Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Average on All Fronts

Average on All Fronts

We didn't have much to complain about Orbis Natural Fit Cheek, but we couldn't find anything good enough to make us bump it further up our ranking. We thought the same about Chifure Powder Cheek, but it scored a bit lower than the Orbis blush due to its small and not-so-easy-to-use brush.

A Strange Finish

A Strange Finish

shu uemura's Glow On stood up to sweat and friction pretty well, but it didn't make an impression as a blush. It wasn't too bright or shiny, but it had a finish that we weren't too fond of. Cezanne Natural Cheek N was another case of a blush that didn't look too shiny or matte, but it just didn't look natural.

Comes off Too Easily

Comes off Too Easily

Unless most of your days are spent inactive in a relatively cool place, you'll want your blush to have at least a little resistance to friction and sweat.

Visee Foggy on Cheeks and Mimc Biomoisture Cheek were both very weak in the face of sweat and friction to the point where the color came off almost instantly. Aqua Organic Pressed Cheek gave us the same problem, but we think it's mostly because of the fact that it's organic.

Powder That Flies Away

Powder That Flies Away

It's not a pleasant thing to breathe in half of your powder blush and watch your money go down the drain because the powder keeps flying away. We found that the powder stuck around in the case of our Media Bright Up Cheek N, so you might want to steer clear if you're worried about a dirty case.

Coffret D'or Smile Up Cheeks N had a lot of flyaway powder when we applied it to our cheeks, but this may be solvable by using a different brush. Unfortunately, there's no hope for the hard-to-adjust pencil-like case of Maquillage True Cheek. Almost all of the powder flew away before we could apply it.

Equipment Trouble

Equipment Trouble

Majolica Majorca Puff de Cheek was difficult to use due to its unique casing; it came with a puff instead of a brush, meaning you can only apply it in circular motions or pats. This made it difficult to adjust how much we wanted to use and thus sent it towards the bottom of our ranking.

Stands Out Too Much

Stands Out Too Much

Even if you don't want a completely natural finish, most people want their blush to not give the impression "I'm wearing a lot of blush." Elegance Emotional Face gave our cheeks a bit too much color for our liking, designating a place rather low on our ranking.

Magienne Cheek Powder has a shiny and almost white finish that doesn't make it look too sophisticated, and Daiso's UR GLAM Cheek Blush gave us a cheaper look than we thought despite knowing it came from a 100 yen shop.

B.A. Colors Blush took the bottom spot in our ranking due to its difficult case, lack of durability, and we thought its distinct shade of pink wasn't suited for our testers' skin at all. Unless you know this shade will look good on you, we suggest staying away from it.

How We Tested the Powder Blushes

We put each of the 33 powder blushes through a series of 3 tests. One test measured its finish, while the other two gauged its durability and its ease of use. Each product was scored on a scale of 0.1 to 5.0 in each category and also given an overall score.

Test ① Finish

Test ① Finish

Hair and makeup artist Fujiwara applied each product to a model and gauged its texture, its color, and how natural it looked.

Test ① Finish

In our tests, we found that blushes with a fine powder looked smooth and high-quality without the applier needing much technique.

We also gave blushes with a bit of shine a higher score rather than those with a matte finish, since they made skin look more lively.

I recommend a contemporary look that has a bit of shine and makes your skin look more lively! You should always check to see if the blush blends into your skin and the color suits your complexion.

But if you're someone that is concerned about the appearance of your pores, I'd recommend staying away from blushes with glitter. It gets into your pores and can make them stand out more than usual.

Test ② Durability

Test ② Durability

Next, we checked to see how easily the blushes came off.

Test ② Durability

We applied each blush to synthetic skin, and then we dispensed a dropper of fake sweat (horse oil and water) onto each blush spot. Then, we dragged a tissue with a weight on it to see if it would rub off.

Test ② Durability

We were surprised at how durable most of the blushes were; unless you're someone that sweats a lot, you probably won't need to touch up your blush with most of the products we tested. However, we discovered that natural or organic blushes came off quite easily.

Test ③ How it Felt to Use

Test ③ How it Felt to Use

We asked five of our editing staff to rate how it felt to use each blush.

Test ③ How it Felt to Use

They tested to see how easily the powder scattered, how easy the brush was to use, how easy it was to open and close the case, and how portable it was. Their individual scores for each product were then averaged into a final score.

Test ③ How it Felt to Use

An overriding trend we noticed in our test is that department store cosmetics had powder that was quite loose and flew away easily. We solved that problem with most of the problematic products by using a different brush.

Test ③ How it Felt to Use

Cases that were too smooth had a chance of getting dirty easily with loose powder or fingerprints, so if you're worried about how your cosmetic cases look, you may want to watch out for that. We also noticed that the volume of soft brush strands often mattered more than the length or size of the brush. Try a few out to see what works for you.

How to Choose a Powder Blush - Buying Guide

Here are three big things to look out for.

① Look for a Color and Finish That Looks Natural on You

When applying powder blush, it's important to create as natural-looking of a finish as possible.

Make Sure It Will Blend With Your Skin Tone and Doesn't Stand Out Too Much

Make Sure It Will Blend With Your Skin Tone and Doesn't Stand Out Too Much

When it comes to powder blush, it's easy too apply too much or too little. You don't need to be a makeup expert, but you do need to know which shades will blend into your skin easily. Steer clear of blushes that have particularly vibrant color and that should make your search a bit easier.

