There has never been a time where our homes have contained more tech and appliances! It seems that every aspect of our lives has something electronic to make daily activities easier, faster, or more productive. However, our homes don't have enough outlets for all these appliances, so power strips are an important buy!
Surge protection power strips are especially important to protect your appliances from power surges that would normally destroy them. We found that the 12 Outlets Surge Protector Power Strip by Holsem to be the best unit on the market. It has a high joule rating, USB ports, and can accommodate oversized plugs. Keep reading for the rest of our favorites, and take a look at our guide for some tips on picking out the right product!
A power strips is an easy way to add extra outlets to your home, but a surge protector power strip does more than just that - they protect your appliances against any power surges that originate in your home or from your utility company.
Although a surge protector power strip adds an extra layer of security to protect your appliances, they do not last forever. With every surge, the protection wears down a little more until eventually they will no longer protect your electronics at all.
It depends on the power strip and the frequency of surges, but we advise replacing power strips every three to five years.
It's also worth noting that power strips with multiple outlets aren't made for high-power appliances. They're suitable for appliances such as TVs, computer equipment, and so on. Electronics like microwaves or space heaters can easily trip the power strip!
Each power strip has a maximum wattage it can handle, so check this before you plug high-power appliances in. If you want to protect appliances that use more energy, it's best to choose surge protectors that only have one or two outlets.
Here are our choices for the best surge protector power strips currently available in different joule ratings, cord lengths, outlet numbers, and more.

Before you purchase a surge protector power strip, there are several things to take in consideration. Choosing the right one is important as it will be the last line of protection for your expensive and beloved electronics!
Surge protectors come with a variety of outlets, so consider what you need to plug in and where. If it is to be used in a home office or to power entertainment units in the living room, look for strips that have larger numbers of outlets - at least eight would be a good number!
If it’s for the bedroom, you probably need to plug in fewer appliances - four outlets may be sufficient. Also, look at how long the cord is on the power strip. If it needs to be positioned far from the wall outlet, then make sure the cord is long enough to reach that far.
Some appliances use bulkier plugs that take up more space. Strips that have outlets close together are not made for these kinds of plugs! Instead, look for strips that have the outlets spaced out or have a couple set apart from the others.
Some power strips will offer a mix of the two with spaced-out outlets on one side and closer ones on the other. Think about what you'll plug into these power strips in advance to make sure you're getting the most bang for your buck.
As well as outlets for standard plugs, you can also get strips for other types of devices. So much of our modern technology can be plugged into USB ports, such as cell phones, console controllers, and cameras. Buying a power strip that has USB ports means you won't need to scramble for adapters!
Some strips also have telephone ports so you can power a landline phone, while others even have USB-C ports.
Look for power strips that have an auto shut-off feature. That way, if there is a power surge and the strip can no longer protect your appliances, it won’t allow any electricity to get through. If it doesn’t have an auto shut-off feature, then at least get a strip that has an indicator light that will notify you if your appliances aren’t protected.
If you don’t have either of these options, then you won’t know when the surge protection burns out - your electonics will be in danger!
The joule rating is of the utmost importance - it tells you how much energy the surge protector can take before it fails. The higher number, the better protected your appliances will be. We would recommend looking at power strips that have joule ratings of at least 2,000.
However, there isn’t a visible meter that monitors the health of this. So, although a higher rating will last longer in theory, there’s no way to monitor how the joule rating is fairing or if it’s been reduced by power surges.
The surge protection value tells you how much the energy will be reduced by the strip during a power surge. In other words, it tells you how much voltage the strip will allow through to your appliances. So in this case, lower values are best.
We recommend looking for strips with a surge protection value of 400 volts at the most. Ideally, 330 volts is what you should look for.
There's no point purchasing a surge protection power strip without any appliances to plug into it! Two of the most popular electronics in our homes are cell phones and TVs, so we've chosen some products to help charge your phone and display your TV.
Surge protection power strips are an essential purchase for your home! They provide more power outlets and protect your appliances against power surges. Choosing the right power strip can be the difference between having to replace all of your appliances or having them last for years!
Whatever surge protection power strip you choose, we hope it protects your appliances well!
