Top 60 Best Japanese and Korean Concealers to Buy Online 2019

Top 60 Best Japanese and Korean Concealers to Buy Online 2019

No one has perfect skin, but we sure as heck want it. We’d even venture to say that that’s especially true in Asia, where “whitening,” “brightening,” and “glass skin” are buzzwords. It’s no coincidence that some of the best concealers in the world come from Japan and Korea.

We have concealers for dark circles. We have concealers for scarring, redness, dullness, sallowness. We have powder, stick, and liquid concealers. We have magic concealers (or so they claim to be). To help you sift through all these products, we ordered the 60 most popular concealers from Japan’s e-commerce giants and tested for the following:

  1. Coverage
  2. Longevity
  3. Application

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese and Korean concealers. We also have a few makeup tips and tricks for you at the end of the article, so stay tuned.

How to Choose Japanese and Korean Concealer – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the products, but before that, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out a Japanese or Korean concealer.

① First, Get Your Concealers Straight

We’d say there’s five main types of concealer. Some will work for you, some won’t; it all depends on what kind of finish you’re looking for, as well as your quirks and preferences.

Stick Concealer: Amazing Coverage

Stick Concealer: Amazing Coverage

You want coverage? Get a stick concealer. Stick concealers are convenient; throw one in your pouch for quick touch-ups on the go. The only downside to them, though, is they get cakey fast, so make sure you don’t overapply.

  • Coverage: ★★★
  • Spread: ★☆☆
  • Texture: Dense
  • Best on: Cheeks and Jaw
  • Covers: Spots, Freckles, Acne Scars

Liquid Concealer: Blends Easily, Beginner-Friendly

Liquid Concealer: Blends Easily, Beginner-Friendly

Liquid concealers are, well, liquid, so they spread smoothly over skin. You can cover a lot of ground with just a small dab, so they’re perfect for hiding redness on your cheeks or far-flung freckles. Liquid concealers don’t offer a lot of coverage, though, so they won’t help with any moles or birthmarks.

However, because they go on thin, they look natural and they’re breathable to boot. Liquid concealer can come as a pen or you can apply them with a brush or sponge–you’re pretty much guaranteed to find something that’s easy for you to use.

  • Coverage: ★☆☆
  • Spread: ★★★
  • Texture: Smooth
  • Best on: Under Eye
  • Covers: Dark Circles

Cream Concealer: Offers Coverage and a Stunning Finish

Cream Concealer: Offers Coverage and a Stunning Finish

Cream concealers come out to a natural finish despite how much coverage they provide; adopting the strengths of both stick and liquid concealer. You can use them to hide entire swaths of skin or just to spot correct. Cream concealers even work well around your nose and mouth–areas that are the first to crease when you overapply.

However, you do need to apply with a brush or cotton swab. If your cream concealer doesn’t come with a brush, you’ll have to go out and get one yourself. You might also run across concealer palettes. While it is fun to blend colors, know that it’s actually quite difficult (and messy) to create the perfect shade.

  • Coverage: ★★☆
  • Spread: ★★☆
  • Texture: Middling
  • Best on: Anywhere
  • Covers: Dark Circles, Spots, Freckles, Acne

Pencil Concealer: For Small Spot Corrections

Pencil Concealer: For Small Spot Corrections

For small blemishes that come in big numbers, such as freckles, try a pencil concealer. However, you can’t use pencil concealers where your skin thins out (around your eyes), and they don’t cover a lot of ground. Since pencil concealers tend to be stiff, they’ll irritate pimples, so be careful if you’re covering acne.

  • Coverage: ★★☆
  • Spread: ★☆☆
  • Texture: Stiff
  • Best on: Small Areas
  • Covers: Spots, Freckles, Acne Scars

Powder Concealer: Cover Huge Areas in One Go

Powder Concealer: Cover Huge Areas in One Go

You can’t really aim with powder concealer. Get it for evening out large patches of skin. Also note that powder doesn’t offer a lot of coverage–most people who like powder concealers are either going for a more natural look or are into organic cosmetics.

  • Coverage: ★☆☆
  • Spread: ★★★
  • Texture: Powder
  • Best on: Your Whole Face
  • Covers: Dark Circles, Spots, Freckles, Acne

② Understand Different Colors and Textures and What They’re Meant to Conceal

Concealers can be thick or thin and come in multiple colors (green, yellow, pink…). Every density/color/texture is meant to cover a different kind of blemish–think about what you’re trying to hide.

