We know, this one sounds pretty obvious, but when it comes to exercise balls, your safety depends directly on the quality of the build.
Most stability balls are made of PVC and some others are made of rubber. What matters is that their walls are thick enough to prevent bursting. If you have a latex allergy, we recommend that you go for one that's made of PVC since the rubber ones don't always specify whether they have some latex or not.
How well the ball works depends on the texture of the surface. The sweet point between sticky and slippery will give you the most comfort and ease for your workout routine.
Accidents do happen, and in case your ball gets punctured you would rather notice it in time to avoid any injuries and not fall to the ground! An anti-burst ball can still pop, but it should deflate slowly and not immediately.
Most manufacturers claim that their balls are anti-burst but don't provide numbers to back it up. However, the thicker the ball is, the less likely it is to get punctured. Unfortunately this won't tell you about the strength of the seams and so on, which is why you should read the reviews carefully too.
Exercise balls come in many sizes. Manufacturers usually have charts to help you decide your size based on your height. We found that the right size is the one that allows your legs to make a perfect 90-degree angle when your feet are flat on the floor.
Keep your weight in mind as well. More weight equals more pressure on the ball and thus more flattening and less loft. If you think you may be heavier than the average person with your height, then pick the next bigger size. This way your legs will make the 90-degree angle that you're looking for.
Also keep ini mind that exercise balls have a weight limit. Take this into consideration if you’re planning to add weights to your workout.
Don’t get discouraged if your exercise ball is known for taking a lot of time and effort to inflate. Our experience is that the best-quality ones are oftentimes the ones that take the longest to get inflated. Most of them have a process in which you have to inflate 50 percent one day and the rest the day after.
A good ball doesn’t need constant re-inflation, so this is an effort that you will very seldomly have to make.
Try not to get dazzled by the included pump. Though this is a great perk for some models, for some others the quality of the pump is not as good as that of the ball. You can also inflate them with an air pump for bikes and air mattresses.
Repairing or patching will affect the function of your ball and you will risk getting injuries if it doesn't hold. If you do try to patch a small hole, read online tips carefully and use quality materials for the patch. However, we strongly recommend just getting a new one.
