10 Best Japanese Dehumidifiers in 2021 - Tried and True! (Mitsubishi, Sharp, and More)

When humidity levels rise, you might find yourself sweating profusely at home. Extra moisture in the air can make your home feel muggy and you may feel sticky and gross. This is where a dehumidifier can come in handy! Japan is no stranger to high levels of humidity, so, naturally, dehumidifiers are made to address these issues. To figure out which were the best, though, our editors searched Japanese e-commerce sites (such as Kakaku.com, Amazon, and Rakuten) and then chose some of the most popular products and tested them.

We focused on four things: how well it removed moisture, whether it could be used to dry clothes, ease of use, and noise level. We then compiled everything we learned into a buying guide about and list of the best Japanese dehumidifiers available online. We loved the Clothes-Drying Compressor Type Dehumidifier by Sharp for it's efficiency and ability to perform multiple tasks, including deodorizing and drying clothing. Check out more below!

How We Tested the Dehumidifiers

We put the 13 most popular dehumidifiers through a series of four tests, each designed to gauge a different factor. Two of them measured the product’s dehumidifying and drying ability while the other two focused more on how user-friendly it was and how quiet it was.

Test ① Dehumidifying Power

Test ① Dehumidifying Power
First, we set up a bathroom with a humidifier and tried our best to make the room the same temperature and humidity for each dehumidifier. Then, we measured how much water was collected in the dehumidifier’s tank after two hours.

Semiconductor Types Collected Over One Liter Less Than Other Types

Semiconductor Types Collected Over One Liter Less Than Other Types

After putting the machines to work for two hours, we found that there was a difference of about one liter, or 0.26 gallons, between the dehumidifier with the least amount gathered and the most gathered.

Compared to Mitsubishi's MJ-P180PX, which was able to gather 1412 milliliters (0.37 gallons), using two semiconductor type humidifiers only collected about 10 to 27 milliliters (about 0.01 gallons) of water.

Even if you keep your semiconductor type dehumidifier on for a whole day, it would only be able to collect about 100 milliliters (0.03 gallons) of moisture from the air, so these types of dehumidifiers may not be the best choice for those who want a really effective machine.

Test ② Clothes Drying Power

Test ② Clothes Drying Power
For our laundry test, we hung up a freshly-washed pair of socks, a shirt, a hoodie, and a towel. Then, we let the dehumidifiers work their magic. We checked the results at the end with a moisture-level checking device and our own hands.

There Were Models That Even Worked to Dry Thick Hoodies and Bath Towels

There Were Models That Even Worked to Dry Thick Hoodies and Bath Towels

There was quite a difference between models that had clothes drying modes and those that didn't. Those that had the function were able to almost fully dry damp socks and shirts; ones that didn't, we weren't able to see much drying power.

The specific models that were able to dry even thicker hoodies and bath towels were the following three models:

  • Sharp CV-J180
  • Corona CD-H1818
  • Iris Ohyama DCE-120

Test ③ User Friendly

Test ③ User Friendly
This test is a little subjective, but we wanted to see how easy it would be to do things like empty the water tank and move the dehumidifier around the house. We also gave bonus points for specs like deodorizing settings and automatic on/off timers.

Wheels are Convenient but May Tip Over When Moved

Wheels are Convenient but May Tip Over When Moved

Overall, there are two types of dehumidifiers: ones that can be held with one hand by an attached handle and types that have grooves on the side and need to be lifted with both hands. It makes sense then, that models with a handle are easier to move around the house. It's even more convenient if it has wheels.

But there are often models that are still heavy despite having handles and ones with wheels that can only move in one direction, so there is a risk of the dehumidifier tipping over if not handled carefully. We talk about wheels in the product descriptions above if you want to know more about the condition of each!

Test ④ Noise Level

Test ④ Noise Level
We also tested each device to see how much noise it produced on each setting using a noise-level checker. We found that devices with specific settings like “overnight dry” or “quiet mode” produced the least amount of background noise.

Overnight Mode and Low-Noise Dehumidifiers Allow for Peaceful Sleep

Overnight Mode and Low-Noise Dehumidifiers Allow for Peaceful Sleep

Out of all the dehumidifiers we tested, the one that made the most noise was Sharp's CV-J180 on its "Mold Barrier" mode at 69.3 decibels. Sharp's CB-J71, on the lowest dehumidifying mode, made the least amount of noise at 46.4 decibels.