Choose a Color That Fits Your Skin Tone and Style

Choose a Color That Fits Your Skin Tone and Style

Blushes come in all varieties of shades from pinks, to corals, to reds, and more. Each color is objectively more suited to certain skin tones, but you can also choose to ignore those rules if you want to create a certain look or style for yourself. Here's a rundown of what kind of image each color group gives off:

  • Reds: for lack of a better term, sexy. This would be good to use on dates or when you're feeling yourself.
  • Pinks: for a cute look. You can use pinks to make yourself look more endearing or to make your face the center of attention.
  • Oranges: for a healthy look. These are probably the shades best suited for casual makeup.
  • Purples: for a lively look. Use this to make your skin look less dull and more fair.

One Color for Beginners, Multiple Shades for Experts

One Color for Beginners, Multiple Shades for Experts

Blushes can come in a pack of one, two, three, or even more colors. If you want to keep your makeup simple or you're not used to using a lot of makeup, we'd suggest sticking to one or two shades per palette.

Palettes with lots of colors are great if you want to brush up (no pun intended) on your technique or want to make your makeup look a bit more three-dimensional

② Find a Blush That Stands up to Friction and Sweat

② Find a Blush That Stands up to Friction and Sweat

Powder blushes aren't exactly the most durable of makeups, but you'd like to avoid touch ups as much as possible, right? Along with looking for a powder blush that will moisturize your skin, look for one with powder that sticks to your skin as well. This often means that it will stand up to sweat and friction as well.

③ Gauge How Easy it is to Use: the Case, the Brush, the Powder, etc.

③ Gauge How Easy it is to Use: the Case, the Brush, the Powder, etc.

It's important to consider more than just the blush when browsing blush powders. How easily can you open and shut the case? Is the brush adequate, or do you need to use a different one? How much powder scatters in and out of the case?

If you're someone that often does makeup in a hurry, you'll want your routine to be as efficient as possible, so you may want to look for a product that won't create clouds of blush powder when you apply it to your face. It's hard to test things like this when you're just browsing online, so make sure to read the reviews and take everyone's experiences into account.

How to Apply Powder Blush and Make the Color Last Longer

Before you go, we thought we should share some tips on how to get the most out of your powder blush.

Apply Powder Blush after Base Makeup, but Not Directly

Apply Powder Blush after Base Makeup, but Not Directly

Your blush will look best if you apply it at the right time; this happens to be after you've finished applying all of your base makeup. This rules applies whether it's powder foundation or liquid foundation. If you apply blush before it's all finished, you won't get nearly as much color out of it as advertised.

Also, applying blush to your face directly with a brush makes it easy for you to apply too much product. To prevent this, we recommend patting the brush (with the powder on it, yes) with the palm of your hand or a tissue before applying it to your face. And, voila! The perfect amount.

Make the Color Last Longer by Using it Together with Cream Blush

Make the Color Last Longer by Using it Together with Cream Blush

If you constantly find your powder blush almost gone by the end of the day, we have a suggestion for you. If you add cream blush into your routine, we guarantee the color will last at least a bit longer than usual.

So, you should be applying your makeup in roughly this order:

If you're using powder foundation: foundation primer → cream blush → foundation → powder blush

If you're using liquid foundation: foundation primer → foundation → cream blush → powder blush

Cream blushes contain a fair amount of oil that helps both the powder and cream blushes meld to your skin, so they should last all day if combined together.

Can't Get Enough of Japanese Cosmetics? We Have Much, Much More

Our Japanese editors work hard to research and compare all of the best Japanese cosmetics so you don't have to. Here are some more suggestions of what we think you should try.

Summary

We rounded up our editors and a cosmetic expert, purchased the 33 most popular Japanese powder blushes, and tested them all.

We learned that the best of the best powder blushes have a bit of glitter to create a lively shine to your skin, come in a shade that suits your skin tone, and have a case and brush that are easy to use. We hope this has proven useful information in your search for the perfect powder blush.

Top 10 Best Japanese Hair Dyes in 2020 - Tried and True! (Kao Liese, Palty, and More)
Let’s get this straight–there’s no such thing as a “best” hair dye. Strictly speaking. Just like there’s no such thing as a “best” concealer or “best” mattress or “best” jacket because it all comes down to you. What kind of skin do you have? What kind of sleeping posture? Do you get cold easily? This time around, we ordered the 10 most popular hair dyes found in Japanese drugstores and on Japan’s e-commerce sites and compared the following:1. How vivid the color was2. How gentle on hair the dye was3. How long the color lastedHowever, we want you to keep in mind that the Japanese hair dyes we introduce were formulated with Japanese (naturally black, bleached Asian) hair in mind and are most effective on hair of a similar quality. If you’ve hair like that, great–you’ll probably find that it works better than your average box of CVS/Walgreens stuff, especially Liese Prettia Bubble Hair Color (our number one pick). If not, though, results may be a bit unexpected.

It’s easy to see excessive plastic use when we go food shopping, but one area we might not pay as much attention to is in our shaving habits. Think about it: whether you use disposable razors where you throw away the whole thing or cartridge razors where the disposable blades are encased in plastic, all that waste can really add up if you shave a few times a week.Luckily, all-metal, reusable razors are making a comeback, making it easy for you to get an eco-friendly shave. But it can be hard to figure out where to begin when you’re starting from scratch. In this guide, we’ll go over the major points to look for when buying an eco-friendly razor. Last time, we talked about toners. Now, we move on to the next step in the Japanese skincare routine: moisturizers and face lotions. Face lotions are important–they are, if you remember, the lid that seals your toner in. Top 23 Best Japanese Whitening Serums in 2020 - Tried and True! (Haku, SK-II, and More)
It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass. In the Western world, think "glow" or "dewy finish." In order to respond to that aesthetic, cosmetic companies–both drugstore and high-end–here have been coming out with scores of whitening serums, essences, and ampoules. As always, it’s difficult to tell what kind of skincare is effective and what isn’t.
