10 Best Eyebrow Brushes in 2022 (Makeup Artist-Reviewed)

The perfectly-arched eyebrows of models, celebrities, and influencers are something many people wish to replicate. After all, how hard could it be? For those who've tried, it's often not easy to get our brows on fleek! You might have pulled off the right side, but when combined with the left brow you realize they're not straight. Since brows frame our face and often do the heavy-lifting in completing our looks, it's important to have them look flawless and symmetrical!

Let us be the first to give you some reassuring news - it's not impossible to achieve the same brows you see on Instagram. Using the right brush is the first step. So we've gone through everything eyebrow brush-related that Amazon and Sephora have to offer and compiled a list of the best ones to fit any brow shape or desired outcome. We've created a buying guide that was reviewed by an expert to assist you in picking out the right brush as well.

How to Choose an Eyebrow Brush - Buying Guide

The boom in the cosmetics industry combined with ever-changing beauty trends gave birth to countless eyebrow styles. Gone are the days when we simply filled them in based on our natural brows.

Now we can manipulate them to take on any shape and look! Read on to discover the type of brush you will need for a specific look and which brush to use for different types of eyebrow makeup.

1

Pick a Brush Based on Coverage and Desired Outcome

You need the right brush to get eyebrows that are defined yet subtle or thick without looking like two caterpillars have taken a fancy to your forehead! Behind every great brow is a great brush.

Below is a list of the most desired brow styles popular today and the type of brush that gets you there.

Wide Brushes for Full Brows

Wide Brushes for Full Brows

Go for a larger brush that's thin but wide or fluffy but soft to get dense and full brows. These brushes grab powders efficiently and evenly deposits makeup onto your brows smoothly.

It's great for getting that that youthful "I woke up like this" look. Wide brushes are also ideal for those blessed with nicely-shaped brows in need of only minimal touchups.

Angled Brushes for Structured Brows

Angled Brushes for Structured Brows

If you want a more angled brow, meaning you can clearly see the border separating the arch from your skin, an angled brush gives you the needed precision for such a task. Wonder how the Kardashians get those sharp brows? Angles, angles, angles.

It's hard to mistake an angled brow brush with their distinct slanting bristles and sharp corners. This lets you take control in structuring your desired look, especially at the edges.

Liner Brushes for Filled-in Brows

Liner Brushes for Filled-in Brows

Liner brushes are typically slanted, as if someone accidentally sat on the brush and bent it, or looks like a paintbrush. A liner brush helps those with sparse brows create an illusion that there's more natural hair present.

Feel free to also use this brush for final touches. The ultra-thin brush tip lets you create more eyebrow hair using makeup. It's almost like painting on your forehead!

Concealer Brushes for Instagram Brows

Concealer Brushes for Instagram Brows

You've most probably come across these brows scrolling through social media posts by beauty vloggers and Instagram influencers.

The Instagram brow is a blocked-in brow, as if you've taken a brow stamp and smacked it seamlessly on your forehead. They're larger and longer than your natural brows and have been highlighted or bronzed perfectly to look gorgeous in front of the camera.

A concealer brush is key to achieve such a look. You can use a regular concealer brush as long as it's small with a slightly rounded edge. You can run the brush along the underside of your brow with concealer or foundation to create a sharper line.

Eyebrow Definer Brush for More Control

Eyebrow Definer Brush for More Control

This brush is for those who love experimenting with different brow looks (and have a pair of full brows to match). These tiny hair combs are great at styling and shaping your natural brows to the desired look before makeup application. You can even use the brush to groom the brows to see what needs trimming, plucking or threading.

2

Choose the Right Brush for Your Makeup

Nowadays we're working with more eyebrow makeup, like pomades, creams, and waxes, on top of the typical pencil and powder. What's exciting is that each type creates a different outcome and serves a specific purpose. Here's a quick guide on which brush to use based on the makeup texture.

Pencils are Great for Shaping but Need Some Shading

Pencils are Great for Shaping but Need Some Shading

A brow pencil is ideal for lining and shaping the outer layers of the brows, but if you don't blend and shade, it will look like a child drew on your face (no offense). To avoid those issues, get a broad or concealer brush for blending.

Gel and Pomade Require a Brush with Short, Dense Bristles

Gel and Pomade Require a Brush with Short, Dense Bristles

The short, dense bristles of an angled brush make it the top choice of professionals for applying thicker consistencies of gels, pomades, and wax-based brow makeup. All you need are short, quick strokes of color application to get a defined and structured eyebrow look.

Powder Needs a Sponge or Wide Brush for Layering and Refining

Powder Needs a Sponge or Wide Brush for Layering and Refining

We all want full brows without bald spots. To help get that look, try running a powder-based brow product to get a bushy yet natural-looking appearance. To obtain the kind of eyebrows others wish their mothers gave them, some skillful layering and refining using a sponge or wide brush is required.

3

Two (or More) Brushes is Better Than One

Whether you're an amateur makeup lover or work with makeup as a profession, one could never have just one brush. Plus, we lose pens and pencils all the time. The same applies to these tiny brushes that fall and roll away to oblivion. Having different styles of brushes increases the variety of looks you can make too!

