Products That Didn’t Make the Cut

And why they didn’t quite make it.

Not Bad, but Not Amazing

Not Bad, but Not Amazing

While we didn’t find much displeasing about Muji’s Moisturising Cream, but we weren’t blown away by it either. However, it covered all the basics in moisturizing, texture, and ingredients. We also felt this way about Bee Honey’s Ettoh Cream, though it did have the added bonus of a pleasing honeysuckle scent.

Not a Pleasing Texture

Not a Pleasing Texture

If you want your face cream to have a really nice texture, you may want to steer clear of Locobase Repair Cream, which has a pretty stiff texture. What’s more, it also felt like we were smothering our skin when we blended it in.

Decencia Tsutsumu Face Cream and Chifure Moisture Cream weren’t quite as bad, but we noticed a distinctly heavy characteristic in the creams that made us unable to fall in love with them.

Lacking in the Moisturizing Department

Lacking in the Moisturizing Department

While we applauded Shiseido’s White Lucent Brightening Gel Cream on its whitening powers, we felt it could have done a better job at moisturizing our skin. LuLuLun Moist Gel Cream also didn’t provide as much moisture as other face creams, but it would be great in summer or for oily skin.

Tsuda Seiko’s Skin Barrier Cream has a ton of moisturizing ingredients, but it doesn’t do a great job of moisturizing skin all the way up to the surface. It definitely penetrates pores, but our test cucumber was left looking pretty dry on the top.

How We Tested the Face Creams

We put the 17 most popular face creams through three tests, each designed to gauge a different factor. One was to measure its moisturizing potential, and two were to gauge how it felt to use and how many good ingredients were inside.

Test ① Moisturizing Potential

Test ① Moisturizing Potential
To measure how much moisture a face cream would provide to our skin and help retain it, we applied a small amount of face cream to half of a sliced cucumber. After 6 hours, we removed the face cream and assessed the final results: how moist it was, how soft it was, and what color it was.
In the end, we found that creams with a watery texture provided more moisture to our skin than thick or tough creams.

Test ② How it Felt to Use

Test ② How it Felt to Use
Next, we asked 4 testers to rate how the face creams’ textures felt when spread on their skin, what kind of scent they had, and how easy it was to use the packaging. The resulting score is an average of their evaluations.

Test ③ Ingredients

Test ③ Ingredients
We evaluated the ingredients score based on how many good ingredients were inside rather than how many ingredients are “bad” for your skin. These include ceramides, amino acids, hyaluronic acid, squalane, BG, DPG, and more; they are further explained in the buying guide that comes next.

How to Choose a Face Cream – Buying Guide

Here are three big things to look out for.

① Look for a Face Cream with Plenty of Moisturizing Ingredients

① Look for a Face Cream with Plenty of Moisturizing Ingredients
We’re stating the obvious: you want a face cream that’s moisturizing. But how do you know it’s moisturizing? The key is to look at the ingredients; though some products may have a lot of plant-based ingredients or original ingredients that contribute to its moisturizing capabilities, most products will use the same beneficial ingredients.
Along with things like BG and DPG, here are some ingredients you should look out for:
・セラミド (ceramide)
・プロテオグリカン (proteoglycan)
・スフィンゴ糖脂質 (glycosphyngolipid)
・ヒアルロン酸 (hyaluronic acid)
・アミノ酸種 (amino acids)
・スクワラン (squalane)
・コラーゲン (collagen)
・グリセリン (glycerin)

② Choose a Face Cream with Your Preferred Scent and Texture

② Choose a Face Cream with Your Preferred Scent and Texture
No matter how moisturizing a face cream is, you’re probably not going to use it if you don’t like the texture or smell. If you’re going to be using a face cream everyday, think about what kind of texture, scent, and packaging would make you want to use it everyday.
Shopping online can make it difficult to test out these factors before actually purchasing them, so make sure to read reviews.

③ Check out the Extra Intended Effects

③ Check out the Extra Intended Effects
Face cream is normally the last step in your skin care routine, so you’ll want to end on a high note. Different face creams have different intended effects, so it’s a good idea to consider what’s lacking in your skincare routine that you would like to be in your face cream.
This could mean looking for a face cream that’s suited for dry skin or one that has whitening effects. Check labels thoroughly to discover the intended effects of your face cream.

Summary

We rounded up members from our editing department, purchased the 17 most popular Japanese face creams, and tested them all.
We learned that the best of the best face creams tend to have a watery texture and have a ton of beneficial ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, amino acids, and more. Your personal preference will ultimately decide what kind of scent and texture you want in your face cream, but hopefully we’ve given you a good place to start your search.

Top 10 Best Japanese Hair Dyes in 2020 - Tried and True! (Kao Liese, Palty, and More)
Let’s get this straight–there’s no such thing as a “best” hair dye. Strictly speaking. Just like there’s no such thing as a “best” concealer or “best” mattress or “best” jacket because it all comes down to you. What kind of skin do you have? What kind of sleeping posture? Do you get cold easily? This time around, we ordered the 10 most popular hair dyes found in Japanese drugstores and on Japan’s e-commerce sites and compared the following:1. How vivid the color was2. How gentle on hair the dye was3. How long the color lastedHowever, we want you to keep in mind that the Japanese hair dyes we introduce were formulated with Japanese (naturally black, bleached Asian) hair in mind and are most effective on hair of a similar quality. If you’ve hair like that, great–you’ll probably find that it works better than your average box of CVS/Walgreens stuff, especially Liese Prettia Bubble Hair Color (our number one pick). If not, though, results may be a bit unexpected.

Top 23 Best Japanese Whitening Serums in 2020 - Tried and True! (Haku, SK-II, and More)
It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass. In the Western world, think "glow" or "dewy finish." In order to respond to that aesthetic, cosmetic companies–both drugstore and high-end–here have been coming out with scores of whitening serums, essences, and ampoules. As always, it’s difficult to tell what kind of skincare is effective and what isn’t. That’s why, this time around, we ordered the 24 most popular whitening serums from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as Amazon, Rakuten, and @cosme) and tested them all. We also invited a skincare specialist and had her compare the following:1. Hydration2. Face lotions are important–they are, if you remember, the lid that seals your toner in. Nivea Rich Care & Color Lip is the talk of the town thanks to its ability to both color and protect your lips from harmful UV rays. Amid its rave reviews were claims that the color actually wasn't that great or that it was unnatural-looking and sticky. We wanted to test this out for ourselves, so we purchased it and put it to the test. Here's what we learned.
