Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Elleair's "Use It For Shower Toilets" Toilet Paper from Daio Paper is double-ply, embossed, and each roll is 23 meters. It absorbs water well and holds its strength (which it should, based on the name).

But we found the texture to be like paper towels: hard, sturdy, and thick. Because of this, it's not flexible enough to get reach all places and wipe cleanly.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Nepia's Nepi Nepi (double-ply, 25 meters, unscented) is thick and fluffy and feels nice. It held together well in our water test. We had a sense of security because it seems sturdy. So why didn't it rank higher? We just think it's overpriced for everyday use.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Kleenex Double-Ply (45 meters) from Japan Paper Crecia wipes really well. It doesn't break or twist no matter how hard you rub. It got a perfect score in our wiping strength test. But it's incredibly weak when it comes to water and just disintegrated.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Kleenex Single-Ply 60 Meters, also Japan Paper Crecia, was pretty strong for a single-ply, and performed much better than their double in our wet strength test. It's very sturdy and strong. However, the texture is rough, and it feels like it takes all the moisture out of your skin.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Nepia Premium Soft (single-ply, 60 meters, soap-scented) is just not great overall. The paper is thin and brittle, leading some to say it was irritating and felt like gauze. It also doesn't wipe well, either urine of feces.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Elleair Odor-Eliminating Plus (double-ply, 37.5 meters, fresh clear scent) is very soft and comfortable, but weak, and fell apart too easily in our wet strength test. Some of us also thought the fragrance was too strong.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Askul Toilet Paper (single-ply, 120 meters) is not embossed, but made from 100% recycled pulp. It was hardly absorbent at all. It fell apart almost as soon as it got wet, and our hands got wet. It's cheap, though.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Nepia Oshiri Celeb (double-ply, 35 meters, unscented) feels so soft and nice on the skin, because it has moisturizing ingredients. But after that, it has no redeeming features, falling apart in both of our wiping tests. It's just too soft to use.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Coreless Toilet Paper from Kilat (single-ply, 150 meters) basically dissolves as soon as it gets wet. It might be good for public restrooms because there's no trash left behind by a roll core, but it's not nice to use.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

Elleair Flower Print from Daio Paper (doubly-ply, 25 meters, elegant flower scent) is a losing combination of high price and poor performance. We just can't find any reason to use it.

How We Tested the Toilet Papers

How We Tested the Toilet Papers

We put each toilet paper through tests to check for the following:

  1. Does it feel nice and soft on the skin?
  2. Is it strong when it gets wet?
  3. Can it wipe powerfully and cleanly?
  4. How much does it cost per use?

We scored the products on a 5-point scale.

Test ① Does it Feel Soft?

Test ① Does it Feel Soft?

This test was pretty straightforward. Six members of our editorial department rubbed the toilet paper against their skin to check how soft it felt.

We Discovered That Recycled Paper is Itchier

We Discovered That Recycled Paper is Itchier

Toilet paper that is made from recycled pulp often has a rough, scratchy texture that wasn't comfortable to use after just one or two rubs on our arms.

So we can imagine how it will feel in more sensitive areas. It may be better for the environment, but not for our skin. We recommend using 100% pulp toilet paper.

Test ② Is it Strong When it Gets Wet?

Test ② Is it Strong When it Gets Wet?

To see how well each paper could deal with urine, we used a half-tablespoon of water, dripped it onto artificial skin, and wiped it with 32 inches of toilet paper (we judged this to be the average amount a person uses).

Test ② Is it Strong When it Gets Wet?

We kept wiping until the water was gone or the paper couldn't absorb any more.

We Were Impressed if it Didn't Tear or Produce Little Balls of Paper

We Were Impressed if it Didn't Tear or Produce Little Balls of Paper

For obvious reasons, we didn't like papers that tore easily when they got wet, or crumbled into those tiny rolled-up balls that get stuck you-know-where. We found that slick, stiff toilet papers tended to be stronger than soft ones, which is a shame.

We Were Impressed if it Didn't Tear or Produce Little Balls of Paper

But it's better to avoid something that's so soft it falls apart easily, since it may feel nice when you wipe but will be uncomfortable later.