Acne: More Solid Concealers Can be Irritating. Try Using Different Products to Divide and Conquer

Acne: Solid Concealers Can be Irritating. Try Using Different Products to Divide and Conquer

Beige and yellow tones are usually good for acne. Basically, you want something as close to your skin tone as possible.

If you’ve got fading scars sprinkled all over your face, then try tamping down the redness with a green color corrector. If you want to hone in on just a few acne scars, then try a liquid or pencil concealer. Just don’t use pencil concealer on inflamed pimples, as it can be irritating.

Because you usually need a long-wearing and high coverage concealer for acne, look for a denser product. Just make sure it isn’t too thick, as that will cause a whole other set of problems.

Dark Circles: Go One Shade Brighter to Bring Light to Your Under Eye. Thinner, Smoother Concealers Won’t Crease as Much

Dark Circles: Go One Shade Brighter to Bring Light to Your Under Eye. Thinner, Smoother Concealers Won't Crease as Much

There are three main types of under eye circles. Brown circles are usually the product of pigmentation or UV rays, and they’re best covered with a beige or yellow concealer.

If you haven’t been getting enough sleep or your eyes are otherwise tired, you probably have blue circles; these are best corrected with orange or pink concealers, as they give you a more healthy, flushed complexion. Or you can use a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation.

Black circles are usually the result of sagging skin under your eyes; try using a beige or ocher concealer for these.

Make sure your concealer isn’t too thick. The skin around your eyes is constantly moving; if you go for too much coverage, chances are you’ll experience some creasing. Liquid and cream products are both flexible and work best for dark circles.

Spots and Freckles: Go One Shade Darker

Spots and Freckles: Go One Shade Darker

If you’re looking to cover spots and freckles, look for something that’s identical in color to your skin or just a bit darker. If you try for a concealer that’s too light, you’ll actually end up highlighting your problem areas. When choosing a shade, it’s always a good idea to check the product against your current foundation.

As for texture–well, it depends on where you’re covering. If you’re applying to larger areas of skin, try a softer stick or cream concealer; for spot corrections, go for pencil concealer.

③ Figure out Which Concealers are Long-Wearing and Don’t Crease

Figure out Which Concealers are Long-Wearing and Don't Crease

If you find a concealer formulated for your skin type, then it’ll be less likely to fade. A concealer’s texture is usually determined by how much oil’s in the formula. So if you yourself have oily skin, try a thicker product; if you have dry skin, try a more liquidy product.

Just know that if you leave your makeup on for long enough, it’s going to move, whether because your skin is drying out or greasing up. So no matter what concealer you choose to use in the morning, it’s always nice to have a stick or pencil product in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

We then tested for each of the following things:

Test ①: Coverage
Test ②: Longevity
Test ③: Application

Test ①: Coverage

Coverage

First, we looked at how much each concealer could hide.

We colored our arms blue, brown, and red, simulating dark circles, spots, and acne, respectively. We then applied concealer on top of each dab of color to check for coverage.

The Big Takeaway: The Closer to Our Skin Tone It was, the Better It Covered

The Big Takeaway: The Closer to Our Skin Tone It was, the Better It Covered

The more pigmented a concealer was and the closer it was to our skin tone, the more it covered. Those were pretty much the only two things that mattered, no matter what the color of blemish (red, brown, or blue).

We couldn’t get the hang of concealers that were completely different from our skin tone. Rather than choosing a color corrector that’s super green, yellow, or red, try for a subtler one that’s similar in shade to your foundation.

Test ②: Longevity

Longevity

Next, we tested how long-wearing the concealers were.

We applied the concealers and then sprayed artificial sebum over them, checking how much faded. We also wiped each sample with a tissue to make sure the concealers could withstand friction.

The Big Takeaway: Softer Stick Concealers Didn’t Crack or Fade

The Big Takeaway: Softer Stick Foundations Didn't Crack or Fade

Smooth stick concealers–that is, stick concealers with more oil in the formula–adhered to skin; they didn’t wear off with sebum or friction. However, stick concealers that were more dense and solid peeled off of skin easily.

Concealers that were more liquid in form blended readily into skin upon application; however, they quickly faded if we didn’t give them enough time to set.

Test ③: Application

Application

Finally, we looked at how the concealers applied.

We tried out all the products on our face and arms. We looked at whether or not they spread easily or blended into our skin. We also made note of particularly user-friendly packaging.

