Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Can't Handle Sweat

Can't Handle Sweat

Some of the primers we tested just couldn't stand up to sweat, which was a factor important enough to land these in the lower side of the ranking. Decorte AQ Moisturizing Essence Primer had a perfect finish, but its lack of durability means you'll have to constantly touch up throughout the day (and who has time for that?)

Paul & Joe Moisturizing Foundation Primer is as moisturizing as its name implies, but it literally melted away along with the test foundation when faced with sweat. Shiro Kagome Konbu Primer was another product with a perfect finish but no moisturizing ability or durability to speak of.

Not Enough Moisture

Not Enough Moisture

We appreciated how easy it was to apply Chifure Make-up base Cream, but it was hard to get past its slightly heavy texture and lack of moisturizing ability. And if you neglect your morning skin care routine before applying RMK Makeup Base, you'll probably find your skin drying out by the end of the day.

A Texture We Can't Get Past

A Texture We Can't Get Past

Majolica Majorca Milky Skin Mask actually had decent scores in everything but the finish department; it did nothing to tone up our skin and it took a long time to blend into it as well. And since it doesn't have any UV protection to speak of, it was one of the lowest-ranked products in our list.

Canmake Juicy Glow Skin Base took last place because it felt sticky well after application, wasn't durable or moisture, and didn't have a pleasant finish. We were especially taken aback by its steep price of $26.70 (2,900 yen).

How We Tested the Foundation Primers

We put each of the 14 primers through a series of four tests with the help of Fujiwara. One test rated its finish while two others measured its moisturizing ability and durability. The final test gauge how easy it was to apply.

Test ① Finish

Test ① Finish

First, we measured each primer's finish. Pro makeup artist Fujiwara applied each product to a model and used her professional opinion to rate each one.

Test ① Finish

Our tests showed that a good primer--especially for those with dry skin--gives skin a dewy finish to make it appear more moisturized. Most primers that do this will leave your skin feeling a bit sticky, but the best ones blended into skin with ease. So if you've got dry skin, look for a watery primer with a dewy finish.

If you have dry skin, a foundation that makes your skin look dewy and moisturized from the inside will make your skin look healthier. I'd recommend you use a primer that gives you this natural dewy look rather than one with a matte finish.

Also, primers that have just a touch of thickness will look give you a better finish than those that are like pure liquid.

Test ② Moisturizing Power

Test ② Moisturizing Power

The next thing we tested was how much moisture each primer would provide to our skin.

Test ② Moisturizing Power

To make the playing field even, we sliced up some sweet potatoes and applied the primer to each one. Then we left them out for 8 hours in an air-conditioned room. We checked them once at 4 hours and again at the 8-hour mark to see how much they dried out and whether or not their color changed.

Test ② Moisturizing Power

Our test results revealed that none of the primers were totally moisturizing, highlighting the need for pre-makeup skincare. However, the most moisturizing of the bunch shared a similar watery texture, so if moisture is your top priority, keep an eye out for them.

Test ③ Durability

Test ③ Durability

Then we tested to see how easily each primer would come off. We started by applying each primer to a section of synthetic skin.

Test ③ Durability

We then applied a layer of durable foundation over each primer.

Test ③ Durability

Finally, we sprayed a mixture of warm water and horse oil (fake sweat) on each primer to see which ones held up the best.

Test ③ Durability

Unfortunately, many of the primers were unable to pass the sweat test. Perhaps it's because they were made to be more moisturizing than the average primer.

The ones that came off with the least mess were those with a creamy texture. It may also have to do with how well each primer blended with our test foundation, but we think it's safe to say that creamy primers are more durable!

Test ④ Ease of Application

Test ④ Ease of Application

The last thing we tested the primers for is how easy they were to apply.

Test ④ Ease of Application

We applied a pearl-sized amount of each product to synthetic skin and gently wiped the primer across the skin with our ring fingers. Then we measured how long each streak went on for before it faded away.

Test ④ Ease of Application

Some primers spread as far as 3.5 inches while some barely made it to 1 inch. The products that went the farthest were primers that had a light and liquid-y texture.

However, that didn't mean cream-types were difficult to spread; most products had a light and smooth texture, probably because they're made specifically for dry skin.

How to Choose a Foundation Primer for Dry Skin - Buying Guide

Here are four big things to look out for.

① Look for a Primer with a Beautiful and Dewy Finish

① Look for a Primer with a Beautiful and Dewy Finish

When choosing a foundation primer, you should pick one that gives your skin a dewy glow while hiding blemishes. Primers for dry skin especially should be more on the liquid-y side of texture than the creamy side. These will make your skin feel and look more moisturized.

② Choose Something with a Lot of Moisturizing Power

② Choose Something with a Lot of Moisturizing Power

It's important to find something that will moisturize your skin and keep it moisturized. You can usually tell how long a primer will keep your skin feeling hydrated by its texture; if it's too light, it will probably give out halfway through the day.

Instead, you should pick something that feels, well, moist - but not so moist that it could cause skin irritation. Super moisturizing primers also tend to feel a tad sticky or heavy upon application, so if you want to avoid that sensation, look for primers with moisturizing ingredients like chamomile extract, argan oil, and rose hip oil.

③ Go with a Primer That Will Last All Day

③ Go with a Primer That Will Last All Day

If you're worried about delicate areas of your face such as the corners of your eyes and the area around your mouth drying out before the end of the day, find a durable primer.

Other factors such as pre-application skincare and how well it works with your foundation are also factors to consider, but your perfect primer should be made to last. If you still find yourself drying out, try changing your primer.

④ Find Something That is Soft and Easy to Spread

④ Find Something That is Soft and Easy to Spread

We've said it a hundred times by now, but those that suffer from dry skin should choose a soft and spreadable primer that's liquid-y or creamy. We keep stressing this because the last thing your dry skin needs is extra friction. That means you should avoid primers that are too light or too heavy, like gel types and mousse types.

Make Your Primer Last Longer with Oils

Make Your Primer Last Longer with Oils

Besides proper pre-application skincare, you can also make your makeup last longer with the help of oils. To do this, just dab some oil on the sponge you used to blend in your primer and tap it over the product. This will make your skin look more dewy and stay more moisturized throughout the day.

We recommend lighter oils like squalane or jojoba oil for this, since other oils like rose hip oil or horse oils tend to oxidize faster.

Summary

mybest looked at 14 of the most popular foundation primers for dry skin available online. We found that the best of the best primers had a watery texture, made our skin look dewy, and lasted all day. We can't stress the importance of reading customer reviews to know more about things like texture when shopping online; hopefully we've given you a good place to start.

Maybelline Snapscara is tubing mascara, meaning it comes off with water. Getting good tubing mascara is one of the best things you can do for your lashes (other than putting nothing on them at all, but we aren’t giving up our smokey eyes). Still, you can’t help but wonder whether the mascara will flake. If it’ll clump. If it’ll even volumize or elongate your lashes at all.Our editing department purchased Maybelline’s Snapscara and sought to answer the above questions. This is what we learned during testing.
