Wearing goggles is a must for protecting your eyes, so that's why we've created a list of the top ten best swimming goggles. The number one pair was Speedo's Hydrospex Classic Swim Goggle, which comes in a variety of lens colors for different swimming settings and features a soft nose bridge, doesn't leak, and suctions well. How to Choose Swimming Goggles

Goggles are an important part of any swimmer's gear! Consider the following specs before making a purchase.

1

Ensure the Nose Piece Fits Your Face

Ensure the Nose Piece Fits Your Face

The nose piece or bridge is a critical part of a pair of goggles because it affects how the goggles fit and how well they seal and keep water out. You'll want to find a nose piece that is not too wide or narrow for your face shape and nose size. Ideally, your goggles will have adjustable nose piece or multiple nose piece options.

The perfect seal also prevents undue pressure on your nose and keeps the lenses from digging into your face. If your nose piece is made of latex rubber or a similar elastic material, you’ll experience more comfort. The one downside is that a latex rubber nose piece will wear out quickly, so you'll have to consider the cost of comfort.

If you do pick a pair with a fixed nose piece made of durable plastic, be sure it fits your face comfortably. We recommend trying to find an adjustable plastic bridge or a pair of goggles that comes with nose pieces in different sizes.

2

Find the Best Lens Color for Your Swim Environment

There are several types of lenses you can choose from when picking your pair of goggles. The right lens color for you depends on where you're swimming and what the light conditions are. Here's what you need to know about some common lens colors.

Versatile Amber Lenses Work in Different Light Conditions

Versatile Amber Lenses Work in Different Light Conditions

If you swim in a variety of locations with differing light conditions, consider goggles with amber lenses. You can use them both indoors and outdoors. In low light conditions, they can make your vision clearer, while in bright light, they reduce glare.

Clear Lenses Provide Maximum Light

Clear Lenses Provide Maximum Light

Clear lenses don't block out any light, so they will allow as much light as possible to reach your eyes. This type of goggles is great for indoor swimming or low-light locations and overcast conditions.

Mirrored and Smoke Lenses Protect from Glare and Harsh Light

Mirrored and Smoke Lenses Protect from Glare and Harsh Light

If you find yourself always being blinded by bright light while swimming, mirrored lens are perfect for you because they reduce glare and brightness. They are especially great for swimming backstroke, open water swimming, or competitive swimming.

Another option for outdoor swimming or extra bright indoor settings is smoke lenses or other lenses with a dark tint that will provide a view with reduced brightness.

Keep in mind that these lenses are not ideal for locations with less light because they will dim your surroundings and obscure your vision. Also be warned that lenses with a dark tint will get darker over time.

Violet and Blue Lenses are Perfect for Kids

Violet and Blue Lenses are Perfect for Kids

Blue lenses are a happy medium, giving you clear vision by both letting some light in and blocking glare. Blue lenses or violet lenses, which reduce glare in sunny conditions, might be a good choice for children swimming in pools.

Polarized Lenses Block Intense Glare

Polarized Lenses Block Intense Glare

Polarized lenses provide the best protection against glare by filtering out the light reflected off flat surfaces. These glare-minimizing goggles are especially good for you if you swim in open water, do triathlons, or swim at a brightly lit pool.

3

Look for Anti-Fog Lenses to Keep Your Vision Clear

Look for Anti-Fog Lenses to Keep Your Vision Clear

Goggles get foggy because the temperature of the water differs from your body temperature, which only increases as you keep swimming. This results in condensation gathering inside your goggles.

There are goggles that have anti-fog coating to mitigate the fogginess.  Unfortunately, the coating wears off over periods of consistent use, so eventually your goggles will start fogging up again. However, there are some hacks that help reduce fogginess, such as anti-fog spray, spit, shampoo, and shaving cream.

To preserve the coating as long as possible, do not touch the inside of the lens or else the anti-fog coating will wear off faster and you may scratch the lens. Rinse your goggles with fresh water after use. To avoid mold, make sure your goggles are completely dry before storing them, but don't dry them with a towel or cloth because that could cause scratches.

Don't leave your goggles out in sunlight. For maximum protection and longevity, consider storing them in a pouch

4

Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays

Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays

UV rays from direct sunlight and light reflecting off water can cause damage to your eyes and lead to long-term vision issues. You're going to want goggles that are 100 percent UV protective.

Dark lenses are not enough to protect you from harmful UV rays. Your goggles must be treated with UV protective coating to effectively block UV rays.

5

Consider Prescription Lenses

Consider Prescription Lenses

It is not recommended that you swim with your contact lenses. Different bodies of water may contain pathogens such as bacteria and viruses or chemicals. If you swim in contacts with no protection, you are at risk of eye infection, irritation, and inflammation as well as damage to your eye, such as corneal ulcers or scratches.

Goggles are a great solution because they will prevent your contacts from trapping pathogens in your eyes. There are even prescription swimming goggles that allow you to see clearly without having to worry about wearing contacts.

If you're nearsighted or have myopic vision, look for goggles that have lenses with the correct power or "diopter" strength so you can see clearly underwater. For you, the diopter will be a negative number between -1.5 and -10.

To do this, you'll need your current vision prescription and a formula. Paying attention to positive and negative signs, take one-half of the cylinder number and add it to the negative sphere number. Then down to find the diopter strength closest to your prescription.

If you're farsighted or your eyes have different prescriptions, don't worry! There are vendors that sell lenses with positive diopters, bifocal lenses, or separate prescription lenses you can insert into goggles.

6

Check for Assembly Requirements

Check for Assembly Requirements

It is important to double-check if there is any assembly required when buying a new pair of swimming goggles. Some goggles arrive completely assembled and ready to put on for a swim!

Other goggles may require some assembly, such as connecting the straps separated or attaching the nose piece. Make sure the goggles come with easy-to-follow assembly instructions. Also, keep in mind that kids might need help assembling their goggles.

Be sure to read the manufacturer's directions for proper care so your goggles last as long as possible without scratching, molding, or getting foggy.

A few reviewers complained that these goggles left deep marks around their eyes. A few others reported that air bubbles got trapped in the lip around the lenses, obscuring their vision.