Test ③ How Well Does it Wipe?

Test ③ How Well Does it Wipe?

Again assuming that an average amount of paper used is 32 inches, we applied a spoonful of artificial stool to artificial skin, and tried to wipe it off.

Test ③ How Well Does it Wipe?

We checked how easily we could wipe, and whether there was any fake poo left on the fake skin or not.

Embossing is Key for a Clean Wipe

Embossing is Key for a Clean Wipe

We found that embossed toilet papers performed very well in this test. The uneven surface texture catches the stool, and it only takes one or two wipes to get clean.

On the other hand, unembossed papers spread the fake poop around and took more wipes to remove it all. This means you need to wipe more each time, which will be harder on your skin.

Test ④ Is it a Good Value or Overpriced?

Test ④ Is it a Good Value or Overpriced?

We also wanted to consider price per use. Keeping in mind that prices vary depending on where you buy and when, we've provided you with some general tips about each product's cost-performance.

Single-Ply is a Lot Cheaper Than Double-Ply

Single-Ply is a Lot Cheaper Than Double-Ply

In fact, single-ply toilet papers on average cost two and a half times less than double-ply! If you only look at the cost each use, that's not so much, but when you think about your yearly budget for a product you use every day, obviously that adds up. Take a look at our rankings to see which single-ply papers had the best performance.

How to Choose a Toilet Paper - Buying Guide

We recommend considering three points before buying your next roll of TP.

Decide if Single- or Double-Ply is Better for You

They both have their place - let's look at why you'd choose one and not the other.

Single-Ply is Better for Saving Money

Single-Ply is Better for Saving Money

According to a survey by the Japan Federation of Household Paper Industry Associations, the average person uses 35 inches of single-ply toilet paper for urine, and 26 inches of double-ply. For stool, people use 70 and 57 inches respectively. So you can see that people don't use double the paper when they use single-ply.

This means that a roll of single-ply simply lasts longer. Single-ply rolls are often twice as long as double from the same manufacturer, so it's just a better deal. Then, why use double at all?

Double-Ply is More Comfortable

Double-Ply is More Comfortable

Well, double-ply does have advantages. It absorbs water better, is thick and durable, and will be less likely to let your hands get wet.

Because it's two layered sheets of paper, it's also softer and feels nicer. So even though it's more expensive in the long run, you may prefer it during hard times.

Choose a Paper That Feels Nice

This seems pretty obvious, but let's look at the differences, and how to choose a toilet paper when you can't open the package and touch it!

100% Pulp is High Quality

100% Pulp is High Quality

Products that say 100% pulp, 100% virgin pulp, 100% fresh pulp, or 100% pure pulp are made from wood pulp without any recycled paper added. They are definitely softer.

Products with recycled paper are rougher because the wood fibers have been damaged during the processing of reusing the original paper product. Anything that says used paper, recycled pulp, or recycled paper is likely to feel rough.

Choose Embossed Papers for Softness

Choose Embossed Papers for Softness

The uneven texture of embossed toilet paper acts as a cushion, giving it a soft feel. As we saw in our tests, it also helps wipe cleanly. Because it increases the surface area, it improves water absorption, too.

Some Toilet Papers Have Moisturizers Added for Delicate Skin

Some Toilet Papers Have Moisturizers Added for Delicate Skin

If you have sensitive skin or a habit of wiping frequently, look for one with moisturizers added. Ingredients such as squalane or  baby oil can provide a comfortable, non-irritating feeling.

Look for Long Rolls to Save Space and Time

Look for Long Rolls to Save Space and Time

Some products are labeled as "long-winding," "compact," "1.5 times longer," or something similar. This means they have more sheets per roll than a standard roll

The exact number will depend on the manufacturer, but looking for this kind of label will mean less-frequent roll replacement, and more storage space, because you'll need fewer in your cabinet.

Coreless Types Reduce Waste

Coreless Types Reduce Waste

This type of toilet paper has no cardboard core in the center, so you use the whole roll and then it's gone. It's convenient and clean. However, some require a special kind of holder, so make sure yours is compatible first.
