10 Best Tried and True Japanese Emulsions in 2022 (Cosmetics Consultant-Reviewed)

There's a crucial element in the Japanese skincare routine: emulsions. Emulsions, which are sometimes referred to as Japanese face milks, Japanese milky lotions, or sometimes just as Japanese moisturizers, are important–they are, if you remember, the lid that seals your toner in. And, just like in America, in Japan, we have our high-end brands like Shiseido's Clé de Peau Beauté, drugstore brands like Kao's Curél, and more.

We thought it was high time someone separated the wheat from the chaff. That’s why we ordered the 10 most popular moisturizers and face lotions from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as Amazon, Rakuten, and @cosme) and tested them all for the following:

1. Moisturizing ability
2. Ingredients
3. Feel

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese moisturizers and emulsions. We also talk about the difference between lotion and cream at the very end of the article–be sure not to miss it.

What's an Emulsion? What’s the Difference Between Emulsions and Creams?

What's an Emulsion? What’s the Difference Between Emulsions and Creams?

If you've looked up anything about the Japanese skincare routine, you'll certainly have stumbled across emulsions. Known as nyu-eki (乳液) in Japanese, they're also often translated as emulsions, milky lotions, face milks, or simply called Japanese moisturizer.

Now, you might be wondering what the difference is between emulsions and cream.

In short, the greatest difference between emulsions and cream is oil content. Both are largely made up of water and oil, but cream contains more oil, while emulsions contain more water.

Therefore, at night, when you should be going for heavier skincare, we recommend using creams; while on busy mornings, when you need something that’s going to absorb quickly into the skin, use lotion. After all, what kind of product you need always depends on your particular situation.

By incorporating an emulsion into your morning skincare routine, you'll see better results when applying base makeup after that, since your skin will have absorbed an appropriate amount of oil.

If you're particularly concerned about dryness, use an emulsion and a cream during your nighttime skincare routine to lock in moisture while you're asleep.

How We Tested the Emulsions

How We Tested the Emulsions

We tried out each of the 10 products and tested them for the following:

  1. Moisturizing ability
  2. Ingredients
  3. Feel

Each product was then given a score out of 5 for each test. Final scores were calculated based on average scores.

Test ①: Moisturizing Ability

Test ①: Moisturizing Ability

First, let's talk about moisturizing ability, which is definitely one of the crucial elements in choosing the right emulsion.

To test this, we applied a prescribed amount of product on the inside of our tester’s arms and measured moisture levels using a special machine known as a Corneometer. We then compared the amount of moisture in the skin before applying to the amount of moisture in the skin 3 hours after application and rated each product on a scale of 1 to 5.

Test ②: Ingredients

Test ②: Ingredients

Next, for our ingredients test.

We had our expert, Mirai, an R&D specialist at a major cosmetics manufacturer, check each of the products for the following:

  • Whether or not a product has moisturizing ingredients or ingredients that act as emollients
  • Whether or not the ingredients are gentle on the skin

Some products that we tested are classified as quasi-drugs, which is a unique Japanese classification of products that sits in between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Manufacturers are not obligated by law to label all their ingredients for quasi-drugs, so Mirai only evaluated those products based on what was written on the label.

Test ③: Feel

Test ③: Feel

Finally, we examined each product for how they felt to use, a point we felt was important considering you'll need to moisturize daily.

We asked two of our Japanese editorial staff to apply the product on their arms and evaluate how they felt to use based on the following points:

  • Whether or not the texture is sticky or if it blends well with the skin
  • If the product has an unpleasant fragrance or not
  • If the container is easy to use or not

How to Choose a Japanese Emulsion

Generally speaking, the points you need to know regarding how to choose an emulsion is similar to how to choose a face cream, body milk, or other moisturizers. For a detailed buying guide on face creams, which also apply to emulsions used on the face, see the link below.

Remember, the main difference in emulsions and creams is the ratio of water and oil, and they otherwise use similar, if not the same ingredients!

When and How to Use Emulsions

When and How to Use Emulsions

When it comes to applying skincare, it's generally advised to go from lighter to heavier textures after you wash your face. Generally, this would mean you'd start with a moisturizing toner, move on to a serum, then add more moisture with an emulsion, and lock it all in with a cream.

Occasionally, though, there are some emulsions that are meant to be applied first, immediately after washing your face. While this doesn't apply to any of the products featured in this article, you may want to do a little research for other products.

Finally, there are some products that recommend you use a cotton pad to apply. If a product recommends this, make sure you dispense enough liquid onto the cotton pad to avoid excessive friction from the pad.

Have You Got All the Steps of Your Skincare Routine Down?

It’s not a routine if it doesn’t have multiple steps, right? Japanese skincare often starts with a cleanser, then facewash, then toner, essence, lotion, and finally cream. Learn more about these other products below.
