Canmake Gokubuto Mascara & Gokunobi Mascara Review – mybest

Canmake Gokubuto Mascara & Gokunobi Mascara Review - mybest

Canmake has two sister mascaras out: Gokubuto, the volumizing one, and Gokunobi, the lengthening one. Both are tubing mascaras, meaning they come off with warm water. But as with all wash-off mascaras, you’re left to wonder–will it smudge? Can it hold a curl? What’s the finish like?

This time around, our editing department purchased both the Gokubuto and Gokunobi mascaras and tested for the above. We also made sure they were easy to apply and remove. This is everything we learned.

Tell Me More about Gokubuto and Gokunobi

First, what they have in common. They’re both tubing mascaras, so they wash off with warm water. Both contain plenty of wax, which should help them hold a curl; it should also make them resistant to sweat, sebum, and tears. They’re safe to use on top of false lashes or extensions.

Putting Canmake’s Gokubuto and Gokunobi Mascaras to the Test

Putting Canmake's Gokubuto and Gokunobi Mascaras to the Test

We had a group of editors put Canmake’s Gokubuto and Gokunobi mascaras to the test. Specifically, we were looking for the five following factors.

Test ①: Application
Test ②: Finish
Test ③: Smudge Resistance
Test ④: Curl
Test ⑤: Removability

Test ①: Application

The easier a mascara is to use, the better.

Gokubuto is Difficult to Apply in Sleek, Even Coats

Difficult to Apply in Sleek, Even Coats

Because Gokubuto was so thick, it adhered to the brush in great powdery clumps. We also felt the applicator was too long; it was hard to get at the lashes near the corners of our eyes without hitting skin.

Gokunobi’s Brush is More Suited to Delicate Work

Gokunobi's Brush is More Suited to Delicate Work

Gokunobi’s brush was slightly curved and conformed more closely to the slope of our eyes. It was easier to reach bottom lashes and the lashes at the corners of the eyes.

We didn’t get too much excess product on the brush, and the fibers readily adhered to lashes during application. We got a smooth, even coat, even without wiggling the applicator.

Test ②: Finish

We were looking for volume and/or length–without clumps.

Gokubuto: Kind of Makes Your Lashes Look Like Dead Tree Branches

Don't Apply Too Many Coats Unless You Want Your Lashes to Look like a Creepy Forest from a Disney Movie

Gokubuto gave us volume–by sticking our lashes together in tree branch-like clusters. And we had only applied a single coat at this point. For a more natural finish, make sure to brush your lashes through with a spoolie. After it dried, the mascara looked more powdery than sleek.

In addition, because the brush was so hard to use, it was hard to get at the roots of our lashes without dabbing mascara onto skin. You may want to keep cotton swabs or tissues close by, especially if your hands aren’t particularly steady.

Gokunobi: Lengthens and Separates Lashes, Though We Would’ve Preferred Less Clumping and Crookedness

Gokunobi: Lengthens and Separates Lashes, Though We Would've Preferred Less Clumping and Crookedness

Gokunobi also clumped, though not as badly. Our lashes were like baby tree branches. They were spread out farther and would probably be less crooked if we had gone through them with a spoolie.

Some of the fiber strands did litter themselves around our eyes, so we also recommend keeping a tissue or cotton swab around.

Test ③: Smudge Resistance

We put both mascaras through an 8-hour wear test.

Neither Will Really Budge after a Day at the Office

Neither Will Really Budge after a Day at the Office

  1. Gokubuto Mascara: Right after application
  2. Gokubuto Mascara: After 8-hour wear test
  3. Gokunobi Mascara: Right after application
  4. Gokunobi Mascara: After 8-hour wear test

At the end of the day, we had a bit of black powder around our eyes, but neither of the mascaras had really budged. They might smear if your eyes were to water a lot or if you were to rub at them, but if all you’re doing is sitting in the office all day, you’ll be fine.

Test ④: Curl

We also looked at how curled our lashes were at the end of the day.

