Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Not Enough Removal Power

Not Enough Removal Power

The biggest issue we had, as you may have guessed, is that a lot of the lower-ranked products didn't have the removal power we were looking for. Daiso Non-acetone Nail Remover and Muji Nail Polish Remover scored fairly average on all fronts, but we had to use them several times to remove enamel completely.

Canmake Quick & Easy Remover actually was easy to use with its indented sides that allowed us to hold it easily, but we wished it was a bit more effective in the removal department. Loujene Non-acetone Enamel Remover is suited for people who only wear a bit of nail polish, but if you like to layer it on, you'll need something stronger.

If you have glitter on your nails or you're in a rush, then don't count on &nail Moisture Spa Remover; only use it if you have a lot of time on your hands.

Convenient but Impractical

Convenient but Impractical

An interesting issue we ran into was that even though we thought these containers and types of nail polish remover were super convenient to use, they didn't fully do their job.

ParaDo Sponge Remover uses a sponge to directly dispense nail polish remover, which cuts down on garbage, but it doesn't remove polish very well. And we thought media Nail Color Remover had a super easy-to-use and dispense container, but since it hardly removes color at all, we'd only suggest it in an emergency.

Rooro Nail Remover Sheet and Loujene Nail Polish Remover Sheet came in convenient sheet forms that didn't require you to use your own cotton, but you may need a few to get the job done.

Offensive Scents

Offensive Scents

Most of the products we tried out were pretty good in terms of not giving off a strong acetone smell, but these removers were the exception. ParaDo Nail Remover gets a lot of hype online for its quality, but we thought its acetone smell was a bit engulfing.

On the other hand, Ducato Non-acetone Nail Enamel Remover tried to mask its smell with a grapefruit fragrance, but it actually smelled a bit like paint thinner.

How We Tested the Nail Polish Removers

We put each of the removers through two tests; one measured its ability to remove enamel and the other gauged how easy it was to use.

Test ① Enamel Removal Ability

Test ① Enamel Removal Ability

First, we measured the most important factor: its enamel removal ability. We painted some nail chips with two layers of the same nail polish and looked at how much color came off with one application of polish removal.

Test ① Enamel Removal Ability

Our test results showed that acetone removed nail polish much more easily than those with natural oils. Products that didn't use acetone took a long time to remove color.

Test ② Ease of Use

Test ② Ease of Use

We also looked at how easy it was to use each product in terms of how easy it was to open and close, carry around, and dispense product.

Test ② Ease of Use

We really liked sheet-type removers because they don't require cotton and are easy to take on the go.

We judged bottle-type products to be convenient if they were only a couple inches wide in circumference, since thinner ones are generally easier to hold and carry. The opening for these bottles is usually small as well, which eliminates the risk of spillage and overuse.

How to Choose a Nail Polish Remover - Buying Guide

Here are three big things to look out for.

① Check Acetone Content and Moisturizing Ingredients

Nail polish removers come in two main types: acetone and non-acetone. Each have different characteristics that suit different situations.

Acetone Gets the Enamel Removal Job Done

Acetone Gets the Enamel Removal Job Done

If you like to layer on the polish or use enamel with tough-to-remove glitter, nail polish removers with acetone will remove it cleanly from your nails; and it only requires a small amount!

The downside to acetone is that it's not great for your skin and nails, especially in large amounts. It removes necessary moisture and oil required to keep you healthy. So if you're going to use a polish remover with acetone, have some dependable post-removal care on hand (like cuticle oils).

Acetone-free Removers are Gentler on Your Nails and Nose

Acetone-free Removers are Gentler on Your Nails and Nose

Acetone-free nail polish removers usually don't have the offensive smell of acetone-based removers, and they're a lot less likely to inflict damage on your nails.

The downside to acetone-free removers is that you need a lot of product and time to get the job done. They're also not great at removing many layers of polish or glitter. However, they're safer and gentler for your skin and nails, so if you don't wear a lot of polish or you have extra sensitive skin, consider an acetone-free product.

Moisturizers are Always an Added Bonus

Moisturizers are Always an Added Bonus

Moisturizing ingredients like jojoba oil, aloe vera extract, and camellia oil can help restore moisture to your nails lost in the enamel removal process.

Using a particularly damaging remover can cause cracked nails and hang nails, so even if it contains a lot of moisturizers, try to reduce the amount of time that the product stays on your nails as possible.