70 decibels is about the level of a ringing telephone and matches the noise you may hear on the streets outside during the daytime. 40 to 45 decibels is about the level you would hear in a library, and 50 decibels is said to be about the level of noise swaying trees make, so we would say that a dehumidifier that makes noise at about 46.4 decibels is quiet enough for most people.

However, most dehumidifiers, at their highest dehumidifying setting, run at about 50 decibels or more. We recommend using your dehumidifier at its lowest setting when you're trying to sleep or relax.

Tips on How to Choose a Japanese Dehumidifier – Buying Guide

Next, we'll go over five big things to look out for when you're finding your next dehumidifier.

Consider When You’re Going to Need a Dehumidifier

When choosing a dehumidifier, think about when you’ll need it and how you’ll use it. There are four main types of dehumidifiers we found in our research, and they are all suited to different climates or seasons.

Compressor Types are Great for Summer and Rainy Seasons

Compressor Types are Great for Summer and Rainy Seasons
Compressor type dehumidifiers draw warm moisture from the air and cool it down to a liquid temperature, so these work best when it’s hot out - think tropical climates or hot and muggy summers. If there’s a bonus heater installed, it can also be effective in colder weather.

Desiccant Types Work Best in the Winter

Desiccant Types Work Best in the Winter
Desiccant types heat up moisture in the air before cooling it down to a liquid temperature, so these work best in colder weather such as the winter months. They may also be referred to as Zeolite type humidifiers because zeolite is a desiccant material.

These types of humidifiers have more options that are compact and quiet, but they consume a lot of power compared to compressor type humidifiers, so your electric bill may be affected in a big way.

Desiccant Types Work Best in the Winter

In Japan, if you use a compressor type humidifier for 10 hours a day, then you'd be charged around 50 to 60 yen (0.48 to 0.58 dollars) for that day's use, whereas, with a desiccant type, you'd be charged 100 to 120 yen (0.96 to 1.16 dollars).

So your bill would be around two to three times higher! If you're planning on mainly using your humidifier in the summer, then it would be better to get a compressor type or hybrid humidifier with a heater, instead.

Hybrid Types Can Be Used Year-Round

Hybrid Types Can Be Used Year-Round
There are also hybrid type dehumidifiers that work all year round, combining the best points of both compressor and desiccant humidifiers. However, they don’t work very well in extremely cold environments, and they also tend to take up more space and more money in your wallet.

Though some compressor-type models include a heater, they won't work well in extremely cold winters. If your room temperature drops lower than 41 degrees Fahrenheit, then it's best to think of using a hybrid humidifer.

However, hybrids tend to be on the larger and more expensive side, so keep that in mind when purchasing your humidifier.

Semiconductor Types are Compact and Easy to Use

Semiconductor Types are Compact and Easy to Use
The fourth type of dehumidifier we found in our research were semiconductor types. These are small in size, noise level, and price. They’re often used for small or concentrated areas such as the closet or your bedside.

However, when your room temperature is low, they don't function very well, so they're not suitable for winter. They're also unlikely to have enough power to dehumidify your whole room, so if you're thinking of getting a semiconductor type, then you should probably also get another dehumidifier as a backup.

Remember, each type of machine has its pros and cons; while compressor-type dehumidifiers can look a little bulky and produce slightly too much noise to ignore, the smaller and quieter desiccant types tend to use more electricity, making for a higher bill.

Choose a Dehumidifier According to Room Size

Choose a Dehumidifier According to Room Size

It might seem obvious, but smaller dehumidifiers are built to work in smaller spaces and larger ones for larger spaces. Smaller humidifiers, at best, can collect up to four to six liters, or 1.1 to 1.6 gallons, of water and are best for rooms about 255 to 314 square feet. Ones that can handle six to eight liters, or 1.6 to 2.1 gallons, are best used in rooms of 314 to 393 square feet.

But, did you also know this varies by the building material, too? A dehumidifier set up in a concrete-type building will be about two times more effective over a larger space than in a wood-type building.

