How to Choose Exercise Balls

In order to help you choose the perfect exercise ball, we created this list with the main aspects you need to consider before you purchase one.

1

Pick the Right Size for You

Pick the Right Size for You

Exercise balls come in many sizes. Manufacturers usually have charts to help you decide your size based on your height. We found that the right size is the one that allows your legs to make a perfect 90-degree angle when your feet are flat on the floor.

Keep your weight in mind as well. More weight equals more pressure on the ball and will result in the ball flattening more and giving you less loft. If you think you may be heavier than the average person that has the same height as yourself, then pick the next bigger size. This way your legs will still make the 90-degree angle that you're looking for.

You should also keep in mind that exercise balls have a weight limit. Take this into consideration if you’re planning to add weights to your workout as you will need to ensure the ball can take both your body weight and the additional weight of your equipment.

Choosing the right size exercise ball is super important. If you choose to ignore this step, it could result in an injury. You want to make sure that you choose an exercise ball that is proportional to your height.

2

Look for a Quality Material That Won't Slip or Burst

Look for a Quality Material That Won't Slip or Burst

When it comes to exercise balls and safety, it all depends directly on the quality of the build. The first thing you should consider is the material the ball is made fromMost balls are made of PVC plastic but it is possible to purchase some made from rubber. In general, balls with thicker walls are less likely to burst, with 0.08 inches being a good thickness.

The type of PVC plastic that is used is designed to specifically prevent bursting. It also gives the ball the necessary properties for a good workout, as it makes the ball expandable and bouncy while ensuring it's resistant to damage.

Rubber functions in a very similar way but isn't quite as durable as PVC. You should also be careful with exercise balls made with rubber as they can sometimes contain latex. If you have a latex allergy, we would advise avoiding rubber balls as they don't always clearly specify if latex is used in the build.

As an additional layer of safety, many exercise balls have an anti-burst coating or design. Features like this ensure that if the worst does happen and your ball bursts, instead of it bursting in a sudden pop that could cause injury, it will instead steadily deflate. This steady deflation will keep you safe.

Another consideration when choosing an exercise ball is the texture of the surface. The sweet point between sticky and slippery will give you the most comfort and ease for your workout routine. When you look at exercise balls, make sure they have a non-slip surface or a gentle dimpled or ribbed texture.

When buying an exercise ball online though, it can be very difficult to fully understand what the texture is like just from photos and product descriptions. We would recommend looking at reviews from previous purchasers as their hands-on experience will be the best judge of how the ball works in practice.

Quality is very important! An exercise ball should support the weight of your body while moving, deflate slowly if it gets a hole in it, and retain air. If you use an exercise ball in most of your workouts, you want to make sure that you purchase one that can withstand tough exercises.

3

Factor in Inflation Time and Effort

Factor in Inflation Time and Effort

Don’t get discouraged if your exercise ball is known for taking a lot of time and effort to inflate. Although it's not a definitive rule, it's often the case that the best-quality exercise balls are the ones that take the longest to get inflated. A good ball won't need constant reinflation and can be used multiple times without needing any additional air. Some might even stay fully inflated for a year without needing any care.

Many exercise balls have a process where you have to inflate 50 percent one day and the rest the day after. Others will need to be inflated and then kept overnight before being used. Make sure you read the inflation instructions fully, both before you begin to inflate the ball and before you use it.

Many exercise balls will come with their own pump, but this isn't essential. You can use any air pump to inflate an exercise ball so don't worry if the pump with your ball looks complicated. You can use a simple mattress or bicycle pump instead if you find that easier.

Gentry Washburn
Personal Trainer
Gentry Washburn

For me, this is a very important aspect. Some exercise balls come without pumps, but the quality is sometimes better. But for me, I would rather purchase an exercise ball with a pump so that inflation time is shorter and I am not spending wasted time blowing it up myself.

4

Consider Extra Features Like Included Pumps, Resistance Bands, and More

Consider Extra Features Like Included Pumps, Resistance Bands, and More

There are many additional features and extras you can also look for when you buy an exercise ball. None of these are essential, but they can help improve your workout in many different ways. One of the most common extras is a pump to inflate your ball. We mentioned this in the last section and if you don't have an air pump already, buying one with your ball is a good idea.

Many balls come with exercise guides to help you get the most out of your exercise ball. These can be in the form of DVDs, posters, or downloads, and are a great option for beginners. Resistance bands are commonly used with exercise balls so it's not unusual to see a set included. They're often attached to a stability base.

On the topic of stability bases, these are also worth considering. They are inflatable ring-shaped bases that the ball can be placed upon to keep it stable and prevent it from moving when exercising. If you're considering using the ball as a chair for a desk, then a stability ring will be a good extra to have.

Gentry Washburn

Gentry Washburn

You definitely want to purchase an exercise ball with a pump. Resistance bands and extras would be nice, but if it lowers the quality of the exercise ball, I feel those are unnecessary. Make sure to read reviews on the specific exercise ball that you are wishing to purchase to see how long it lasted for others.

  • High weight limit
  • Includes foot pump

Cons:

  • Difficult to fully inflate

This ball is available in a large range of sizes so there is bound to be a size for everyone, no matter how tall or short. The smaller sizes can also be used for hand ball raises or inner leg squeezes. It has a very high weight limit and thick walls so you can feel secure when exercising.

According to some reviewers, the ball was very difficult to fully inflate. The manufacturers recommend inflating it over a 24 hour period and letting it fully deflate once before using it, so keep this in mind.
