If you have dry and brittle nails, cuticle oils can be a lifesaver. That's why our editors searched Japanese e-commerce sites (such as @cosme, Amazon, and Rakuten) for the best cuticle oils. We then chose the 16 most popular products and tested them.

We focused on three things: how easy it was to apply, how well it soaked into our nails, and its fragrance. We then compiled everything we learned into a buying guide about and list of the best Japanese cuticle oils available online.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Just Average

Just Average

We didn't necessarily think these products were bad, but we think there were plenty of other better products. Nail+Nail Oil Gel Treatment surprised us by not being tough like most cuticle gels are, and it had a pleasant floral scent. Country & Stream Honey Nail Treatment has a natural honey scent and blends into cuticles well with its gooey texture.

A Fragrance That Doesn't Fit Everyone

A Fragrance That Doesn't Fit Everyone

Most cuticle oils are scented, but not all of them will fit everyone's tastes. We thought Sakura Blanc Fragrance Care Oil had excellent blending properties, but the sakura scent was so sweet that it reminded us of a dessert.

Grown Care Cuticle Care Oil is a great product for those who have trouble maintaining brittle nails, but the distinct bergamot fragrance may be a turn-off for some. And while we thought &nail Nail Bed Oil was a perfectly good product in itself, it had a very herby-smelling lavender.

Hard to Use

Hard to Use

Urun Wrap Nail Serum wasn't a bad product at all, but since it's a tube type, it's easy to squeeze out too much product when a lot of pressure is applied - not the most cost efficient.

On the other hand, Fernanda Nail Treatment Maria Regale is a pen type--which are usually easy to use--but when paired with its stiff gel contents, we found it difficult to control how much product came out.

Not a Texture That We'd Recommend

Not a Texture That We'd Recommend

We absolutely loved the citrus scent of &nail Healing Gel Oil, but since it's a gel-type cuticle oil, it takes more time than we'd like to soak into your nail beds. If you have time to spare, it's fine, but we definitely wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for a quick nail fix.

Introducing the Expert Who Lent Us Their Knowledge

Introducing the Expert Who Lent Us Their Knowledge
Yukari Matsuya
<Beautiful Nail Creator>

She's the owner and head stylist at the natural nail salon "nailroom felicita".

She specializes in restoring and caring for nails that are damaged or a complex shape. She is also a lecturer on topics such as how to maintain healthy nails at home, how to use your nails, and the relation between nails and the body.

How We Tested the Cuticle Oils

We put each of the cuticle oils through a series of three tests. Two measured the oil's ease of application and blending while the final test gauged the quality of its fragrance.

Test ① Ease of Application

Test ① Ease of Application

First, we tested to see how easy it was to apply each cuticle oil. We looked into factors like how easy it is to carry the container around, how easy it is to adjust the amount that comes out, and how easy it was to use the applicator (if there was one).

Test ① Ease of Application

Our favorite products were tube-types with a pen tip. The pen is able to reach to your nail beds without causing damage, and they're super portable. They're great for both concentrated care and a little touch-up on the go.

Brush- and sponge-type cuticle oils usually have bulky containers, so we think they're better for home use.

Test ② Ease of Blending

Test ② Ease of Blending

Next, we measured how easily the oils blended into our skin. We applied each oil as if using it for a massage treatment to test its texture and blending properties.

Test ② Ease of Blending

Our test results showed that light-textured oils were easiest to blend into cuticles using a brush. On the other hand, tube-type gels work by sort of melting into your skin, so they take more time to blend.

Test ③ Fragrance

Test ③ Fragrance

Finally, we graded each cuticle oil on scent, both when first taken out of the bottle and after applying it to our nails.

Test ③ Fragrance

We thought sweet scents tended to be a bit overpowering, so we gave higher scores to oils with refreshing floral scents. These scents tend to be light, so they won't be too strong on their own and they won't overpower the scent of your hand cream.

How to Choose a Cuticle Oil - Buying Guide

Here are four big things to look out for.

① Check its Moisturizing Ingredients before Buying

① Check its Moisturizing Ingredients before Buying

You should start your search by looking for moisturizing oils that will prevent dryness and hangnails. You can find these in the form of plant-based oils like olive oil, squalane oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, camellia oil, almond oil, and more.

If you want even more moisture, keep an eye out for cuticle oils that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid and honey extract.

② Choose a Type and Container That Suits Your Lifestyle

Cuticle oils come in many shapes and types, but we're going to focus on the most common four: manicure, roll, pen, and dropper types.

