabric that has been created with softness and thickness in mind. While some plaid shirts are made from flannel, not all plaid garments are flannel.
To keep you warm this winter we found some great products for your wardrobe. From comfy socks to jean jackets, we've got you covered for all occasions!
