Lucky for you, our editors searched Japanese e-commerce sites like Rakuten and Amazon for the bestselling filtered water pitchers and put them to the test.
We worked alongside 3 water specialists and examined each product for the following 4 points.
So, just which ones will stand out above the rest? Check this guide for the answers before buying!

Table of Contents
Filtered water pitchers provide safe and delicious water you can get straight from your own refrigerator any time you want. No wonder it's such a popular product.
A lot of different water pitchers are sold from a number of different brands, both domestic as well as foreign, so just what criteria should you base your decisions off of? Here are four points we would like you to consider when purchasing your next filtered water pitcher.
We're sure the number one thing on your list of criteria is taste. The difference in taste depends on how good the filter is.
The more impurities the filter is able to remove from your tap water, the clearer and more delicious your water will be. If you're not careful about how you fill up your pitcher from the tap, you might find that your water tastes a bit like your filter.
Each maker uses a different filter and each one differs in filtering ability. We've experienced ones that are able to remove all 13 impurities restricted by law in Japan, as well as those that only get rid of chlorine and mold. It's important to choose a water pitcher with a filter capable of removing the highest number of impurities.
Also, if you have a pitcher that adds calcium carbonate to your water, your water will be rather alkaline, making it better suited for cooking better-tasting rice. However, since calcium in your water could throw off the balance of taste, we don't recommend it for drinking.
Since these pitchers are something we use every day, it's important to choose one that's easy to use and a size that fits your needs as well as your refrigerator.
Make sure you find one that fits inside the door pocket of your refrigerator or on one of the shelves. With a larger pot, you'll be able to filter more water at one time, but if it takes up too much space it might be a hassle to continuously take it out and put it back in.
So before deciding, take into consideration how much water you'll be needing by thinking about what you'll be using it for as well as how many people are in your household. If you'll be using it for cooking, think about getting a larger one which can hold a lot more water at one time.
Filtering your water takes longer the more impurities your water has. There are water filters that take over 10 minutes to filter just one liter of water as well as those whose bodies are so small, you're forced to fill it up over and over again.
We recommend taking note of these features when buying. Think about how much filtered water you'll be needing on a daily basis and buy a filtered water pitcher that best suits your needs.
You'll need to continuously change filters in your water pitcher and each maker's product requires you to change them at different times. If you don't, it becomes rather unsanitary and will affect the taste of your water.
Also, what you need to consider is that, no matter what maker's product you use, these products are supposed to be used on a daily basis. Some will say that the filtration system will work just as it would the day you bought it even if it's not used for a couple of days.
Others will suggest changing the filter if it hasn't been used for over 2 weeks. Make sure you read the instructions of your filtered water pitcher carefully to get the most out of your filter.

Coming in 1st and rated the highest by our 3 water specialists is TORAY's Torayvino Filtered Water Pitcher! It gave our tap water a mild yet sharp taste, very much like that of natural spring water. This highly-rated filtered water pitcher is recommended for water connoisseurs.
Also, its quick filtration time makes everything stress-free. And with a great cost performance, you can continue using it day in and day out without worrying about it breaking the bank.
This filtered water pitcher not only delivers incredible filtration speed, but also amazing cost performance. Since water is used every day for drinking as well as cooking and getting clean, delicious water as quickly as possible at such a low running cost makes this pitcher a great choice! We also enjoyed the sleek design of the handle.
Also, we found that it filters out all the unpleasant tastes of the tap water without any hint of taste from the filter itself. Highly recommended by our specialists!
Since this filtered water pitcher was designed for using the water for cooking, the mild taste of the water would be perfect to use for not only cooking rice, but also for any dish you wish to make. And since it has a great cost performance, you can use it for anything without worrying about money!
Since it takes over 9 minutes to filter 1 liter of water, we recommend this pitcher for those of you who are not in a rush to get their water.
The water from this pitcher was rather good yet there was a hint of chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) left behind from the filter, causing it to lose points in the taste category.
Cost performance is decent making it an overall nice product. The slim body makes it easy to hold while not taking up too much space in your fridge.
We can't say with confidence that the water from this filtered water pitcher is delicious, but the overall taste isn't that bad and doesn't give you that strong aftertaste present in other filters.
We wouldn't recommend this product for people worried about cost performance, especially considering the taste. The filtering area can't be removed, making it difficult to wash completely. When washing, be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any dish detergent residue.