Consider Duo Brushes for Double Action

Consider Duo Brushes for Double Action

More and more makeup brushes today are a combination of two commonly-used makeup applicators. It may be a brow pencil on one end and a brush at the other or a brush and spoolie combo. Cosmetic companies have learned that providing efficiency and convenience to their clients is the way to go.

A brush that has a spoolie on one end and an angled brush on the other end is the best tool created for the brows. A spoolie is always needed when creating a brow look to groom and shape to how you prefer. An angled brush is the most used when creating a brow shape because it will give you the most natural hair like look.

Use the spoolie to groom and shape the brow and the angled brush to fill in any areas of the brow with a feathery stroke. The angled dense brush will pick up the brow product to apply to the face.

It's great to have the spoolie connect on the other end because you should be brushing through the brow before, during and after the application. Going through with the spoolie during the brow application will make sure the product is applied evenly. Lightly brush the product into the hairs giving you that natural look.

The High-Precision Brush that Mimics Natural Hairs

The super-fine edge of this angled brush gives you the needed precision to sweep color through your brows for a professional finish. This high-end brush also allows you to mimic natural hairs thanks to the soft, synthetic bristles.

Because the brush is so thin, reviewers noted that it doesn't pick up a lot of product. However, this is exactly what many desire when going for a highly-defined shape that's not overly dense! The spoolie is also perfectly shaped, as it's not too long or flimsy, which pleased reviewers.

This set is especially nice since the bristle material is compatible with powders, creams, pomades and gel brow makeup. Plus, getting a complete set of brushes saves you from making multiple purchases!

Users commented that the brushes were a bit too soft and didn't hold products well. However, the long handles provided a better grip during application! For many, this benefit outweighed any criticisms.

The Brush Set That Meets Your Daily Needs

What's better than one eyebrow brush? Three. Made of premium synthetic fiber, these brushes are gentle on skin. The high-density and fine texture bristles ensure that makeup stays on your brows, even if its loose powder.

This brush set has become a staple in many makeup kits. The pack comes with three of the same brush, which lets you use one for each kind of brow makeup (or stash one in different locations for that quick brow pick me up).

Some reviewers found the brushes to be too soft and didn't absorb products efficiently. The spoolie, though, could be bent slightly to your needs, which is a great plus for many.

The Brush That Perfectly Shapes and Grooms Your Brows

Those who use brow combs know all too well the hassle of having to pick up the brush from the floor because it gets detached from the handle. This one, however, comes in one piece. It's great for shaping and managing your brows into whatever style pleases you.

Reviewers pointed out that the brush handle might be too small for some, making it difficult to maneuver. However, it does come with a nifty pouch! So you can rest assured that this particular brush will last longer than its predecessors.

While some found the angled brush to be too wide, the thickness and consistency held powder makeup well and didn't send the product flying off before it reached the brow.

The Firm Yet Thin Eyebrow Brush That Meets Expectations

Heavy makeup users go through this particular brush like hotcakes and purchase this same product again and again. It might be light on your wallet, but this brush is not made with cheap metal and the bristle quality is excellent. Many found the size of the angled brush and spoolie to be perfect for achieving the style of brows they wanted.

Those going for full and defined brows commented that the brush was too thin and thus took more time to fill in. Meanwhile, this product received a lot of praise in skillfully creating an au natural look.

The bushy brow look is super in right now and totally on trend. In the makeup routine, brows are normally the first step you start with when doing your makeup. I like to use a tapered brow brush because it can create an arch you did even know your brows could achieve. This brow brush gives you a natural look at the corner of the eyes and can give you a full, defined brow.

This brush can be used to fill any missing hairs or to straighten up any stray hairs. I am currently loving the Mac cosmetics small angled tapered brush on myself as well as my clients. This brush can easily help define and create a brow look. It is a great brush for thin brows if you want to create a full shaped brow. It gives you that hair like stroke and can be easily wiped away if any mistakes are made.

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to checking our buying guide for accuracy, Natalya took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about eyebrow brushes.

How do I clean an eyebrow brush?

Natalya told us, "The best way to clean a makeup brush is to use a brush cleaner and 99 percent alcohol. The best brush cleaner that the makeup industry has created would be the Cinema Secrets brush cleaner. This brush cleaner kills bacteria and instantly cleans your brushes. This product does not have you scrubbing your brushes and leaves the bristles soft. With this brush cleaner, you do not need to spray 99 percent alcohol after because this brush already kills the bacteria on the brush.

If you want to use what you have in your kitchen to clean your brushes, using Dawn dish soap and olive oil will give you a clean brush. Mix the dish soap and a little bit of olive oil to give your brushes back that soft feel. Dip your brushes into the mixture and rinse with water. Let air dry before using.

For your own personal brushes, try not to go over two weeks without cleaning your brushes. If you do not clean your brushes, bacteria will cause breakouts or your brushes will not perform as they normally would."

How do I make an eyebrow brush thinner?

"Sometimes over time, the bristles of the brow brush can change its shape. Making a brow brush thinner can give you precision. You can even create a lipstick brush from a brow brush. Cut down a brush to make it narrow and thinner to create those hair like strokes.

You can easily flatten or thin your brow brush to create a perfect angle for your brows or even your eyeliner. You can cut the length down and angle it off by using eyelash scissors. Cut the angle you want and then grab a razor to go in and evenly remove hairs. Taking a razor blade to the brush can thin the brush out," Natalya says.
