The Best at Drying, Dehumidifying, and Deodorizing!

Not only did Sharp’s CV-J180 model dehumidifier eliminate basic odors like wet laundry; its odor-eliminating abilities were effective against stronger odors like sweat and tobacco! Its high-powered dehumidifying capabilities mean your room will be protected from incoming mold as well.

Everything from our test batch of laundry was dried in two hours save for the hood of our hoodie. The dehumidifier’s adjustable rotating louver setting made drying two levels of laundry possible.

The only drawback of this product is it doesn’t have a handle for easy portability. It does, however, have a handle on the water tank that makes emptying and filling the tank simple, and it even has a hole for a hose that you can use to drain water for long periods of time. This is the best dehumidifier we can possibly recommend at mybest!

The Best Dehumidifier on a Budget

For the price that this Iris Ohyama dehumidifier is available at, we’re surprised that it also includes a fully-functioning air purifier. You can tell the state of the air in your room with a helpful LED light that has five color levels ranging from green to red.

Though this household item scored 4.0 in dehumidifying (arguably the most important factor), we still found over 34 ounces of water in the tank after two hours, so it’s more than fine for everyday use. All of our laundry was completely dry except for the back of the hood on our hoodie.

Because its wheels are slightly hard to move and the LED light is a bit bright, you might not want to set this up in your bedroom, but with all of these specs, why wouldn’t you get an Iris Ohyama dehumidifier?

The Best Dehumidifier that Doubles as an Air Circulating Device

Since Corona’s CD-H1818 dehumidifier also functions as an air circulating device, we’re fairly confident in its wind power. That’s probably why it received top marks on our dehumidifying and clothes-drying tests. It’s also super portable with wheels and a handle.

It also comes with a heater setting so you can dehumidify and dry even when it’s cold out! Our only complaint about this appliance is that it makes a lot of noise as it runs, so maybe the bedroom wouldn’t be the best place to set it up.

The Best at Dehumidifying, Hands Down

Out of all the products we tested, it was Mitsubishi’s MJ-P180PX-W dehumidifier removed the most moisture from the room. Its water tank has a unique shape that makes it slightly difficult to handle, but when you consider its effectiveness, it’s worth it.

Despite its powerful dehumidifying capabilities, however, it didn’t score so well in the clothes drying field. Our shirts and socks were dried just fine after our two-hour test, but our towels and hoodies were still half-wet. Perhaps the MJ-M100PX model–which has a moving louver setting–would have been a wiser choice.

A Powerful Clothes-Drying Dehumidifier

No, you’re not seeing double; this is a different Mitsubishi dehumidifier. What’s different is that the MJ-M100PX model invests more power into drying clothes than the model that took 4th place in our ranking.

It also includes a 3D moving eye that works efficiently to dehumidify the room it’s placed in. Its rotating eye also allows the fan to dry left and right as well as up and down.

We used this dehumidifier in a closet and saw great results, so we imagine it would have even better room-drying results if placed in a larger room.

Stylish and Easy to Handle

Cado’s dehumidifier drew our eye because it looks more like a stylish suitcase than your average dehumidifier; and like a suitcase, its portable handle is extendable and retractable. That means you don’t have to physically lift it up as is required with most dehumidifiers! The wheels glide like a breeze.

In terms of actual dehumidifying, it’s fairly average. However, it also includes an antibacterial feature that eliminates bacteria from the air that cause unpleasant odor. It’s quiet enough to use in the bedroom and stylish enough to use in basically every other room in the house. If good looks are a must, then Cado is your choice!

The Best Hybrid Type Dehumidifier

Panasonic’s F-YHSX120 dehumidifier was the best hybrid type device in our test. Not only can it be used to dehumidify your room year-round; it can also eliminate unpleasant odor from the air using Panasonic’s Nano Ion technology.

While this is a great device to eliminate odors from your closet as well as dry clothes, its not-so-smooth wheels and heavy body make it hard to move around. Its clothing care features make up for that and land it a spot in our top list, though!

Products That Didn’t Make the Cut

And why they didn’t quite make it.

Decent Specs but Average Dehumidifying Powers

Decent Specs but Average Dehumidifying Powers

Corona’s CD-S6318 dehumidifier has a price to die for, but it doesn’t do its job very well. It hardly dehumidified the room at all, but even our towels were about 80% dry at the end of our clothes drying test. However, with a louver that only moves up and down manually and no wheels, it’s not the easiest to set up or operate.

SHARP’s CV-J71-W model Dehumidifier is your go-to product for eliminating odors from the air. It eliminates stronger smells like tobacco and body odor as well as that good old laundry drying smell. It’s also probably the quietest device in our ranking regardless of its setting. However, in terms of dehumidifying and drying? Below average. Try this product only if you’re concerned with noise and odor.

De’Longhi’s Tasciugo Aria Dry Dehumidifier model DEX16FJ may have shown us only average drying potential, but it has a double filter that can prevent allergens like dust and pollen from spreading around the room. If you have allergies, this is a product to consider.

Good Price, Below Average Results

Good Price, Below Average Results

Iris Ohyama’s Compressor Type Dehumidifier model DCE-6515 has a reasonably low price of $111.37 and all of the basic dehumidifier functions, but that’s about its only selling point. It doesn’t have strong dehumidifying, clothes-drying, or even noise-cancelling powers. If you’re living alone or just want to reduce the effects of a hot and muggy day, this might be a good and cheap product for you.

iSiler’s Dehumidifier is a semiconductor type dehumidifier with an impressively large water tank. Despite its half-gallon capacity, however, it barely took the moisture out of the room even when left on for a whole day.