The Big Takeaway: You Don’t Need Any Skill to Use a Stick Concealer Properly

The Big Takeaway: You Don't Need Any Skill to Use a Stick Concealer Properly

Stick concealers were easy to use, but they still came out to a nice finish. They might not have spread as readily as liquid concealers, but you can simply blend them out with your fingers.

As for packaging, we have to say that tubes weren’t very popular. You can’t apply concealer straight to your skin; you always need to transfer first to your fingers or a brush. We also had to make sure we squeezed just the right amount of product from the tube–just little annoyances that could be avoided.

Goes on Too Thin to Cover Much. Difficult to Use All Around

This was a liquid concealer, but it didn’t spread easily. The pen tip was firm, and we couldn’t get it to skate across our skin. Not to mention the formula was so thin, we hardly got any coverage at all.

This didn’t hide blemishes; it just obscured them with glitter. You can’t color correct with excel’s Silent Glow; however, you might be able to use it as a highlighter.

Dries So Quickly, It’s Difficult to Get a Smooth Coat. Finish Also Wasn’t Amazing

There was always too much or too little product in the tip. You have to warm it up on the back of your hand to get consistent ink flow; otherwise, the concealer will go on unevenly, and you might end up accentuating the very blemishes you meant to hide. We did like how much control the brush gave us, but it was just too difficult to adjust how much product came out of it.

We were also surprised at how quickly it dried. You have to blend out this concealer as soon as you apply it. More than anything, it didn’t offer much coverage, so we couldn’t see why anyone would go out of their way to buy this product.

A Bright Scarlet Orange that Looks Like Blush. Will Take Time to Master

This is supposed to hide your dark circles and add some blood and life to your under eye area. It set really well into skin, but even though we went over it with both a lighter concealer and foundation, it was hard to get the color to blend in and look natural.

It was decently long-wearing, as expected from a cosplayer’s brand. It’ll have even more staying power if you go over it with a powder. In the end, this concealer worked, but it had a steep learning curve; whether you’ll like it or not depends on your experience and personal preferences.

We Love How Soft and Smooth This Feels. Doesn’t Perform as a Concealer, However

This was as soft as half-melted butter; even though it was a stick concealer, it was gentle on skin. It even worked on the delicate skin around our mouth and eyes.

The color was just as gentle and wasn’t nearly enough to cover pigmentation. There was a bit of shine added in, so you could use it if you just want to correct dullness.

Stands out Too Much. We Can’t Figure out How to Use It

Texture-wise, this blended easily into skin and didn’t clump or settle into creases. However, that doesn’t change the fact that this concealer barely concealed at all.

Both the orange and yellow were very bright, so it didn’t look natural against Japanese skin, which is prone to dullness. (If you naturally have bronze, glowing skin, it might work.) And overall, pigmentation was so thin that this concealer neither worked as a color corrector nor as a blusher.

Watery Concealer with Hardly Any Coverage. All It Does is Give You a Slight Tint

This went on so thin, it looked faded before we even started our wear test. It almost goes without saying, but color was so weak that this product didn’t work as a concealer.

It also creased easily, which made it difficult to apply foundation on top.  The formula was so watery, it often separated; if you don’t blend it out with your fingers right after application, then you’ll be left with brush streaks all over your face. We did like the K-Palette’s elegant packaging, but unless you buy concealers to decorate your room, we suggest you look elsewhere.

Hard to Mix Together and Blend out the Colors. A Concealer that’s Best Left to the Pros

IPSA’s concealer almost always claims a top spot on “Most Popular” lists, but it wasn’t beginner-friendly. The palette comes in three colors, each meant for a separate section of the face; you’re also supposed to mix and blend together the shades to match your skin tone. The product wasn’t dense, and we’d say it offered only light coverage.

This concealer did spread easily and set well. If you love makeup and are skilled with it–and you already own a good primer and foundation–then you may very well appreciate the flexibility that IPSA offers.

Don’t See How This is Different from a Foundation. Just Enough Coverage to Even out Skin Tone a Bit

You shake out a bit of concealer onto the lid or a palette, then apply with a brush. It was pretty difficult to use–powder kept swirling everywhere and adhering to areas that didn’t need the extra coverage. The jar was also quite large and didn’t fit easily into our makeup pouches. The product also went on thin–it didn’t so much conceal as even out skin tone.