Drying clothes in a room actually brings up the humidity and moisture levels in a room, so if you plan on using the humidifier to dry your clothes, then it's best to buy a model that is built for a room that's a little bigger than than the room you will be using to dry your clothes in.

Consider How Long You'll Use It

Consider How Long You'll Use It
Are you the type of person that only uses appliances when you’re using that area, or do you leave it on constantly? If you’re going to use it when you’re asleep or while you’re not using that room, look for a dehumidifier with a water tank over half a gallon or one that continuously drains water. However, a bigger-sized water tank means a bigger-sized machine in general, so make sure to consider your options first.

These dehumidifiers usually come with a connecting drain hose to hook up to the device, allowing for continuous drainage. You won't need to check the tank for draining, which makes it super convenient. If you don't have plans to use it year-round and want to save some storage space, then these types of humidifiers may be best.

Make Sure That the Humidifier is Easy to Drain

Make Sure That the Humidifier is Easy to Drain

Since a humidifier is something you'll be running throughout the summer season, ease of use is extremely important. Make sure to check whether or not the humidifier's tank is easy to take out and drain. Some have handles that make it easier to carry or drainage holes that are bigger, making it simple to dump out water.

However, this kind of information can be difficult to ascertain just by seeing the product descriptions, so carefully read over the reviews

If you go for a dehumidifier with a larger tank, test out the water tank before buying it. If the tank doesn’t have a handle or shape that makes it easy to pick up, empty, and put down, then it’s going to be difficult to use. In our tests, we also took a look at the drainage for each device, so read over them to help you decide on what to buy!

Think About Whether You Want to Dry Clothes With It

Now that we've gone over the basic functions of a humidifier, we'd like to introduce how these devices can be handy for drying clothes, as well.

Deodorizers Can Help With Smells From Clothing

Deodorizers Can Help With Smells From Clothing

If you don’t have or use an electric clothes drying machine, chances are that your clothes will need some extra help drying when there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Unfortunately, drying laundry doesn’t always smell so great when dried indoors.

To prevent that wet laundry smell and other odors from permeating your room, look for dehumidifiers that also have a deodorizing feature. There are also air purifying settings on some such as Panasonic and Sharp products.

Adjustable Vents Means a Faster Drying Time

Adjustable Vents Means a Faster Drying Time

Another selling point is a manually adjustable fan. This will help you direct airflow to the areas of laundry you want to dry most quickly. We recommend getting a model that allows you to adjust the vents to blow air over a wide area, side to side, or up and down, depending on where and how your laundry is positioned.

There are also machines that blow air irregularly to shake and dry clothing and ones that automatically detect where your clothes are to adjust the direction of airflow and the amount of air blown. We recommend these for people who plan on drying a lot of clothes at once.

Devices with specific settings for automatic clothes drying are also helpful. The best laundry-drying device we’ve found is one with Mitsubishi’s 3D Moving Eye that moves in all directions. The direction of the air blown has more effect on the speed of drying than you'd think!

Check Whether or Not the Device has Timer or Quiet Functions

Check Whether or Not the Device has Timer or Quiet Functions

A timer function on your device is convenient to have if you're planning on drying your clothes when you're sleeping or leave the house. Since there are many variations in how long timers can be set, anywhere from one hour to eight hours, make sure to pick up one that matches your lifestyle.

For those who live in a studio apartment where the living room and the bedroom are combined, then you may be worried about noise. But, don't worry, some humidifiers have an overnight mode for drying clothes!

Summary

We rounded up members from our editing department, purchased the 13 most popular Japanese dehumidifiers, and tested them all.
We learned that the best of the best dehumidifiers tend to be compressor types that come with a swath of extra features like automatic timers, deodorizers, and large water tanks for long-term use. Pay attention to these factors when considering your dehumidifying needs to find the perfect device for your space.

A Humidifier for the Drier Months

On the opposite end of the spectrum, but also in the realm of air-related devices, is a humidifier. Dehumidifiers are great for humid climates and summertime weather, but when winter comes, you may find yourself having the opposite problem - too dry weather! You'll need a humidifier. Luckily, this one can add some moisture back into the air. It comes highly recommended by sustainability blogger Julia Miller.
