Products That Didn't Make The Cut

And why they didn't quite make it.

Not Enough Coverage

Not Enough Coverage

FANCL Spots Cover Concealer was difficult to blend. When we tried, little crumbs of powder appeared, and we weren’t sure how to get them out. The tube itself was also very opaque, so it was hard to tell how much product we had left. The coverage was light. It might work on faint spots and acne scars, but nothing too heavily pigmented.

Although MUJI Concealer Under Eye and ESPRIQUE Fit Up Concealer UV had long-lasting properties, with the former having a great, balanced formula and the latter withstanding oil, the coverage was very light. Both only got dark circles to fade and thinned out spots and freckles. Note that ESORIQUE's formula was dense and didn’t spread easily.

TOUT VERT Mineral Concealer had much of the same issues. To cover pigmentation, we had to put on multiple coats, plus it took time to set, so the application wasn’t the easiest. On the other hand, the portable and compact packaging was nice, the finish was natural, and it came in two tones so both warm and cool skin tones can match.

Not Enough Coverage

INTEGRATE Spots Concealer had a pearly finish that caused light to reflect off blemishes; it wasn't enough for pigmentation or acne. It could potentially be used for the undereye area and black circles, but it is in such a small package that you may need to restock frequently.

Unlike other stick concealers, AQUA Organic Stick Concealer had light coverage and it couldn’t completely hide dark circles, spots, or acne. We tried the concealer in natural beige, but it was actually quite yellow in tone and better suited warm complexions. It is breathable, comfortable, and gentle to wear, however.

K-Palette Lasting High Cover Concealer Tint went on too thin and the color was very weak, so it didn't work well as a concealer. It also creased easily, which made it difficult to apply foundation on top. The formula was also so watery, it often separated. The packaging was the nicest part of it.

Not Enough Coverage

Another concealer that didn't quite work as advertised was COFFRET D’OR Magical Glow Stick. The color was a bit too gentle and didn't cover pigmentation. However, since it does have some shine to it, it can be used to correct dullness. We also really loved the buttery-smooth texture of it, which was gentle even on the delicate skin around our mouth and eyes.

miu Pencil Concealer had a soft core that made it easy to draw onto skin, but it didn't blend well and didn't provide much cover. It was also only available in one yellow-tinted shade that wouldn't work well for tanned or pale skin. The design of the concealer, however, made it easy to target small areas.

Another concealer that was difficult to blend was Visée Riche Perfect Concealer. It also faded so much by the end of the day, we felt we might as well have not been wearing concealer at all. It did have a creamy texture and painless application, though. It also had a nice tip cut at an angle that made it easy to cover fine areas.

Not Enough Coverage

excel Silent Glow Concealer had the issue, like many others that didn't make the cut, of being too thin with barely any coverage. It didn't hide blemishes, but, rather, covered them with glitter. It didn't spread easily, it had a firm tip that didn't skate across our skin. We did think it could be used as a highlighter, though.

Kesalan Patharan Under Eye Brightener blended easily into skin and didn’t clump or settle into creases. However, it barely concealed at all. Both the orange and yellow were very bright, so it didn’t look natural. And overall, pigmentation was so thin that this concealer neither worked as a color corrector nor as a blusher.

An Unsatisfying Formula

An Unsatisfying Formula

KOSE NOAH Stick Concealer had a thick texture that made it difficult to apply properly and made blemishes stand out more. It got cakey as soon as we used even the slightest bit of pressure and it was painfully obvious we were wearing makeup after using it.

CEZANNE Concealer Crayon UV had a tip that tapered to a fine point, so we could target and hide small problem areas. The core itself was soft, so it was easy to blend out. But there was so much oil in the formula, it got greasy quickly. It wouldn't be good for oily skin. If you must use it, make sure you set it with a powder.

Like CEZANNE, VINTORTÉ Mineral Silk Concealer also had an oily formula that added an unneeded sheen to our skin. It also took time to set and smeared every time we touched it and only came in one color, which means it won't work for everyone. It did, however, have a nice, smooth texture.

An Unsatisfying Formula

Ettusais Premium Perfect Clear Up Concealer was also oily but came with two colors: a light beige and a dark beige as a set. Even with these two colors, the concealers weren't bright enough to work on dark circles. They did, however, cover up spots and freckles. The box itself was thin and slim, but it was also hard to open.

MiMC Natural Whitening Concealer didn't have much coverage or longevity but did come in three colors meant to cover all sorts of sports and dark circles. It also came with a sponge and two small applicators; the palette itself was quite large, too.

CANMAKE Cover & Stretch Concealer UV didn’t spread far, and we were left with uneven coloring and streaking. We had to smooth everything out with a foundation afterward. It also didn’t offer enough coverage to even hide light acne scarring. It did have a felt tip that made it easy to target small areas, though, and it blended easily.

