Need a little help finding a case? Choose a contact lens case with clear labels so the compartment for each lens is easy to spot. Also, go for one that is easy to open and secure enough so that the cleaning solution doesn't leak. Don't forget that extras and goodies are great, too!
Since right and left contact lenses can have different prescriptions, it’s really important to keep them in their proper storage containers. Putting the wrong lens over the wrong eye can be uncomfortable! To avoid mixing them up, choose a contact lens case that makes it easy for you to tell which lens should go where.
While most come with an L and R label (for left and right), others only have an L or an R label. However, some have a color-coding scheme which makes it much easier to differentiate between the compartments. These ones usually do a better job of avoiding mix-ups since color-coded labels are much easier to spot!
Some cases, however, don't have any labels or color codes. If your lenses are the same prescription, then you can opt for one of these.
Contact lens cases come in two main styles: screw-top lids and flip-top lids. You can also get cases that come in a small compact-style kit!
Most people are familiar with contact lens cases that have a screw-on cap. These caps are the ones you twist to open and close. These covers are usually more secure since they shut more tightly. However, if you're in a hurry, they can take a bit of time to open or close!
Though screw-on caps are less prone to leaking, make sure that you twist them correctly since they could still leak if they aren’t sealed tightly enough or are sealed at an angle. The last thing you want is your contacts drying out because the solution leaked!
Other cases come with flip-top lids, which you only need to lift to open and a push to snap shut. These ones are time-savers since you don't need to do much to get them to open and close.
However, keep in mind that they're a bit more prone to spillage. This is especially true when you think you've snapped it shut, but it didn't actually lock! They could also pop open by accident if you throw them in your bag, which could result in lost lenses and a mess.
There are even convenient compact-style kits that hold your contact lens case along with other little tools. If you go for this type of kit, make sure that the actual covers on the contact lens containers close securely enough so that the solution doesn’t end up spilling inside your compact mirror.
Some cases even come with handles or bands that you can loop around your wrist, which make them easy to carry around. Since these kits are portable and have everything you need in one spot, they're great for traveling!
Some contact lens cases come with cool extras that make life much easier. Some cases include a mirror, which makes it easy to wear or remove your contacts no matter where you are since you'll be able to see what you're doing.
Other kits come with tools that make it easier to take care of your lenses. Forceps or tweezers let you pick up your lenses without using your fingers - this tool is especially handy in a place with no soap and running water! Contact lens sticks let you put your lenses onto your eyes without using your fingers.
Plungers hold a bit of cleansing solution that you fill your case to keep your contacts disinfected and moist. This is great for traveling if you don't want to carry around a big bottle of cleansing solution! Other cases even give you a compartment to hold a pair of glasses for backup.
Some even come with special features that help keep your lenses extra clean. A neutralizing disc comes with cases made for lenses cleaned with peroxide-based solutions. This particular feature turns hydrogen peroxide into a sterile saline solution, producing bubbles in the process.
Having a good contact lens case is just the first step in using it and your contact lenses correctly. Here are some tips we have to get the most out of both your lenses and your case.
This might seem like obvious advice to some, but you'd be surprised at how much some lens wearers think they can get away with! Before touching your eyes or lenses at all, you should always wash your hands first. Your eyes can be exposed to some serious bacteria otherwise.
Next, you should always wash your lens case after use - with contact cleaning solution. Tap water might seem like a good replacement, but it has a lot of minerals and chemicals in it that don't really belong in your eyes for extended periods of time (think of the lenses trapping all that in - gross).
And, obviously, you should be cleaning your contacts with your favorite contact cleaning solution before and after use. If you notice any dust, lint, or grime on your hands, lenses, or lens case, then it doesn't belong in your eye.
No matter how well you clean your contact lens case, it should be replaced at a maximum of every three months. Bacteria that can cunningly avoid your contact lens solution can still seep in and form a "biofilm" of harmful gunk on the inside of your lens cases. You want that to end up in your eyes? We sure don't.
Try marking your calender, setting a reminder in your phone, or writing down the date you started using the case in order to keep track of when your case should be replaced.