Lemebo’s Small Dehumidifier ranked last in our list. In the first two hours we left this semiconductor-type device on, it absorbed less than one ounce of water. Its appearance is also overall cheap-looking. You’d be better off finding a cheap compressor or desiccant type dehumidifier.

How We Tested the Dehumidifiers

We put the 13 most popular dehumidifiers through a series of four tests, each designed to gauge a different factor. Two of them measured the product’s dehumidifying and drying ability while the other two focused more on how user-friendly it was and how quiet it was.

Test ① Dehumidifying Power

Test ① Dehumidifying Power

First, we set up a bathroom with a humidifier and tried our best to make the room the same temperature and humidity for each dehumidifier. Then, we measured how much water was left in the dehumidifier’s tank after 2 hours.

Test ② Clothes Drying Power

Test ② Clothes Drying Power

For our laundry test, we hung up a freshly-washed pair of socks, a shirt, a hoodie, and a towel. Then, we let the dehumidifiers work their magic. We checked the results at the end with a moisture-level checking device and our own hands.

Test ③ User Friendly

Test ③ User Friendly

This test is a little subjective, but we wanted to see how easy it would be to do things like empty the water tank and move the dehumidifier around the house. We also gave bonus points for specs like deodorizing settings and automatic on/off timers.

Test ④ Noise Level

Test ④ Noise Level

We also tested each device to see how much noise it produced on each setting using a noise-level checker. We found that devices with specific settings like “overnight dry” or “quiet mode” produced the least amount of background noise.

Tips on How to Choose a Japanese Dehumidifier – Buying Guide

Here are four big things to look out for.

① Consider When You’re Going to Need a Dehumidifier

When choosing a dehumidifier, think about when you’ll need it and how you’ll use it. There are four main types of dehumidifiers we found in our research, and they are all suited to different climates or seasons.

Compressor type dehumidifiers

Compressor type dehumidifiers draw warm moisture from the air and cool it down to a liquid temperature, so these work best when it’s hot out. Think tropical climates or hot and muggy summers. If there’s a bonus heater installed, it can also be effective in colder weather.

Desiccant types

Desiccant types heat up moisture in the air before cooling it down to a liquid temperature, so these work best in colder weather such as the winter months.

hybrid type dehumidifiers

There are also hybrid type dehumidifiers that work all year round. However, they don’t work very well in extremely cold environments, and they also tend to take up more space and more money in your wallet.

semiconductor types

The fourth type of dehumidifier we found in our research were semiconductor types. These are small in size, noise level, and price. They’re often used for small or concentrated areas such as the closet or your bedside.

Each type has its pros and cons; while compressor type dehumidifiers can look a little bulky and produce slightly too much noise to ignore, the smaller and quieter desiccant types dehumidifiers tend use more electricity, making for a higher bill.

② Choose a Dehumidifier According to Room Size

② Choose a Dehumidifier According to Room Size

We’ll state the obvious: smaller dehumidifiers are built to work in smaller spaces and larger ones for larger spaces. But, did you also know this varies by the building material, too? A dehumidifier set up in a concrete-type building will be effective over a larger space than in a wood-type building.

③ Consider How Long You’ll Use it

③ Consider How Long You’ll Use it

Are you the type of person that only uses appliances when you’re using that area, or do you leave it on constantly? If you’re going to use it when you’re asleep or while you’re not using that room, look for a dehumidifier with a water tank over half a gallon or one that continuously drains water. These dehumidifiers usually come with a connecting drain hose to hook up to the device. Automatic on/off timers are also good specs, and some even come with an overnight dry mode.

If you go for a dehumidifier with a larger tank, test out the water tank before buying. If the tank doesn’t have a handle or shape that makes it easy to pick up, empty, and put down, then it’s going to be difficult to use.

④ Will You Use it to Dry Clothes?

④ Will You Use it to Dry Clothes?

If you don’t have or use an electric clothes drying machine, chances are that your clothes will need some extra help drying when there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Unfortunately, drying laundry doesn’t always smell so great when dried indoors. To prevent that wet laundry smell and other odors from permeating your room, look for dehumidifiers that also have a deodorizing feature. There are also air purifying settings on some such as Panasonic and Sharp products.

Another selling point is a manually adjustable fan. This will help you direct air flow to the areas of laundry you want to dry most quickly. Devices with specific settings for automatic clothes drying are also helpful. The best laundry-drying device we’ve found is one with Mitsubishi’s 3D Moving Eye that moves in all directions.

Looking for Other Household Electronic Recommendations? Look No Further

We’ve given you suggestions for how to deal with hot and muggy weather, but what about colder weather? At mybest, we searched for the best portable heaters so you don’t have to.

Summary

We rounded up members from our editing department, purchased the 13 most popular Japanese dehumidifiers, and tested them all.

We learned that the best of the best dehumidifiers tend to be compressor types that come with a swath of extra features like automatic timers, deodorizers, and large water tanks for long-term use. Pay attention to these factors when considering your dehumidifying needs to find the perfect device for your space.

  • Uni Power Tank 0.7 Review - mybest
The Power Tank is one of those cheap, disposable pens. And to save money, companies are going have to cut corners somewhere, so it makes sense to wonder. Is the pen scratchy? Is it ergonomic?