Manicure Types are Easy to Apply

Manicure Types are Easy to Apply

We assume those who use cuticle oils have also painted their nails at some point, so you should be used to this brush-type. They're also convenient because the brush allows you to take out the perfect amount of product.

Roll Types are Great on the Go

Roll Types are Great on the Go

Roll-on types have a metal ball in the neck of the container that prevents product from spilling out. Unlike manicure oils, you can't adjust the amount that comes out to your liking, but the ball ensures you'll get the same amount every time.

They often come in tube form, so they're quite compact and portable.

Brush Types Can Be Used for Detailed Application

Brush Types Can Be Used for Detailed Application

Brush types are usually ether in a tube-shape form with a pen-shaped tip or something that has a brush tip. The end of either shape is thin, so you can provide more minute care to your nail beds. These are also fairly portable.

Apply Oil in a Flash with Dropper Types

Apply Oil in a Flash with Dropper Types

The final common type of cuticle oils is the dropper type. These allow you to apply product one drop at a time directly onto your nails, so they're great for applying when you're in a rush.

They take a bit to get used to at first and there's always a risk of dripping, though, so we'd recommend these for home use rather than when you're out and about.

Your fingers and nails touch a lot of things every day, so there's naturally bacteria on them. Dropper types are the most hygienic type of cuticle oil since they don't come into direct contact with your skin.

③ Look for a Texture of Oil That Blends Easily

③ Look for a Texture of Oil That Blends Easily

Cuticle oils normally come in either a light, moist, or gel texture. Light and smooth oils will blend into your skin the best. It's rare that they feel heavy and you can reapply throughout the day.

However, cuticle oils with a particularly moist or gel-like texture can be great for dry, winter months when your nails need extra care.

④ Go with a Scent That You Like

④ Go with a Scent That You Like

We might be stating the obvious here, but cuticle oils are ideally used on a daily basis. Smell matters. If you're shopping in person, you can usually find fragrance testers; if you're shopping online, however, you'll have to rely on labels and reviews.

You can also match the scent with your cuticle care situation. For instance, you could pick a lavender-scented oil if you want to use your nail care time to unwind, or you could choose a citrus scent to brighten up your busy day.

Cuticle Care Tips and Tricks

Here are the basics of how to keep your nails moisturized and properly trimmed.

How to Apply Cuticle Oil

How to Apply Cuticle Oil

Applying cuticle oil itself is easy; just put it on and let it soak in. If the surrounding shin looks dry and white, massage a little in there, too. The key is to seal in this care by following it up with a hand cream.

You'll obviously lose these benefits when you wash your hands, so you should first apply cuticle oil and then hand cream. It's also a good idea to make sure your hand soap contains moisturizing ingredients.

Yukari Matsuya
Beautiful Nail Creator
Yukari Matsuya

Cuticle oil should be applied daily. It doesn't have to be a set amount of times, but you should apply it whenever you start to feel your nails drying out.

If your hands are especially dry in winter or due to excessive hand washing, consider using face lotion on your hands as well. You could easily work it into your daily skincare in the morning and at night.

However, excessive stimulation of nail beds can cause inflammation, so you shouldn't be touching your nails too much - just enough to massage product in.

How to Maintain Your Nail Shape

How to Maintain Your Nail Shape

We recommend using an emery board to maintain the shape of your nails. Most people shorten their nails with nail clippers, but using this tool with thin or brittle nails can result in cracked or peeling nails.

If you're worried about the emery board experience being painful, start with gentle pressure. You can find emery boards for shaping nails by reading the label or looking for something with "180G" (grid) on the label.

The best way to use an emery board is at a slight slant of about 45 degrees. Also, taking too much off the sides can cause the shape of your nail itself to change or could potentially damage your skin.

Here's Some More Love for Your Hands

Here's Some More Love for Your Hands

Your nails are just a part of your very useful hands, so don't skimp on additional hand care.

Summary

We rounded up members of our editing department, purchased the 16 most popular Japanese cuticle oils, and tested them all.

We found that the best of the best oils come in a light and smooth texture, have a refreshing floral smell, and can be applied easy throughout the day. You're ultimately the best judge of your own tastes in terms of smell, but we hope we've given you an idea of where to start.

Dark circles are tricky. They don’t like to be hidden, and you often need a very specific kind of concealer to do the trick. You first have to remember that the skin around your eyes is very delicate, and there’s a lot of movement there when you smile, laugh, frown, or cry. Then there’s different types of dark circles–blue, black, and brown–each requiring its own shade of concealer. If Western brands aren’t cutting it for you (or if they are, but you’re living in Asia and need something cheaper), then try looking into the arsenal of Japanese and Korean concealers.