An Unsatisfying Formula

When we tried CANMAKE Color Mixing Concealer under our eyes, our dark circles faded a bit, but they weren’t completely hidden. It also oxidized over time. The formula was dense and hardened into blocks when exposed to cold temperatures. It dried out when we applied around our eyes, creasing around crow’s feet and expression lines.

Chifure Spot Make-up Cover's tip made it difficult to adjust how much product came out of it. There was always too much or too little product in the tip. To make it come out, you had to warm it up on the back of your hand to get consistent ink flow; otherwise, the concealer would go on unevenly. It also dried very quickly - too quickly to blend - and didn't offer much coverage.

INTEGRATE GRACY Concealer ~For Dullness and Freckles~ was heavily pigmented, and it got cakey fast. The formula was solid, so if you rush during application, you’ll probably end up with gaps. We couldn’t really tap it in or blend it out, but you should get a decent finish if you’re careful about drawing with it.

Works Better as Another Makeup Product

Works Better as Another Makeup Product

As is usually the case with loose powder foundations and concealers, ONLY MINERALS Medicated Concealer Foundation Acne Protector has to be applied with a brush. It didn't apply well to specific areas. This concealer isn’t the best for touch-ups and felt more like it was a second foundation. It did work well on redness, though, leaving behind only a faint trace of color.

CEZANNE Color Control Concealer also worked well to color-correct large red spots. It felt thin, slick, and a little oily. It actually spread too easily, so we couldn’t get product to stay put in just one small area.

Beautiful Skin Mineral Control Concealer was pretty difficult to use–powder kept swirling everywhere and adhering to areas that didn’t need the extra coverage. The jar was also quite large and didn’t fit easily into our makeup pouches. The product also went on thin–it didn’t so much conceal as even out skin tone.

Difficult to Use for Beginners

Difficult to Use for Beginners

IPSA Creative Concealer EX was complicated to use, since the palette came in three colors, each meant for a separate section of the face and requiring mixing and blending together the shades to match your skin tone. The product wasn’t dense, and it offered only light coverage. It offers flexibility for more experienced users, though, and spreads easily and sets well.

COSCOS Color Concealer set really well into skin, but even though we went over it with both a lighter concealer and foundation, it was hard to get the color to blend in and look natural. It was decently long-wearing and has more staying power if you go over it with a powder. But even though it worked, it had a steep learning curve.

How We Tested the Concealers

How We Tested the Concealers

We tested each of the 58 most popular Japanese and Korean concealers for the following things:

  1. Coverage
  2. Longevity
  3. Application

Test ① Coverage

Test ① Coverage
First, we looked at how much each concealer could hide.
We colored our arms blue, brown, and red, simulating dark circles, spots, and acne, respectively. We then applied concealer on top of each dab of color to check for coverage.

The Closer to Our Skin Tone It was, the Better It Covered

The Closer to Our Skin Tone It was, the Better It Covered
The more pigmented a concealer was and the closer it was to our skin tone, the more it covered. Those were pretty much the only two things that mattered, no matter what the color of blemish (red, brown, or blue).
We couldn’t get the hang of concealers that were completely different from our skin tone. Rather than choosing a color corrector that’s super green, yellow, or red, try for a subtler one that’s similar in shade to your foundation.

Test ② Longevity

Test ② Longevity
Next, we tested how long-wearing the concealers were.
We applied the concealers and then sprayed artificial sebum over them, checking how much faded. We also wiped each sample with a tissue to make sure the concealers could withstand friction.

Softer Stick Concealers Didn’t Crack or Fade

Softer Stick Concealers Didn’t Crack or Fade
Smooth stick concealers–that is, stick concealers with more oil in the formula–adhered to skin; they didn’t wear off with sebum or friction. However, stick concealers that were more dense and solid peeled off of skin easily.
Concealers that were more liquid in form blended readily into skin upon application; however, they quickly faded if we didn’t give them enough time to set.

Test ③ Application

Test ③ Application
Finally, we looked at how the concealers applied.

We tried out all the products on our face and arms. We looked at whether or not they spread easily or blended into our skin and also made note of particularly user-friendly packaging.

You Don’t Need Any Skill to Use a Stick Concealer Properly

You Don’t Need Any Skill to Use a Stick Concealer Properly
Stick concealers were easy to use, but they still came out to a nice finish. They might not have spread as readily as liquid concealers, but you can simply blend them out with your fingers.
As for packaging, we have to say that tubes weren’t very popular. You can’t apply concealer straight to your skin; you always need to transfer first to your fingers or a brush. We also had to make sure we squeezed just the right amount of product from the tube. These were all little annoyances that could be avoided.

How to Choose Japanese and Korean Concealer – Buying Guide

Here, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out a Japanese or Korean concealer.

