Products That Didn’t Make the Cut

And why they didn’t quite make it.

Not a Great Texture

Not a Great Texture

What turned us off from Sunkiller Super Lasting Base 50+ is how hard it was to spread over our skin. It will give you a nice matte finish, but nothing else in particular stands out about it. We also weren’t impressed with how Sugao’s Snow Whip Cream did nothing to control shine and instead covered our skin with an oil-blocking veil that could also dry out your skin.

Not Very Durable

Not Very Durable

The ideal primer will last all day and stand up to both sweat and oil. This was not the case with Cezanne’s Make Keep Base in both its Original and Light Blue shades; it held up to neither sweat nor oil, and we noticed a definite shine on our skin at the end of the day. Decorte AQ Lasting UV Primer had a great scent and finish, but it dissolved when it came into contact with sweat.

Not Nearly Enough Shine Control

Not Nearly Enough Shine Control

Some primers for oily skin failed in their main objective: to control oil and shine. This is what we found when we tested Esprique’s Beautiful Stay Make Up Base EX.

Clear Last 3D Long-Lasting Base gave our skin a good tone to start our makeup routine with, but it didn’t prevent our skin from being shiny. We also thought that Chacott for Professionals’ Enriching Base did a poor job of blocking oil, and it didn’t have a great texture, either.

How We Tested the Foundation Primers

We put the 17 most popular foundation primers for damaged hair through four tests, each designed to gauge a different factor. One was to judge how long it lasted, and two more were to gauge how well it controlled shine and what kind of finish it gave our skin. The final test was to see how easy it was to spread on our skin.

Test ① Durability

Test ① Durability
To test how well each primer held up against the tests of time, oil, and sweat, we applied each product to a spot on a board and then put the same amount of the same foundation over it.
After that, we sprayed a mixture of “fake sweat” (water mixed with horse oil) to see how much of the foundation and primer stayed on. We found that foundation primers with silicone performed much better on this test than those without.

Test ② Shine Control

Test ② Shine Control
We also wanted to test how well each foundation primer controlled shine caused by oil, so we had our testers apply each primer and give it a score based on their results. Products that contained ingredients like silica tended to have a matte finish, which absorbed and controlled shine to an extent.

Test ③ Finish

Test ③ Finish
When we tested the primers to see which had the perfect finish, we looked for products that struck a balance between matte and moisturized. If the finish is too matte, it could leave your skin looking dull; but too much moisture could end up looking shiny.

Test ④ Ease of Application

Test ④ Ease of Application
We want our foundation primers to look good and feel good. The key to a good primer is in how well it spreads over skin. We tested this by spreading a pearl-sized amount of each primer over a piece of paper with our ring finger to see how far one swipe would reach. From our results, we discovered that primers with a watery texture rather than a creamy texture were easier to spread.

How to Choose a Foundation Primer for Oily Skin – Buying Guide

Here are three big things to look out for.

① Choose a Primer That Stands up to Shine and Sweat

① Choose a Primer That Stands up to Shine and Sweat
If you have oily skin, you know that one of the worst feelings is noticing an oily sheen on your face halfway through the day. Look for these silicone-based ingredients while you browse to find a foundation primer that will stand up to the test of oil, sweat, and time.
・Dimethicone (ジメチコン)
・Cyclopentasiloxane (シクロペンタシロキサン)
・Cyclomethicone (シクロメチコン)
・Silica (シリカ)
・Mica (マイカ)

② Go with a Soft Primer That’s Easy to Spread

② Go with a Soft Primer That’s Easy to Spread
Before you buy a primer, you’ll want to make sure it spreads nicely. Rubbing a bit on your skin will tell you how far one swipe of product will go. If you’re sticking to only online shopping, you can read reviews to see what other thought of the texture, or you can look specifically for liquid-y or creamy types of primer. These tend to spread and feel the best.