The formula was solid, so if you rush during application, you’ll probably end up with gaps and hills. We couldn’t really tap it in or blend it out, but you should get a decent finish if you’re careful about drawing with it.

This concealer was heavily pigmented, and it got cakey fast. It might work if there’s nothing else around, but there’s no reason for you to have to struggle with it every day.

This concealer was creamy, but it was just a bit hard to blend out. It also faded so much that, by the end of the day, we might as well have not been wearing concealer at all.

Application was quite painless though; the cap opened easily and the tube fit well in our hands. We also liked how the tip of the concealer was cut at an angle, so we could cover fine areas.

Smoother textures are great, but this concealer felt a little oily. You get a lighter beige and darker beige with this set. The colors weren’t bright enough to work on dark circles, but they covered up spots and freckles.

You get a “light,” “natural,” and “dark” color with this palette; you’re meant to cover blemishes as well as do a bit of contouring. When we tried it out under our eyes, our dark circles faded a bit, but they weren’t completely hidden. It also oxidized over time.

The formula was dense and hardened into blocks when exposed to cold temperatures. It dried out when we applied around our eyes, creasing around crow’s feet and expression lines. We wouldn’t recommend using this concealer in the winter.

Thin and Smooth as Water. Doesn’t Apply Evenly

You apply this concealer with a felt tip, which made it easy to target small areas–a pimple here, a spot there. The formula was thin, so it blended out easily.

However, this concealer didn’t spread far, and we were left with uneven coloring and streaking. We had to smooth everything out with a foundation afterwards. It also didn’t offer enough coverage to even hide light acne scarring, so we weren’t sure what this concealer was good for.

The formula felt thin and slick, like an oil, and would be better used to color correct large swaths of red, rather than to cover just a few blemishes. It actually spread too easily, and we couldn’t get product to stay put in just one small area. If you like your concealers denser, you definitely will not appreciate this one.

It was easy to use and available for a reasonable price, but as a concealer, we can’t say that Cezanne’s Color Control worked well.

As is usually the case with loose powder foundations and concealers, you have to apply with a brush. And as is usually the case, we couldn’t apply product to specific areas; we basically gave our entire face a dusting over. This concealer isn’t the best for touch-ups. This concealer was long wearing; we were especially impressed by how well it withstood oil. You apply it once, and it pretty much stays the same for the rest of the day. That’s why we were disappointed there wasn’t much coverage to begin with; don’t expect it to do much more than thin out your spots and freckles.

It was easy to target small areas with this concealer. It was annoying sharpening it. And even though the core was comparatively soft and transferred onto skin easily, it neither blended out well nor provided much cover.

And to top everything off, this concealer’s only available in one shade. It’s quite yellow, so it wouldn’t work well on tanned or pale skin. You’d have to be a very specific kind of person to like miu’s Pencil Concealer.

The formula was breathable and comfortable to wear. If you’re willing to give up coverage for gentler products, then you’ll appreciate AQUA AQUA’s cosmetics. The finish also came out extremely natural.

The tube was so small, we could envelop it with a single hand. You’ll probably have to restock frequently. We did like that it wasn’t bulky, but this concealer wasn’t so amazing that we’d want to carry it around at all times in the first place.

Light Coverage that Doesn’t Fade

There was just the right amount of water and oil in this formula; it set and blended easily into skin. However, it was very light coverage; it got our dark circles to fade, and that was about it. There was a subtle pearly sheen to it, though, and you might find it pretty if you like a more natural look.

However, this concealer was really long-wearing. Most breathable concealers fade quickly, but not this one. It stood up to both oil and friction. It was nice knowing that, with this concealer, we wouldn’t have to touch up throughout the day.

Who Knew Crayon Concealers Would be So Easy to Use? Won’t Last on Oily Skin, However

Crayon concealers aren’t very common, and we don’t know why. Because the tip tapered to a fine point, we could target and hide small problem areas. The core itself was soft, so it was easy to blend out.

However, because there was so much oil in the formula, it got greasy quickly. If you have oily skin, chances are this concealer is going to start melting off by the time the day’s half over. If you must use it, make sure you set it with a powder.

Both texture and packaging were unique–we’ll say that much. When we tried to blend out this concealer, little crumbs of powder appeared, and we weren’t sure what to do with them. The tube itself was also very opaque, so it was hard to tell how much product we had left.

Let’s get one thing straight. Here, “kuma” means dark circles (not bears, for any Utada Hikaru fans out there). Though this concealer did get them to fade a bit, we wouldn’t say that they were completely eradicated. The formula itself was watery and didn’t seem to set firmly into skin.