Get Your Concealers Straight

In general, there are five main types of concealer. Some will work for you, some won’t; it all depends on what kind of finish you’re looking for, as well as your quirks and preferences.

Stick Concealer: Amazing Coverage

Stick Concealer: Amazing Coverage
If you want great coverage, then get a stick concealer. Stick concealers are convenient; throw one in your pouch for quick touch-ups on the go. The only downside to them, though, is they get cakey fast, so make sure you don’t overapply.

Below are some highlights for stick concealers.

  • Coverage: ★★★
  • Spread: ★☆☆
  • Texture: Dense
  • Best on: Cheeks and Jaw
  • Covers: Spots, Freckles, Acne Scars

Liquid Concealer: Blends Easily and is Beginner-Friendly

Liquid Concealer: Blends Easily and is Beginner-Friendly
Liquid concealers spread smoothly over skin. You can cover a lot of ground with just a small dab, so they’re perfect for hiding redness on your cheeks or far-flung freckles. Liquid concealers don’t offer a lot of coverage, though, so they won’t help with any moles or birthmarks.
However, because they go on thin, they look natural and they’re breathable to boot. Liquid concealer can come as a pen or you can apply them with a brush or sponge–you’re pretty much guaranteed to find something that’s easy for you to use.

Below are some highlights for liquid concealers.

  • Coverage: ★☆☆
  • Spread: ★★★
  • Texture: Smooth
  • Best on: Under Eye
  • Covers: Dark Circles

Cream Concealer: Offers Coverage and a Stunning Finish

Cream Concealer: Offers Coverage and a Stunning Finish
Cream concealers come out to a natural finish despite how much coverage they provide; adopting the strengths of both stick and liquid concealer. You can use them to hide entire swaths of skin or just to spot correct. Cream concealers even work well around your nose and mouth–areas that are the first to crease when you overapply.
However, you do need to apply with a brush or cotton swab. If your cream concealer doesn’t come with a brush, you’ll have to go out and get one yourself. You might also run across concealer palettes. While it is fun to blend colors, know that it’s actually quite difficult (and messy) to create the perfect shade.

Below are some highlights for cream concealers.

  • Coverage: ★★☆
  • Spread: ★★☆
  • Texture: Middling
  • Best on: Anywhere
  • Covers: Dark Circles, Spots, Freckles, Acne

Pencil Concealer: For Small Spot Corrections

Pencil Concealer: For Small Spot Corrections
For small blemishes that come in big numbers, such as freckles, try a pencil concealer. However, you can’t use pencil concealers where your skin thins out (around your eyes), and they don’t cover a lot of ground. Since pencil concealers tend to be stiff, they’ll irritate pimples, so be careful if you’re covering acne.

Below are some highlights for pencil concealers.

  • Coverage: ★★☆
  • Spread: ★☆☆
  • Texture: Stiff
  • Best on: Small Areas
  • Covers: Spots, Freckles, Acne Scars

Powder Concealer: Cover Huge Areas in One Go

Powder Concealer: Cover Huge Areas in One Go
You can’t really aim with powder concealer, so we advise getting it for evening out large patches of skin. Also, note that powder doesn’t offer a lot of coverage–most people who like powder concealers are either going for a more natural look or are into organic cosmetics.

Below are some highlights for powder concealers.

  • Coverage: ★☆☆
  • Spread: ★★★
  • Texture: Powder
  • Best on: Your Whole Face
  • Covers: Dark Circles, Spots, Freckles, Acne

Understand Different Colors and Textures and What They’re Meant to Conceal

Concealers can be thick or thin and come in multiple colors. Every density, color, and texture is meant to cover a different kind of blemish–think about what you’re trying to hide.

Try Using Different Products to Divide and Conquer Acne

Try Using Different Products to Divide and Conquer Acne
Beige and yellow tones are usually good for acne. Basically, you want something as close to your skin tone as possible.
If you have fading scars sprinkled all over your face, then try tamping down the redness with a green color corrector. If you want to hone in on just a few acne scars, then try a liquid or pencil concealer. Just don’t use pencil concealer on inflamed pimples, as it can be irritating.
Because you usually need a long-wearing and high coverage concealer for acne, look for a denser product. Just make sure it isn’t too thick, as that will cause a whole other set of problems.

Go One Shade Brighter for Dark Circles to Bring Light to Your Under-Eye

Go One Shade Brighter for Dark Circles to Bring Light to Your Under-Eye
There are three main types of under-eye circles. Brown circles are usually the product of pigmentation or UV rays, and they’re best covered with a beige or yellow concealer.
If you haven’t been getting enough sleep or your eyes are otherwise tired, you probably have blue circles; these are best corrected with orange or pink concealers, as they give you a more healthy, flushed complexion. Or you can use a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation.
Go One Shade Brighter for Dark Circles to Bring Light to Your Under-Eye
Black circles are usually the result of sagging skin under your eyes; try using a beige or ocher concealer for these.
Make sure your concealer isn’t too thick. The skin around your eyes is constantly moving; if you go for too much coverage, chances are you’ll experience some creasing. Liquid and cream products are both flexible and work best for dark circles.

