Top 45 Best Japanese Eyeliners to Buy Online 2019 – Tried and True!

Top Best 45 Japanese Eyeliners to Buy Online 2019 - Tried and True!

If you want bigger eyes, get eyeliner. If you want sensual eyes, intense eyes, eyes of any kind, get eyeliner. Eyeliner’s a big part of any look. And we’d venture so far as to say it’s extra important here in Japan where–we admit it–our eyes tend to run a bit… small. That’s why our cosmetics companies–including Heroine Make, shu uemura, and (even) Daiso–are churning out products.

Of course, with a great number of products comes a great amount of choice, and with a great amount of choice comes confusion (not an Uncle Ben quote). That’s why we ordered the 45 most popular eyeliners from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as @cosme, Amazon, and Rakuten) and tested for the following:

  1. Finish
  2. Application
  3. Smudge Resistance
  4. Ease of Removal

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese eyeliners.

How to Choose Japanese Eyeliner – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the eyeliners, but before that, we want to introduce four things you should look out for when picking out Japanese eyeliner.

① Get Eyeliner that’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want

There’s three main types of eyeliner, and they all perform differently. So, the first order of business is to talk about what kind of finish you want.

Pencil for a Soft, Natural Finish

For a Soft, Natural Finish, Get Pencil

There are two different types of pencil liners※1 as well–the kind you have to sharpen, like your traditional No2 pencil, and the kind you twist out, like those newfangled mechanical pencils.

You use eyeliner pencils to fill in the gaps between your lashes, which brings out the shape of your eyes. Because they blend and blur easily, they come out to a soft, natural finish. Should you slip up during application, you can clean up with a Q-tip and start over, which makes pencil liners ideal for beginners.

Pencil liners, by their very nature, smudge and fade easily. To make up for this weakness, there’s been a recent spate of eyeliner pencils with cream centers made to withstand both sweat and oil. They adhere more closely to skin than a traditional pencil does; they also have softer cores, which helps them slide smoothly onto skin.

The only thing is, cream pencils will transfer with the slightest touch. Unless you have precise control over your movements, you might want to buy one with a finer tip so the eyeliner doesn’t go on too thick.

※1 ペンシルタイプ: pencil eyeliners (lit. pencil type)

Liquid for a Crisp, Bold Look

Liquid for a Crisp, Bold Look

Liquid eyeliner※2 gleams. It goes on in distinct, vivid colors and throws your eyes into sharp relief.

Liquid eyeliner tends to have a fine tip, which makes it easier to add wings to the corners of your eyes for the classic cat eye look. It also brings some dramatic flair to your eye makeup. And when the tip of the liner is thin and supple, it makes it easier to trace the shape of your eye.

However, though liquid liner is relatively easy to use, it doesn’t blur or come off as easily as pencil eyeliners. If you mess up, it takes a while to fix (most people try to fix uneven liquid liner by just thickening the line, and then they end up with what looks like monster caterpillars sitting on their eyelids). If you’ve an unsteady hand, be prepared to put in time and practice.

※2 リキッドタイプ: liquid eyeliner (lit. liquid type)

Gel to Not Look like a Panda

Gel to Not Look like a Panda

Gel liner is similar to liquid liner. It’s best for filling in gaps between your lashes so you look wide- and bright-eyed.

Gel liner can come in a pot or as the core of a pencil. It’s water- and sebum-resistant, and it doesn’t budge after application. It’s pretty much a godsend for people whose eyeliner usually smudges, either because their eyes are constantly watering (due to allergies) or because they have oily skin.

Not only does gel liner transfer easily onto skin, it’s soft, the colors are crisp, and it’s dewy. The only thing is you have to apply gel-in-a-pot much as you would paint with watercolor–by first dipping the included brush into it and extracting just the right amount of product. It can get difficult, so we recommend trying it out first on the back of your hand.

※3 ジェルタイプ: gel eyeliner (lit. gel type)

② Different Colors Lead to Different Impressions

Different Colors Lead to Different Impressions

Color can also change the feel of your eyes. Brown makes for a softer, more natural look; black makes your eyes look sharper, more intense.

We’d say that, not only in Japan, but in much of the world, these two colors are the most common, but they are certainly not all that exist. There’s as many colors available as there are fish in the sea. Pink and orange are poppy and lend energy to your look; navy and maroon are more toned down, classy enough for office wear.

③ Get Eyeliner that Doesn’t Smear and Doesn’t Fade

Get Eyeliner that Doesn't Smear and Doesn't Fade

If you sweat easily or if allergies constantly have your eyes watering, then look for waterproof eyeliner※4. If you have oily skin and secrete a lot of sebum around the eyes, then look for smudge-proof eyeliner※5. That way your makeup won’t smear, staying nice and crisp until deep into the night.

There’s also a bunch of eyeliners that are both water- and smudge-proof, so be sure to check the packaging.

※4 ウォータープルーフ: waterproof

※5 スマッジプルーフ: smudge-proof

④ Get Eyeliner that Comes off Easily (When You Want It to)

Get Eyeliner that Comes off Easily (When You Want It to)

Your skin is thinnest around your eyes–and it creases and reacts to the slightest irritant. When you rub at your eyes to remove eyeliner, you’re paving the way for hyperpigmentation and the dull, sunken-eyed look. So it’s important you find a eyeliner that’s easy to remove.

