Minon Amino Moist Milky Cleansing Review

Cleansers are usually a trade-off. You can find a cleanser that works on everything from waterproof mascara to lip tint, but it’s going to be harsh. Or you could find a cleanser that’s mild but will remove maybe liquid foundation. At best.

However, at mybest, we’re constantly in search of a cleanser that gives you the best of both worlds. This time around, our editing department purchased Minon Amino Moist’s Moist Milky Cleansing. We looked at the ingredients and tested for both cleansing power and moisture. This is what we learned.

Why is Minon Amino Moist's Milky Cleansing So Popular?

Why is Minon Amino Moist's Milky Cleansing So Popular?

Minon's cleansing milk is so thick, it feels more like cream. The formula features nine amino acids, which hydrate and nourish. With a single tube, you knock out two birds with one stone: cleansing and moisturization.

The cleanser is popular among sensitive-skinned folks. It's fragrance- and dye-free and available at a drugstore price--about 1,300 yen in Japan and a bit more in the States. One bottle gives you ~100 g of product, so assuming you use a 2 cm wide dollop each time you cleanse, one purchase should last you about 50 days.

Putting Minon’s Moist Milky Cleansing to the Test

Putting Minon’s Moist Milky Cleansing to the Test
We had a group of editors put Minon Amino Moist’s Moist Milky Cleansing to the test. Specifically, we were looking for the following four factors.
Test ①: Cleansing Power
Test ②: Application
Test ③: Hydration
Test ④: Ingredients

Test ①: Cleansing Power

Cleansers are meant to work not only on oil and dirt but also on makeup.

You’d Be Hard Put to Find Another Mild Cleansing Milk as Effective

You’d Be Hard Put to Find Another Mild Cleansing Milk as Effective
We tested the cleanser out on the following products.
Products We Tested on
  • Waterproof Mascara
  • Eyeshadow
  • Waterproof Eyeliner
  • Lip Tint
  • Liquid Foundation

For a cleansing milk, Minon’s product was exceptional. It worked on liquid foundation, eyeshadow, and surprisingly waterproof mascara. While the eyeliner and tint left behind some residue, you could work it off with either a dedicated eye makeup remover or face wash.

Test ②: Application

We looked at things like texture and scent.

Thick Texture Comes with Both Pros and Cons

Thick Texture Comes with Both Pros and Cons
Like we mentioned before, the cleanser felt more like cream than milk. It didn’t spread readily and ran out quickly. Still, it acted as a kind of cushion between fingers and skin and made sure we weren’t rubbing at our face more than necessary.
It was also completely unscented.

When It Thins Down to a Milky Texture, It’s Time to Rinse off

When It Thins Down to a Milky Texture, It’s Time to Rinse off
Though it comes out of the tube thick, as the formula blends with makeup, it thins out until it does feel like milk lotion. That’s when it’s time to rinse off.
It’s nice if you’re never really sure when you’re done cleansing or you’re always tempted to rinse off too early (guilty).

Test ③: Hydration

We used a moisture analyzer (the Corneometer) to test hydration levels in our skin right before, right after, and five minutes after cleansing.

Protects Skin with a Long-Lasting Membrane of Moisture

Protects Skin with a Long-Lasting Membrane of Moisture
Skin was plump and supple after cleansing. While it did feel like a thin membrane was stretched over skin, the residue wasn’t unpleasantly sticky. This would be the perfect winter cleanser.
The numbers also attested to how hydrating the cleanser was. Even after five minutes had passed, our skin remained more moisturized that it was before cleansing. Admittedly, the values weren’t extraordinary, but they were enough to satisfy us.
Skin Hydration Levels

  • Before Cleansing: 23.8
  • Right after Cleansing: 46.9
  • Five Minutes after Cleansing: 31.1

Test ④: Ingredients

We were looking for both nourishing ingredients and possible irritants.

Formulated to Be Safe for Dry and Sensitive Skin

Formulated to Be Safe for Dry and Sensitive Skin
Minon’s cleansing milk is formulated to be safe for a wide variety of skin types, including sensitive. It’s free of fragrances, dyes, alcohols, parabens, and ingredients that absorb UV rays (the reason many people are allergic to sunscreen).
The company itself has performed tests ensuring the products will be safe for those with dry and sensitive skin. While nothing is guaranteed, it’s unlikely that the Moist Milky Cleansing will stir up any reactions.

Minon’s Nine Big Amino Acids Hydrate and Protect the Skin

Minon’s Nine Big Amino Acids Hydrate and Protect the Skin
Amino acids play a big role in the hydration of the skin. They ensure that moisture gets where it needs to go and strengthen the barrier that protects your skin from environmental stressors.
Minon Amino Moist boasts a proprietary formula of nine amino acids. They are as follows.
The Nine Amino Acids
  • Valine
  • Threonine
  • Serine
  • Leucine
  • Proline
  • Histidine
  • Glycine
  • Alanine
  • Arginine

The Final Verdict: Offers Decent Cleansing Despite Its Mild Formula. Minon’s Milky Cleansing Earns Our Seal of Approval

The Final Verdict: Offers Decent Cleansing Despite Its Mild Formula. Minon’s Milky Cleansing Earns Our Seal of Approval
Minon Amino Moist’s milk cleanser has a thick, creamy texture. It cushions skin and allows for a gentle, hydrating cleanse. It’s well suited for dry and sensitive skin. And despite its mildness, it’s effective, washing away even waterproof mascara.
It’s unscented and free of common irritants. We also give it brownie points for being reasonably priced.

How to Use Minon’s Moist Milky Cleansing

How to Use Minon’s Moist Milky Cleansing
Minon recommends double-cleansing–that is, following up the cleanser with a separate face wash. The Moist Milky Cleansing is also less effective when wet, so make sure you apply onto a dry face with dry hands.
Instructions
  1. Dispense a 2 cm wide dollop into the palm of your hand.
  2. With the pads of your fingers, gently massage into your face in circular motions, allowing the cleanser to mix with your makeup.
  3. Once it’s thinned down to a milky texture, rinse the cleanser off with warm water.

Minon doesn’t specify whether the product is safe for eyelash extensions. It does contain some oil, so if you’re worried, consult with your salon before use.

If you’ve stepped foot into a Japanese drugstore before, you’ve seen Heroine Make. But are they popular because their products are good or is it just skillful advertising? Our editing department purchased Heroine Make’s top-selling eyeliner to see if it was worth the hype. Specifically, we were looking at how easy it was to use, how well-pigmented it was, and how resistant to smudging. This is what we learned during testing.

Top 25 Best Japanese Whitening Serums, Essences, and Ampoules to Buy Online 2020 - Tried and True!
It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence※1. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass.