Pick Something One Shade Darker for Spots and Freckles

Pick Something One Shade Darker for Spots and Freckles
If you’re looking to cover spots and freckles, look for something that’s identical in color to your skin or just a bit darker. If you try for a concealer that’s too light, you’ll actually end up highlighting your problem areas. When choosing a shade, it’s always a good idea to check the product against your current foundation.
As for texture, it depends on where you’re covering. If you’re applying to larger areas of skin, try a softer stick or cream concealer; for spot corrections, go for pencil concealer.

Figure Out Which Concealers are Long-Wearing and Don’t Crease

Figure Out Which Concealers are Long-Wearing and Don’t Crease
If you find a concealer formulated for your skin type, then it’ll be less likely to fade. A concealer’s texture is usually determined by how much oil is in the formula. So if you yourself have oily skin, try a thicker product; if you have dry skin, try a more liquidy product.
Just know that if you leave your makeup on for long enough, it’s going to move, whether because your skin is drying out or greasing up. So no matter what concealer you choose to use in the morning, it’s always nice to have a stick or pencil product in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

How to Apply Concealer Right

Everyone applies makeup differently, but here are some tips and tricks that worked for us.

When You Apply Concealer Depends on What Kind of Foundation You’re Using

It’s a debated topic: do you apply concealer before or after foundation? Here’s how we do it.

Apply Concealer After Liquid Foundations

Apply Concealer After Liquid Foundations
If you’re using liquid foundation, then your routine should flow something like this: base → color corrector → foundation → concealer. Basically, you should only be using concealer on blemishes your foundation couldn’t cover. Finish up with a setting powder if you need the extra staying power.

Use Concealer Before Powder Foundations

Use Concealer Before Powder Foundations
If you’re using powder foundation, then your routine should go like this: base → color corrector → concealer → foundation. If you try to apply a concealer over powder foundation, it won’t adhere correctly and will clump. Go over your blemishes with concealer first and then even out the rest of your skin with foundation.

How to Use a Palette

Palettes can be difficult to use, but once you master them, the possibilities are (almost) endless.

Use the Lighter Colors as Highlighters and the Darker Colors to Blot Out Spots and Acne

Use the Lighter Colors as Highlighters and the Darker Colors to Blot Out Spots and Acne
Of course, what colors you get depends on the brand and line of the product, but generally speaking, concealer palettes come with three colors: a lighter shade, a darker shade, and a color corrector.
You should use the lighter color to highlight and fix up dullness, the darker color to blot out spots and acne scars, and then if the color corrector is a bit orangey, you can use it to add a bit of blush and life to sallow areas.
But the most important thing when choosing a palette is making sure it matches your skin tone. If you’re trying out makeup at a store, try not to swatch on the back of your hand but on your jawline, which is closest to the natural, untanned color of your skin.

If You’re Shading, Go From Dark to Light

If You’re Shading, Go From Dark to Light
If you want to shade or you need to layer colors, try going from dark to light. Pale tones allow for more subtle, gradual color adjustments than dark ones.
If you need to brighten up around the eyes, start off with a shade of orange to cover up dullness; then add in some brightness with a pale color over that. If you want to mix your colors before applying them to your face, try starting off with a 1:1 ratio and adjust as needed.

How to Touch Up Your Makeup and Not Look Cakey

How to Touch Up Your Makeup and Not Look Cakey
Unfortunately, most makeup is going to start wearing off before the day’s up, so you’ll have to touch up. And you can’t just dab some more foundation on your face and pile on products either.
If you notice that your makeup’s faded in some spots, first wipe off all residue with a lotion or hand cream. Then build up that spot again from zero. Make sure you get rid of any sweat, oil, or gunk that’s accumulated as well–you want to work only with a clean canvas. Always have a lotion and some cotton pads in your makeup pouch for this purpose.

Summary

Remember that our rankings were decided through testing, but even this is quite subjective. Depending on what you’re covering and how simple and straightforward you want your concealer to be, you may like some products more than others. We actually were in love with the palettes, which not only conceal but also contour and highlight.

No matter what your personal preferences, we hope we helped you find something that makes you feel flawless and confident.

It’s a buzzword in Japan: translucence. It’s similar to Korea’s glass skin–skin so pure that it’s nearly transparent, resembling layers of frosted glass. In the Western world, think "glow" or "dewy finish."
