Sheet face masks are great, but not all of them will give them the hydration you're looking for. Some are better for acne, some are better for anti-aging, and some are better for soothing. If moisture is what you're after, then we've got the list for you. We collected the 10 best sheet face masks for hydration on the Internet and compiled them into a carefully-researched list.
With its ultra-hydrating formula for all skin types, Facetory's Moon Velvet Moisturizing Cream Mask took the number one spot on our list. In order to choose the right sheet mask to hydrate your face, you need to consider the ingredients and materials that have the best effect on your skin type. Take a look below for more in-depth information on how ingredients can really make a difference in the quality of masks!
Some sheet masks have a ton of ingredients while some only have a few. In any case, the key to hydrating masks is to look for some key ingredients that we'll list below.
Humectants are substances that can draw much-needed moisture to the top layers of skin, which is the key to hydration. Hyaluronic acid is one such humectant, and it helps to treat and prevent dehydration commonly caused by stress or pollution. It's also well-tolerated by all skin types, whether it's oily, acne-prone, dry, or sensitive.
Sodium hyaluronate is another humectant, and it also has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness and soothe the skin. Glycerin is another common humectant that can be found in many skincare products, including sheet masks.
Hyaluronic acid is a great ingredient to look for in a mask if you have dry skin as it can provide hydration. However, if you overuse this ingredient, it can eventually dry out the skin because it draws all the water to the top layer of the skin.
There's no need to stop using it, but just consider using a creamy or emollient-based moisturizer after your mask. If you have dry or sensitive skin or are prone to rosacea, then avoid sheet masks with alcohol as an ingredient.
Within the world of humectants, some go well beyond just moisturizing. Beta glucan is one such ingredient. Often compared to hyaluronic acid, beta glucan is a naturally derived ingredient that can soothe irritation in addition to hydrating. It can also reduce visible signs of aging and help restore the skin barrier so that you can retain all of that good hydration.
One powerhouse humectant particular to Korean skincare is snail mucin, or snail slime. It's a gentle hydrator that actually contains hyaluronic acid, along with other helpful moisturizers and gentle exfoliants like glycolic acid. So if you see this on a Korean sheet mask, don't run away - run towards it!
There are various materials used to make face masks and each comes with its own pros and cons. Cotton, for example, is a hypoallergenic material that is also biodegradable, which makes it an environmentally friendly choice. There are also certified organic choices that can put less strain on the environment as well.
Biocellulose masks are made of synthetic fibers and have a jelly-like consistency. They can hold a lot of water and hydrating ingredients with no problem and are ideal for very dry skin.
Tencel is obtained from eucalyptus pulp and has a soft and gentle texture ideal for sensitive skin. Another material that those with sensitive skin should consider is bamboo fiber. It's soft, gentle on the skin, and can adhere securely to your skin. The thin texture also helps all the nourishing ingredients absorb quickly into your skin.
Hydrogel sheet masks combine the best of the regular sheet mask and gel mask technology. This essence of water-like material is completely water-soluble and can be washed off after use, making it almost zero waste.
Biocellulose masks are great as a post-procedure treatment. They're very gentle and don't stick to the skin when removed. These can usually be used after laser resurfacing treatments because they can be quite soothing to healing skin.
Chances are that you're looking for a mask that can do more than just hydrate, so here are some additional benefits to look for when sheet mask shopping.
Vitamin C is your answer to spots and discoloration. This ingredient helps restore radiance and glow while reducing age-related pigmentation and offering a more even skin tone.
Niacinamide or ceramides are water-based ingredients that are part of the B3 vitamin group. They're ideal for people in their mid-30s and they help to increase elasticity and fight the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.
Retinol, another beneficial ingredient, stimulates the production of new cells. It also fights skin problems caused by hormonal changes like acne and hyper-pigmentation and keeps skin looking young and fresh.
If you have melasma, a sheet mask with Vitamin C can help with the discoloration by brightening the skin. Retinol-based masks can help fine lines and wrinkles, but using this type of mask often can cause skin drying. A retinol based skin mask can be used two to four times a week depending on your skin type. Niacinamide is a great ingredient to look for if you have acne or rosacea at it can help clam inflamed skin and redness.
Bamboo helps rebuild vital cell nutrients. It possesses high levels of naturally-occurring silica, a big component of collagen where this property of bamboo stems from. Bamboo keeps your skin young, firm, and free of wrinkles and is also a humectant.
Blueberry prevents skin cell damage caused by lifestyle and environmental factors. It's one of the richest sources of antioxidants and is a remedy for broken capillaries, scars that need healing, and premature aging. Pomegranate is another fruit with similar benefits.
Papaya is an ingredient that has more than one benefit. It works as a de-tan agent that helps with skin complexion while also being moisturizing. Regular use infuses skin with the enzyme papain that significantly speeds up the rate of virtually all of the chemical reactions that take place within skin cells. This also helps remove dead skin cells.
These all-natural ingredients definitely do have benefits for the skin, but those with sensitive skin, contact dermatitis or allergies should use these with caution as these ingredients can aggravate these conditions.
There is no golden rule for how often or how long to leave a sheet mask on, so you'll have to check the mask's instructions to get a good idea of how much time it will take. Some only require a quick five minutes a couple of times a week, but some can require 20 or 30 minutes of mask time.
Knowing how much time the mask takes to give its full benefits can help you decide where to fit it into your skincare routine, or if you can fit it into your skincare routine at all.
It's not recommended to do a sheet mask nightly. Two to four times a week is sufficient to get the benefits of the masks without overworking, over drying, or irritating your skin. Only leave a sheet mask on overnight if the mask is made for overnight use. This way you will not cause unnecessary dryness or irritation.

Face masks should never be reused. Even though sheet masks always seem to be covered in serum and you may think you can get more than one use out of them, don’t reuse them! You will be putting back all the impurities that leaked onto the mask back onto your skin. Avoid this at all costs.
If you feel like your face mask has too much serum on it, you can lightly squeeze the serum out while it’s still in the packet. Don’t try to remove the serum after you take it out of the package.
We also recommend you follow the instructions of your sheet face mask for the best results. Leaving your face mask on for longer than the time stipulated on the package might suck back the serum into the mask and away from your skin.