Neither Mascara Will Cause Your Lashes to Droop, though Gokubuto Offers More Lift

Neither Mascara Will Cause Your Lashes to Droop, though Gokubuto Offers More Lift

  1. Gokubuto Mascara: Right after application
  2. Gokubuto Mascara: After 8-hour wear test
  3. Gokunobi Mascara: Right after application
  4. Gokunobi Mascara: After 8-hour wear test

Gokubuto lifted our lashes and held on to a curve the entire day. Gokunobi required a bit more work with a curler, but it was light enough that it didn’t cause our lashes to droop.

Test ⑤: Removability

While we don’t want mascara that smudges, we do want mascara that comes off easily at the end of the day.

Comes off with Warm Water, as Tubing Mascara Should

Comes off with Warm Water, as Tubing Mascara Should

  1. Gokubuto Mascara: Right After application
  2. Gokubuto Mascara: After rinsing
  3. Gokunobi Mascara: Right after application
  4. Gokunobi Mascara: After rinsing

We rinsed off our mascara with 40℃ (104℉) water. Both Gokubuto and Gokunobi started coming off in huge flakes. You won’t need a separate eye makeup remover for either.

The Final Verdict: Gokubuto Does Indeed Provide Volume and Gokunobi Length. Both, However, Take Some Skill to Apply

The Final Verdict: Gokubuto Does Indeed Provide Volume and Gokunobi Length. Both, However, Take Some Skill to Apply

The good: both Gokubuto and Gokunobi are smudge-resistant, yet manage to come off with warm water. They’re light-weight enough to keep a curl and volumize (Gokubuto) and lengthen (Gokunobi).

However, they do clump. But as long as you’re smart about application–comb out your lashes, wipe off excess product on a tissue–you should be good to go.

We put Canmake’s Gokubuto and Gokunobi mascaras to the test. We liked the formulas because they didn’t really smudge but were easy to remove. However, they do both clump easily, so make sure you get rid of excess product before application!

  • Maybelline Lashionista Review - mybest
Our editors purchased Maybelline’s Lashionista and put it to the test. We wanted to see if it would add volume, length, and curl without clumping, if it was easy to remove, and if it was smudge-proof. We also checked how easy it was to apply. While a professional makeup artist might be able to get an amazing look out of a difficult product, we like things that are quick and simple. This is what we learned during testing. Maybelline’s Lashionista is a tubing mascara, meaning it comes off with hot water. There’s a bunch of little fiber strands in the formula. They adhere onto your lashes, adding volume and length. The fiber used is now 15% lighter, meaning the product weighs less on your lashes so they

  • Heroine Make Advanced Film Mascara Review - mybest
It’s almost like a formula: Japanese + eyelashes = Heroine Make. If you know anything about Japanese cosmetics, you’re no doubt familiar with the brand and their peacock-lashed characters, a mashup between Disney princesses and shojo manga heroines from the 90s. Getting good tubing mascara is one of the best things you can do for your lashes (other than putting nothing on them at all, but we aren’t giving up our smokey eyes). Still, you can’t help but wonder whether the mascara will flake. If it’ll clump. If it’ll even volumize or elongate your lashes at all. If you’re anything like us, when you pass someone with thick eyelashes in the street, you give them a glance of envy. And this happens a lot–we’re in Japan, land of cosmetics. Fake eyelashes, of course, are wildly popular here, but a good mascara is just as invaluable (and less likely to claim a few real eyelashes as sacrifice). Especially here in Japan, there are many types and brands: drugstore and high-end, tubing and waterproof. And the more choices you have, the harder it is to choose. If you’ve stepped foot into a Japanese drugstore before, you’ve seen Heroine Make. They’re known as much for their cosmetics as they are for their twinkly-eyed heroines of yesteryear (who are oddly reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein pop art). But are they popular because their products are good or is it just skillful advertising? Our editing department purchased Heroine Make’s top-selling eyeliner to see if it was worth the hype. • Top 30 Best Japanese Waterproof Eyeliners to Buy Online 2019
We had flurries of snow in Tokyo this week, but it doesn’t change the fact that spring and summer aren’t too far off. That means warmer weather, singing birds, blooming flowers, allergies, streaming eyes, and sweat.
