Top 44 Best Japanese Potato Chips to Buy Online 2020 - Tried and True!

Our editors searched Japanese e-commerce sites (such as Amazon, Rakuten, and Yahoo! Shopping) for the best potato chips. We then chose the 44 most popular products and tested them.

We focused on three things: the strength of its flavor, the texture of the potato, and how hard it was. Then our testers combined their thoughts and scores into a collective overall score of deliciousness.

Products That Didn't Make the Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Not Great, but Not Outstanding Either

Not Great, but Not Outstanding Either

While we weren't necessarily disappointed with Calbee's Soy Sauce and Mayo Potato Chips, we weren't blown away by them either. They'd be better eaten paired with a drink or another snack rather than be enjoyed on its own.

Considering how fancy the package for Koikeya Pride Potato's Lightly Salted chips looked, we expected an equally high-class flavor, but we just tasted average potato chips. And though we loved the texture of Family Mart's Wavy Thick-cut Salt Potato Chips, we couldn't find much else to rave about.

Unique Flavors That You'll Either Love or Hate

Unique Flavors That You'll Either Love or Hate

While some of our testers loved these flavors, we only gave high scores to potato chips that were universally liked. That included O'Zack's Lightly Salted Chips, which also happen to be seasoned with other spices. It was a bit powdery, but still good, according to a few testers.

Koikeya's Suppamucho Ume flavored chips taste like pickled plums (umeboshi), which means it's on the sour side of flavor. While some liked it, others said that the taste of umeboshi and potatoes didn't blend well.

What we found with Muji's French Potato Chips (Salt) was that its taste was focused more on the potato itself than the salt flavor. If you love the taste of potatoes, though, you should enjoy it.

Not Quite the Flavor They Were Going for

Not Quite the Flavor They Were Going for

Many of the chips that scored lowest in our test were chips that didn't quite match the flavor they were advertising. For example, we definitely tasted double amounts of spice in Calbee's Consomme Double Punch Potato Chips, but we didn't taste double amounts of consomme. We also didn't taste the consomme part of Sokensha's Vegetable Consomme Potato Chips, but we did taste the veggies.

We didn't really understand the reasoning behind Calbee's French Salad Potato Chips; they were tasty, but the flavor seemed a bit too high class to be on a potato chip. And we thought Terra Foods' Grilled Potato Chips (Salt) were so soft and melty that they almost tasted like rice crackers.

A Little Too Heavy to Snack on

A Little Too Heavy to Snack on

Calbee's Ridged Salt Potato Chips are thick and rich to the point where we were satisfied with the taste but weren't sure if we'd be able to finish a whole bag. Its flavor is great, though, so we'd recommend this as a snack that you eat slowly and savor.

Where's the Potato Part of the Potato Chip?

Where's the Potato Part of the Potato Chip?

When we ate Yamayoshi's Wasabeef chips, we certainly enjoyed the beefy taste with its spicy wasabi kick, but we weren't able to tell that we were eating a potato chip because the flavor was so dominant. O'Zack's Seaweed and Salt chips were heavy on the salt, but its powdery texture took away from the texture of the potato.

A Little Too Generous with the Salt

A Little Too Generous with the Salt

Some chips, like Lawson's Thick-cut Potato Chips (Lightly Salted) went a little too heavy on the salt. Another thing we found prevalent among our tested chips is that "seaweed and salt" flavors tended to put way more emphasis on the "salt" part.

This includes Koikeya Pride Potato Rich Seaweed and Salt chips and Family Mart's Rich Seaweed and Salt Potato Chips, which weren't entirely unpleasant in the end. However, once it got to Calbee's Seaweed and Salt Potato Chips and Koikeya's Seaweed and Salt Potato Chips, it got to be just a bit too much.

Not Enough Crunch and/or Flavor

Not Enough Crunch and/or Flavor

With these chips, we didn't get the satisfying flavor or crunch that we were expecting from a great potato chip. For instance, we didn't get nearly the crispy potato texture we wanted from Calbee's Thick-cut Chicken Consomme chips.