We tested the yellow beige, and it was seriously yellow. We had to layer over with foundation (or you could use a second concealer) for a more natural finish. This concealer also wasn’t that long-wearing. Everything worked to a certain extent, but overall this was an unexceptional product.

How to Apply Concealer Right

Everyone applies makeup differently, but here are some tips and tricks that worked for us.

When You Apply Concealer Depends on What Kind of Foundation You’re Using

It’s a debated topic: do you apply concealer before or after foundation? Here’s how we do it.

Liquid Foundation? Apply Concealer Afterwards

Liquid Foundation? Apply Concealer Afterwards

If you’re using liquid foundation, then your routine should flow something like this: base → color corrector → foundation → concealer. Basically, you should only be using concealer on blemishes your foundation couldn’t cover. Finish up with a setting powder if you need the extra staying power.

Powder Foundation? Apply Concealer Beforehand

Powder Foundation? Apply Concealer Beforehand

If you’re using powder foundation, then your routine should go like this: base → color corrector → concealer → foundation. If you try to apply a concealer over powder foundation, it a) won’t adhere correctly and b) will clump. Go over your blemishes with concealer first and then even out the rest of your skin with foundation.

The Secret to Using Palettes

Palettes can be difficult to use, but once you master them, the possibilities are (almost) endless.

Use the Lighter Colors as Highlighters and the Darker Colors to Blot out Spots and Acne

Use the Lighter Colors as Highlighters and the Darker to Blot out Spots and Acne

Of course, what colors you get depends on the brand and line of the product, but generally speaking, concealer palettes come with three colors: a lighter shade, a darker shade, and a color corrector.

You should use the lighter color to highlight and fix up dullness, the darker color to blot out spots and acne scars, and then if the color corrector is a bit orangey (it usually is), you use it to add a bit of blush and life to sallow areas.

But the most important thing when choosing a palette is making sure it matches your skin tone. If you’re trying out makeup at a store, try not to swatch on the back of your hand but on your jawline, which is closest to the natural, untanned color of your skin.

If You’re Shading, Go from Dark to Light

If You're Shading, Go from Dark to Light

If you want to shade or you need to layer colors, try going from dark to light. Pale tones allow for more subtle, gradual color adjustments than dark ones.

If you need to brighten up around the eyes, start off with a shade of orange to cover up dullness; then add in some brightness with a pale color over that. If you want to mix your colors before applying them to your face, try starting off with a 1:1 ratio and adjust as needed.

How to Touch up Your Makeup and Not Look Like a Cake Face

How to Touch up Your Makeup and Not Look Like a Cake Monster

Let’s face it: most makeup is going to start wearing off before the day’s up. You’ll have to touch up. And you can’t just dab some more foundation on your face and pile on products either.

If you notice your makeup’s faded in some spots, first wipe off all residue with a lotion or hand cream. Then build up that spot again from zero. Make sure you get rid of any sweat, oil, or gunk that’s accumulated as well–you want to work only with a clean canvas. Always have a lotion and some cotton pads in your makeup pouch for this purpose.

Summary

We rounded up members of our editing department, purchased the 60 most popular Japanese and Korean concealers, and tested them all.

We also ranked them, but remember that everything’s quite subjective. Depending on what you’re covering and how simple and straightforward you want your concealer to be, you may like some products more than others. We actually were in love with the palettes, which not only conceal but also contour and highlight.

No matter what your personal preferences, we hope we helped you find something that makes you feel flawless and confident.

  • Top 10 Best Foundations for Dry Skin to Buy Online
Don’t you hate it when your skin doesn’t look like skin? Those days when your foundation gets caught on every dry patch you have and separates around your lines. You flake and you shed like a snake–and while the grey winter skies are lovely and Christmas is in the air, the weather really doesn’t help things. And just because a foundation says it’s moisturizing doesn’t mean it’s actually moisturizing. And there’s so much else to worry about. Will it clog your pores? Cover your blemishes? Will it look natural on you? It’s true that everyone was born into different skin, but there a few general guidelines you should keep in mind next time you go shopping. Care to Explain to Me Why My Skin is So Dry? The term “natural moisturizing factor” (NMF) was coined in the 1950s. It refers to the natural humectants (substances that attract water), such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into our skin and form a protective barrier between us and the outside world. And NMF is like t
