The Benefits of Using E-readers

The Benefits of Using E-readers

If the idea of purchasing an e-reader sparks your interest but you're unsure whether or not you need one, then hopefully this section will give you some good reasons why an e-reader can bring joy to your reading life!

Read Millions of Books with Only One Device

Read Millions of Books with Only One Device

An e-reader can be considered a moving library. Depending on the memory storage of your device, you can store thousands--or even millions--of books in a device that can easily fit in your bag. You can read whatever book you want at any time and anywhere.

Besides, you'll never lose track of your book. No matter how absent-minded you are, you can always find your current read with just a few clicks.

An e-reader also saves you from the hassle of having to wait for your book to be shipped and arrive or going to the bookstore. You can just pay online, and the book you want to read will be ready after a few seconds of downloading! Newly published books are also no exception.

It's Friendly on Your Eyes

It's Friendly on Your Eyes

Nowadays, many e-readers are designed with e-ink technology that allows the screen to reflect light just like paper does. This display uses individually charged black and white spheres, giving it an appearance similar to paper. The screens also require little energy.

The blue light from laptop or smartphones is the reason why your eyes may feel so strained or tired. But with the e-ink screen technology, there won't be any blue light emitted from your device, making it easy on your eyes whether outside or under direct sunlight.

It's Friendly on Your Eyes

There are some disadvantages to e-ink technology however. E-ink display is most often black and white, and it can't show moving images like videos. And though e-ink display doesn't have back lighting, many products are equipped with a back light that can help you read even in the dark.

Focus on Reading with Less Distraction

Focus on Reading with Less Distraction

Some consumers think that because you can read on personal laptops, smartphones, or tablets, why would you spend money on an e-reader? However, an e-reader could protect you from the temptation of playing games, browsing the internet, or other distracting activities.

Of course, e-readers can still connect to the Internet and some can even run applications. However, the processing speed of e-readers is much slower than smartphones, and many apps are not available on e-readers. If you love reading books but the availability of other apps distracts you, why not invest in an e-reader?

How to Choose an E-reader - Buying Guide

How to Choose an E-reader - Buying Guide

After realizing the benefits of e-readers, you probably wonder what product would meet your needs the most. With this buying guide, we lay out some criteria that you may want to look at when choosing to buy an e-reader.

Pay Attention to the Operating System

Pay Attention to the Operating System

E-readers can be divided into 2 types based on their operating system: open-source like Android and closed-source, developed by the manufacturer itself.

Closed-sourced operating systems such as Kobo and Amazon Kindle often are less customizable and have fewer functions. However, they have great stability and speed. Devices using Android such as Boox or Bibox offer plenty of functions for users, but may respond more slowly if used for a long time.

There are also differences between libraries. Some Android devices may not be able to get access to Kindle's library. However, many Android devices allow you to use the OverDrive app, meaning you can easily borrow books from public libraries that use that system.

Consider Different Features of E-readers

Consider Different Features of E-readers

Even though an e-reader is designed like a paper book, it still contains various functions of an electronic device. Some e-readers allow users to take notes, search for images, or create diagrams. Others can also play audio. Based on what functions you want your e-reader to have, you can choose the product accordingly.

If You're a Fan of Comics or Illustrated Books, Choose a Device With a Lot of Storage

If You're a Fan of Comics or Illustrated Books, Choose a Device With a Lot of Storage

Unlike a personal computer which is equipped with a hard drive, e-readers often have flash memory with average storage capacity of 4GB. The size of a black and white novel without any pictures is about 1MB, so this is usually enough.

However, if you are a fan of comics or illustrated books, 4GB won't cut it. Depending on how any pages have images and color, the size can be hundreds of megabytes. In this case, you should choose a device with a large storage capacity.

However, some brands offer free cloud storage service that allows you to access your books at anytime without having to download them on your device. The larger the storage capacity, the more expensive the device is. So you should consider cloud storage if you want to save money.

If You Like to Read Near Water, Choose a Water-Resistant Product

If You Like to Read Near Water, Choose a Water-Resistant Product

If you like to read books while in the bathtub or in the pool as a way of relaxation, or if you simply are scared of water ruining your electronics, you should choose a water-resistant e-reader.

The waterproofing is identified by an IP rating. Each number from 1 to 8 corresponds to a different water-resistant level. The higher the number, the more water resistant your device is.

If your device is IP5 or above, you can use it in the bathroom or wet areas. IP6 will keep your device safe if it gets splashed. IP7 and 8 devices can handle actually being submerged for some period of time.

Choose a Product Based on Size and Weight

Choose a Product Based on Size and Weight

E-readers also vary in size and weight. One of the tiniest models is the Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350 with a 5-inch touch screen and a weight of merely 5.5 oz.

However, there are also larger models such as the Kindle DX. The screen size is 9.7 inches and the weight is 17 ounces, which may  feel heavy after a while. So it really depends on how much weight you want to carry around and how big a screen you want to have.

Keep in mind that you can always adjust the size of the text in e-readers. A smaller device does not mean that your font size will stay small as well.

After you finish your book, how about some other fun activities? Check out these great ways to enjoy your free time!

Summary

Have you found a good e-reader for yourself? Whether you are an avid reader or not, do not overlook an e-reader since it can be of great assistance in your daily life. We hope that this article can help you choose the most suitable e-reader that can spark joy in your life!
