And why they didn't. 

A2 Care's Gel-Type Toilet Deodorizer is a colorless, odorless, non-stimulant deodorizer with antibacterial ingredients that will leave your room smelling clean and fresh the moment you open it. 

It did well against the smell of ammonia but other odors were only mitigated a bit. Since it comes with antibacterial ingredients, we would recommend putting one in your bathroom. 

Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals' Sawaday Stick English Garden has a mild fragrance so it doesn't do so well against stronger smells. We recommend it for people who enjoy a floral scent. Seeing as how it's a stick-type, you might find it a bit difficult to find the perfect place for it. 

Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals' Dodeka Unscented Deodorizer was able to mitigate unpleasant odors during our examination. And since it's scentless, it didn't mix with any existing odors in the room. It's capable of lasting around 180 days. 

S.T.'s Deodorant Power Clear Beads is made from baking soda, sodium carbonate and amino acids and able to absorb and eliminate odors. We found it was capable of getting rid of the smell of ammonia but didn't do a good job of getting rid of fatty acids found in body odor. 

Kankyo Daizen's Magic Gel-Type Deodorizer, although effective, contains odor-absorbing polymers that take time to evaporate. We think it's an overall good deodorizer as long as you're not looking to get rid of smells in an instant. 

Seven Premium's Deodorizing Beads use citric acid, which is supposed to suppress and rid the area of unwanted odors, but during our tests it wasn't able to get rid of the strong smell of ammonia. It also leaves a certain unpleasant smell lingering in your nostrils. We did like the simple packaging and cost performance of this product.

S.T.'s Deodorizing Charcoal traps foul odors in microscopic holes found in the charcoal, a process that takes a bit of time. But the chic, black packaging is perfect for any room. 

Activate Companies' Air Brighten gets rid of everything from pet odor to cigarettes to formaldehyde just from opening the top. 

However, since it's the type that absorbs the odor before eliminating it, it didn't score well in fast-acting ability. And since it lasts for only five or six weeks, it's not as cost effective as some of the other options.

We purchased the top 18 best-selling Japanese standing deodorizers from Japanese websites like Amazon and Rakuten and put them to the test!

We tested each product for the following two criteria.

① Deodorizing ability

② Pleasantness of scent

First, we tested each product for how well it deodorized. 

We recreated odors produced by humans like the smell of ammonia and body odor fatty acid smells, placed each deodorizer in the bags, let them sit for an hour, and had our odor specialist smell the contents of each. He then gave each product a rating of A+ to D. 

A lot of standing deodorizers are bead-types that absorb odors in the air before eliminating them. The test was conducted over only a few minutes, making it difficult to grasp the effectiveness of these products in such a short period of time. 

On the other hand, the liquid and gel-type deodorizers use their fragrance to quickly get rid of any unwanted odors in the air. 

Next, we tested the products for how pleasant or unpleasant the overall smell was after the unwanted odors mixed with the fragrance of each deodorizer. We then gave each one a rating of A+ to D. 

Neither the absorbent nor fragrant-types were able to eliminate all bad smells within a matter of minutes but most of the products we tested were able to suppress the foul smell of ammonia on a satisfactory level. 

We were delighted to find out that a large number of products we tested didn't leave an unpleasant scent when mixed with the foul odors we were trying to eliminate. 

Before purchasing your standing deodorizer, we would like you to consider the following four points.

There are a few types of deodorizer you can purchase: a regular deodorizer, an aromatic deodorizer, or a deodorizing absorbent.

These deodorizers suppress the bacteria that cause odors in the first place. Unscented deodorizers are usually of this type. We recommend this type for those of you who don't like the fragrant smell that usually accompanies deodorizers. 

These deodorizers come in two types: ones that also suppress the bacteria that cause odors, and ones that only release fragrant chemicals to mask them. In other words, the latter doesn't get rid of bacteria or odor at all but just covers smells.

We recommend this kind of deodorizer for those of you who would like to replace odors with a scent of their liking.

Note that these are different from ordinary air fresheners, which only have strong scents.

These deodorizers use activated carbon or clay to absorb the bacteria molecules that cause odor. We find that these work the best in smaller spaces.These types are great for the refrigerator or closets.

We recommend standing deodorizers for anyone wishing to get rid of smells in their living room or large areas. These deodorizers come in a variety of types: liquid, solid, stick, candle, and plug-in, so choose the one that best matches your lifestyle.