As for flavor, we tasted a distinct lack of it in Calbee's Consomme Punch Potato Chips. We found that if we stacked 2 or 3 Chip Star's Seaweed and Salt or Consomme chips we could get the amount of flavor we wanted, but not with just one.

Also, many of our testers wanted to add some extra salt to Fukugawa Oil & Fat Co., Ltd.'s Non-chemically seasoned Potato Chips and Kikusuido's Fresh Potato Chips.

How We Tested the Potato Chips

How We Tested the Potato Chips

How we tested the potato chips is pretty simple: we ate them. After researching which chips to buy and purchasing them, we gathered 5 of our editors to score each chip's level of deliciousness.

How We Tested the Potato Chips

Chips that had a good flavor balance, texture, and that sense of "I am eating a potato," got the highest scores.

How to Choose Potato Chips - Buying Guide

Here are five big things to look out for.

① Choose a Flavor That Fits Your Tastes and Situation

① Choose a Flavor That Fits Your Tastes and Situation

"Choose a flavor you like" is stating the obvious, but we also recommend thinking about the situation in which you'll be eating chips. Are you going to eat them by themselves? Are you going to enjoy them with a nice cup of tea? Or are they going to be a drinking snack?

We recommend sweeter flavors for tea and spicier flavors if being paired with alcohol. We also recommend trying some unique flavors once in a while (like pizza!) so you have a good conversation starter.

① Choose a Flavor That Fits Your Tastes and Situation

By the way, the chips that rated lowest in our test were the "healthy" ones. If you're looking for good flavor and texture, you may want to steer clear of these.

② Get to Know the Characteristics of Different Chip Makers

② Get to Know the Characteristics of Different Chip Makers

As you probably know, all salt-flavored potato chips are not made the same. Factors like sodium content, texture, and oiliness can vary widely among different chip makers, because that's what makes them stand out from each other. Trying a variety of flavors from different makers will help you figure out your perfect chip.

For us, we trust Calbee's salt-flavored chips, but we prefer Koikeya's seaweed and salt chips. Yamayoshi and Hula's chips tend to have unique flavorings as well, so we recommend giving them a taste.

③ Try Different Cuts for Different Textures

③ Try Different Cuts for Different Textures

We added texture to our deliciousness rating for a reason; the potato matters just as much as the flavor. We've discovered 4 main cuts of chips as pictured above: regular (top-left), ridged (top-right), kettle-cooked (bottom-left), and non-fried (bottom-right).

Ridged chips tend to have stronger flavors and provide a better crunch, which make them great for serious snacking. Kettle-cooked chips are best for enjoying that pure potato flavor, and while non-fried chips don't have a ton of texture, they're great if you're on a diet. Choose a chip cut that fits your mood when browsing.

④ Don't Forget to Consider Shape

④ Don't Forget to Consider Shape

Regular potato chips are made by slicing potatoes and frying them, but molded chips are made by creating a powder of the potatoes and mixing them with ingredients. They are then hardened and molded to their final shape. Think Pringles; in Japan, they would be Chip Star brand chips.

These chips are best enjoyed stacked up and crunched in bunches, and they're also pretty compact. That means you can take them on the go for some light snacking.

⑤ Consider Area-limited Chips as Gifts

⑤ Consider Area-limited Chips as Gifts

If there's one thing Japan loves, it's area-limited editions of food, and this includes potato chips. Flavors like Calbee's Kyushu Soy Sauce or even Royce' Chocolate Potato Chips are not only a great way to let people know where you've been; it will also give them the opportunity to experience your travels in a sensory way.

While we've only included Japanese chips in this list, chips made by international makers would also make great gifts for friends or loved ones if it symbolizes that area.

Summary

We rounded up members from our editing department, purchased the 44 most popular Japanese potato chips, and tested them all.

We learned that the best of the best potato chips balance flavor, texture, and hardness in a way that can be enjoyed by all ages and tastes. We also recommend trying different makers and unique flavors once in a while; maybe you'll discover a new taste you like, or it could help reaffirm your love for your current favorite brand of chips.