Choose a product based on whether you want to remove polish quickly with acetone or you want to be gentle on your nails with an acetone-free product.

② Choose a Container That Suits Your Lifestyle

Here, we'll talk about the pros and cons of the two most convenient types of nail polish remover: bottle types and sheet types.

Bottle Types Give You a Lot of Product for (Usually) Less Money

Bottle Types Give You a Lot of Product for (Usually) Less Money

We recommend bottle types to people who regularly wear enamel. You'll get a lot of product for not that much money, and there are a lot of options like acetone and acetone-free to choose from.

Sheet Types are Super Convenient and Portable

Sheet Types are Super Convenient and Portable

If you value convenience and portability in your products, we'd recommend sheet types. You don't need your own cotton, and you don't have to worry about having a lot of leftover product. They're also great for emergency enamel removal jobs.

③ Pick a Product with a Mild Aroma

③ Pick a Product with a Mild Aroma

We recommend nail polish removers with mild fragrances if you're sensitive to the normally strong scent of removers. They'll usually have this advertised on the label. Also, non-acetone types overall tend to have a gentler scent. Citrus and floral scents can make you feel more relaxed, too.

Tips on Removing Nail Polish Effectively

Here's how you can get the most out of your nail polish by using as little product as possible.

Let the Product Sit for 5 Seconds before Rubbing it off

Let the Product Sit for 5 Seconds before Rubbing it off

To get nail polish off your nails quickly and easily, we recommend soaking a cotton pad in remover and then letting it sit on your nail for 5 seconds. This helps the product melt and reduces the amount of damaging product that would have to be used on your nails for multiple applications.

For thick or tough manicures, you should wrap your nails in aluminum foil after placing the cotton pads on your nails and then let it soak for a couple of minutes. Since acetone can be pretty damaging after a while, we recommend using non-acetone removers for this method.

It's also a good idea to use a clean side of cotton every time rather than using the same side of a cotton pad multiple times. Using the same side of a cotton pad on multiple nails is basically like rubbing nail polish directly onto your skin. Since this isn't hygienic, I suggest using fresh cotton for every nail.

Apply Cuticle Oil before and after Use to Retain Moisture

Apply Cuticle Oil before and after Use to Retain Moisture

If you haven't invested in a good cuticle oil already, you should. We recommend applying a bit before and after the enamel removal process. The "after" part is especially important since nail polish removals can will also remove moisture and oil as well as enamel.

You should apply cuticle oil to every part possible--nail beds, under nails, and the sides--to give the nourishment that your nails need. We also think it's a good idea to finish off your routine with a good hand cream to seal in the moisture.

Since acetone is still on your skin even after you're done removing nail polish, you should wash your hands before applying cuticle oil. It also makes the area cleaner and more able to absorb the oil.

Safety Tips: Ventilate and Keep Away from Children

Safety Tips: Ventilate and Keep Away from Children

The most important thing to do when using nail polish remover is to ventilate. Removers with acetone are toxic and could cause poisoning or irritation to your lungs, so be careful of breathing it in.

You should also store the product out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental drinking. Also, acetone can have negative side effects on both you and your baby if you're pregnant, so we advise avoiding it.

Alternatives and Other Uses of Nail Polish Remover

Here are some alternatives to traditional nail polish remover as well as other things you can use your remover for.

What if I Don't Want to Use Nail Polish Remover?

What if I Don't Want to Use Nail Polish Remover?

If you want to avoid using nail polish remover at all costs, there are alternatives (albeit not as effective). Ethanol and alcohol used for disinfectant and cologne that has a high alcohol content can be used to remove enamel, but they're not very strong or time efficient.

Some say paint thinners can also be used, but since it's very possible to experience poisoning symptoms with use, we can't recommend them for removing nail polish.

What Else Can it Be Used for?

What Else Can it Be Used for?

It turns out that nail polish remover can be used for a lot of other things. Some alternative uses you may have heard of are using remover to take off stickers, erase ink stains, clean shoes, and scrub away water scaling. Just make sure you're not using them on materials like plastic, rubber, or leather, since it can change their color or damage them.

You can also use nail polish remover to revive oil-based ink that has dried out. If you put a couple of drops into the lid of an ink marker, close it, and wait a bit, then you'll be able to use the ink like new. It only works once, but it's a good trick to know in an emergency.
