While most casual buyers rely on the battery capacity only, a few minutes of research reveals there’s more to power banks than just how many milliamps the battery is.
This is a device that you'll be carrying around a lot, so durability is just as important as portability.
Most portable phone chargers contain a standard lithium-ion battery pack inside a casing. Cheaper ones, however, have a plastic housing or casing in which the parts are assembled. Plastic parts are prone to heating up or getting damaged when dropped, but chargers enclosed in plastic shells are lighter than metal ones.
Premium chargers are encased in aluminum or other kinds of metal shells, which are tougher, and cannot be damaged easily even if dropped. If portable phone chargers are dropped and damaged, they can be subject to accidental bursting or fires, so drop-protection and toughness should be given priority.
Most portable phone chargers nowadays contain a charging capacity of at least 10000 milliampere hours. This is enough to charge modern smartphones around one and one and a half times.
It is important to note that a portable phone charger, regardless of whether it is premium or cheap, cannot provide the 100% of the charging capacity as mentioned by the manufacturer. Most experts determine that a portable charger can provide 70-80% of the advertised charging capacity.
10000 mAh may be enough for college students or working professionals who just need a charge on the go but have access to power outlets if the need arises in their colleges or offices.
For emergency purposes, or when going hiking or on a vacation where power outlets are not guaranteed, it is best to carry a higher capacity charger, like 20000 mAh.
Android smartphones support either USB-B or USB-C type charging, and iPhones use their own proprietary technology called Lightning ports.
Most modern smartphones are shifting to USB-C type charging, which gives faster charging and hassle-free reversible connectivity.
USB-B type charging is also still found in a lot of smartphones, especially mid-range or lower-end smartphones.
Some premium and mid-range smartphones now also support fast-charging, which occurs at a higher amperage output and can power up the phone in significantly less time.
Smartphones rated to support fast-charging can also be charged via normal chargers, but the reverse is not true, and charging normal smartphones with fast-chargers may damage the internal phone battery.
Care should be taken to ensure that portable phone chargers with fast-charging capacity are only used with smartphones that support fast-charging.
Some premium portable phone chargers nowadays now support wireless charging, which is present in most high-end flagship smartphones.
Some portable phone chargers also provide additional features like a built-in cable, two or three charging ports to charge multiple smartphones simultaneously, and even two different types of ports (USB-B and USB-C).
Active and busy smartphone users won't settle for being tied down! Have a look at these other great items for work and leisure tech you can't live without.
The primary concern when buying a new portable charger is how much capacity the battery has, but while that rating is surely important, each customer also uses the power bank in a different setting.
Do you need one that's rugged, waterproof, and drop-proof? Or are newer technological features like fast charging and reverse charging your priority? Keep our tips in mind when shopping for your portable charger!