③ Decide How Much Sun Protection You Need in Your Primer

③ Decide How Much Sun Protection You Need in Your Primer
You should consider your climate as much as your skin type when choosing any cosmetics, and foundation primer is no exception. We all know that harmful sun rays can cause spots and damage your skin permanently, so if you need a lot of protection, look for a high SPF and PA count.
Oily skin in particular secretes even more oil in an attempt to protect your skin; giving your glands a helping hand with SPF will hopefully reduce oil and shine. Once springtime brings stronger rays, up your sun protection as well.

Summary

We rounded up members from our editing department, purchased the 17 most popular Japanese foundation primers for oily skin, and tested them all.
We learned that the best of the primers contain silicone-based ingredients, are more on the watery side than the creamy side, and have a generous helping of sun protection properties. Keep all of this in mind when shopping for foundation primers to find the best fit for your oily skin.

It’s easy to see excessive plastic use when we go food shopping, but one area we might not pay as much attention to is in our shaving habits. But it can be hard to figure out where to begin when you’re starting from scratch. In this guide, we’ll go over the major points to look for when buying an eco-friendly razor. Top 10 Best Japanese Hair Dyes in 2020 - Tried and True! (Kao Liese, Palty, and More)
Let’s get this straight–there’s no such thing as a “best” hair dye. Strictly speaking. Just like there’s no such thing as a “best” concealer or “best” mattress or “best” jacket because it all comes down to you. What kind of skin do you have? What kind of sleeping posture? Do you get cold easily? This time around, we ordered the 10 most popular hair dyes found in Japanese drugstores and on Japan’s e-commerce sites and compared the following:1. How vivid the color was2. How gentle on hair the dye was3. How long the color lastedHowever, we want you to keep in mind that the Japanese hair dyes we introduce were formulated with Japanese (naturally black, bleached Asian) hair in mind and are most effective on hair of a similar quality. If you’ve hair like that, great–you’ll probably find that it works better than your average box of CVS/Walgreens stuff, especially Liese Prettia Bubble Hair Color (our number one pick). If not, though, results may be a bit unexpected.

Top 23 Best Japanese Whitening Serums in 2020 - Tried and True! (Haku, SK-II, and More)
It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass. In the Western world, think "glow" or "dewy finish." In order to respond to that aesthetic, cosmetic companies–both drugstore and high-end–here have been coming out with scores of whitening serums, essences, and ampoules. As always, it’s difficult to tell what kind of skincare is effective and what isn’t. That’s why, this time around, we ordered the 24 most popular whitening serums from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as Amazon, Rakuten, and @cosme) and tested them all. We also invited a skincare specialist and had her compare the following:1. Hydration2. Top 18 Best Japanese Anti-Aging Serums in 2020 - Tried and True! (Haku, SK-II, and More)
We might not be able to prevent aging altogether, but we can still age gracefully. That feels like the consensus here in Japan, where anti-aging skincare is popular and constantly evolving. As time goes by, our skin undergoes certain changes–hormones are thrown out of balance, certain functions are dulled–and serums that you used once may no longer be as effective. So which serums a) target the signs of aging and b) will actually work for you? In order to answer that question, we ordered the 18 most popular anti-aging serums from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as Amazon, Rakuten, and @cosme) and tested them all. Top 23 Best Japanese Moisturizers in 2020 - Tried and True! (Minon, FANCL, and More)
Last time, we talked about toners. Now, we move on to the next step in the Japanese skincare routine: moisturizers and face lotions. Face lotions are important–they are, if you remember, the lid that seals your toner in. And, just like in America, in Japan, we have our high-end and drugstore brands, our revolutionary products, and dupes. We thought it was high time someone separated the wheat from the chaff. Top 28 Best Japanese Toners in 2020 - Tried and True! (Minon, Fancl, and More)
We don’t know when it started, but Japanese women are known–have been known for a while–for beautiful skin. And walking around Tokyo, you can’t help but think “where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire.” While there’s no one factor that makes one’s skin what it is, we’d hazard a guess and say skincare is important. The Japanese skincare routine has quite a few steps. There’s cleansing; then the first step after cleansing is toning.