You can taste a hint of added calcium in the water after it's filtered, giving it an almost artificial taste. There's not a lot of chlorine taste, but it didn't fare well in the taste category at all.
We also didn't particularly like the act that it takes over 10 minutes to filter just a liter of water. It would be hard to use for cooking or even drinking.
The taste was moderately alright with little to no odor, yet nothing we could rate very high. Since the pitcher comes with a flip top, you can easily pour your water using only one hand.
Filtration time and cost performance are both in the gray area but it's great for those who find themselves busy in the kitchen with only a single hand to spare.
Although we found the water had a good balance of taste to it, the aftertaste had a hint of chlorine to it. Its cost performance is also less than desirable, landing it a low score overall. It's not something we could confidently recommend to anyone.
One good point about it was the fact that it filters water at a rate of about 3.5 minutes per liter.
This filtered water pitcher does, in fact, remove chlorine found in one's tap water as well as has a good balance in terms of taste. But, with a single filter going for around $62.00, it would be hard to continue using it without paying an arm and a leg.
This water filter proved good at removing any chlorine and other foreign properties from our tap water. But all that aside, it takes over 7 minutes to filter a liter of water, so it's not recommended for those wishing to use their filtered water quickly, whether for cooking or simply for drinking.
We purchased the top 10 best-selling Japanese filtered water pitchers from Japanese websites like Amazon and Rakuten and put them to the test!
We tested each product for the following 4 points:
①: Taste after filtration
②: Ease of use
③: Filtration time
④: Running cost
First, we tested to see the change in taste after filtering the water using each pitcher and rated each one according to the preferred taste of our water specialists.
We had our specialists compare each filtered water with regular tap water to see which ones had the softest, most pleasing taste and rated each one between A+ and D.
The one that was believed to transform regular, plain tap water into almost natural spring water was the Torayvino Filtered Water Pitcher 1.1 L PT302.
The filtered water had a clear and sharp taste with a good balance. We wouldn't recommend it for only cooking or for use making tea or coffee, but found it so delicious it could be drunk everyday.
Next, we tested each filtered water pitcher for how easy they were to use.
Since these water pitchers become a part of everyday life and used quite often, being able to use it stress-free is most important. We tested each water pitcher for the following points.
Criteria for Testing Ease of Use
We found quite a difference in how easy it was to fill each pitcher depending on their shape. There are some pitchers in which you have to remove the entire lid in order to fill it, ones with a flip top in which you could hold open with your thumb, and ones that opened up automatically under the pressure of the water.
The ones whose lids need to be completely removed before filling were the most inconvenient and difficult to use. On the other hand, the others that could be easily operated using one hand were found to be the most convenient. We recommend that style over the other.
Next, we tested each pitcher for how long it took to filter approximately a liter of water.
We timed each pitcher from when we filled it with water until the water was completely filtered, took the average time, and ranked each one between A+ and D.
A number of pitchers took an average of 3 minutes to fully filter 1.05 qt. of water but only one was able to do it in under a minute and that was JETERY's Filtered Water Pitcher 1.8 L Stylish.
And not only did it filter the water in a mind-blowing 44 seconds, it was able to rid the tap water of any unpleasant taste without leaving the taste of the filter itself behind!
Lastly, we examined the running cost for each liter of water filtered. We took the cost of replacing each pitcher's filter and divided it by how much water it can filter to come up with a precise cost of how much each liter would cost. We then took the average and compared each pitcher to it, ranking them between A+ and D.
We found that the major brand, Toray, provided the most cost-effective running cost among everything we tested. Each running cost changes depending on the kind of filter the pitcher uses but the Cleansui pitchers came in at about 0.077 cents per liter. T
oray's Torayvino and IRIS OHYAMA's filtered water pitcher both ranked in at about 0.12 cents per liter. As you can see from the results, there's quite a difference in cost between each product so we ask that you keep this in mind when purchasing your filtered water pitcher.
Once your tap water has passed through your filter make sure to then store it in your refrigerator. Keeping it at room temperature runs the risk of growing mold or other bacteria. Although, some maker's products allow you to store your water at room temperature, so be sure to check the instructions before buying one.
If there happens to be no space in your refrigerator for your filtered water pitcher to stand up, consider buying one capable of being laid on its side or one that's not so tall. Checking the space in your refrigerator before buying is highly recommended to avoid regretting your purchase.