There is now eyeliner that’s designed to slide off with hot water; not only is it gentler on the skin, it also can shorten your nighttime routine. Unfortunately, most eyeliners of this type also smudge easily. We recommend looking for smudge-resistant waterproof eyeliner that also comes off with hot water (it exists).

We then tested for each of the following things:

Test ①: Finish
Test ②: Application
Test ③: Smudge Resistance
Test ④: Ease of Removal

Test ①: Finish

Finish

The first thing we tested for was finish.

We had a makeup artist apply all the eyeliners onto members from our editing department. We then looked for things like vividness of color, nice smooth lines, and graded each product on a five-step scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: We were Partial to Fast-Drying Liquid Eyeliner

The Big Takeaway: We were Partial to Fast-Drying Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid eyeliners were the most consistent in giving us a clean, crisp line and vivid colors. Gel eyeliners were a close second.

Liquid liners went on smoothly and in strong, dense colors; they threw our eyes into sharp relief, making them appear far larger. Gel liners were rich in color and gleamed, resulting in a more elegant finish. By the way, products that earned an A+ on this test were also so quick-drying that we could blink right after application and nothing would transfer.

On the other hand, pencil eyeliners came out in gentle colors and the lines they left behind were faint. Their effects are more subtle, so if you use liner in the hopes that it’ll make your eyes appear far larger, you may end up disappointed. However, when we used them on our members blessed with naturally large eyes, it gave them a pretty, doll-like finish.

Test ②: Application

Application

Next, we looked for eyeliners that were easy to use.

Specifically, we were checking for whether color transferred smoothly, whether it hurt to apply, or whether the liner was more suited to the more clumsy or only the adept.

The Big Takeaway: Softer Tips Made for More Control

The Big Takeaway: Softer Tips Made for More Control

It didn’t matter whether the eyeliner was liquid, pencil, or gel–if the tip was soft and allowed us to adjust the thickness of a stroke simply by how much pressure we put on the barrel, it earned an A+ on this test.

More specifically, we liked liquid eyeliners with tips that had some resilience to them but were still supple. We liked pencil eyeliners with tips that were more elliptical than round so that less of the core touched our eyelids; this meant we were able to smoothly draw out a thin line.

KATE’s Super Sharp Liner EX, by the way, was made in conjunction with Pentel. It’ll probably give you the thinnest line you can get out of a eyeliner; however, add in just a bit more pressure and the line thickens right up. It’s eyeliners like this that open up all sorts of possibilities.

Test ③: Smudge Resistance

Smudge Resistance

Next, we tested for smudge resistance.

We applied all of the eyeliner onto a board meant to simulate human skin; we then soaked cotton swabs in artificial sebum and rubbed them over each sample. Finally, we graded the products on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Pencil Eyeliners are Weak to Both Friction and Oil, so You Shouldn’t Expect Them to Stick around

The Big Takeaway: Pencil Eyeliners are Weak to Both Friction and Oil, so You Shouldn't Expect Them to Stick around

The eyeliners that smudged the most were, in the end, pencil. Some started fading when we had barely touched them with the cotton swabs. When it comes to staying power, pencil can’t even be compared to liquid and gel eyeliners.

However, pencil eyeliners that were waterproof, such as Rimmel’s Exaggerate Creamy Eyeliner WP and Visee’s Crayon Eye Color, did resist smudging, and makeup retained its shape throughout testing.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a long-wearing pencil eyeliner, make sure it’s waterproof first.

Test ④: Ease of Removal

Ease of Removal

Finally, we looked at how easy the eyeliners were to remove.

We swatched the eyeliners on our forearm and then went at each patch with a makeup remover wipe. We then considered how gentle (or rough) of a cleaning the products needed and graded them on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Film Eyeliner, which Comes off with Warm Water, Disappeared with Just One Swipe

The Big Takeaway: Film Eyeliner, which Comes off with Warm Water, Disappeared with Just One Swipe

It makes sense that what we call “film type※6” eyeliners in Japan–eyeliners that come off with warm water–would be easier to remove than your traditional liner, but what surprised us was how great the difference was.

These eyeliners didn’t have to be rubbed off; instead, they loosened and easily peeled off, like an old band-aid or a bit of film (from whence the liner got its name). The products that stood out the most were Flowfushi’s Mote Liner and the Love Liner Liquid, both of which slid off after one wipe. Not only is that better for your skin, it’ll also shorten your nighttime skincare routine.

On the other hand, waterproof eyeliners were the most stubborn.

It didn’t matter the type of eyeliner; waterproof formulas repelled both water and oil, which made them difficult to remove. There were some we had to scrub at until our arms turned red. If you have sensitive skin, only use waterproof eyeliner on days you need it, such as for beach outings or during allergy season.

Not the Best for Daily Use. Gives You a Mean Cat Eye, Though

Addiction’s brush was actually too soft, making it difficult to draw a smooth, even line. We wouldn’t use it on a day-to-day basis. It came out to a nice color, but the formula was thick and wet and took forever to dry; there’s a good chance that this eyeliner will transfer onto other parts of your eyelids.

However, it was perfect for drawing the little flick at the end of a cat eye. We’d recommend this eyeliner only for the corner of your eyes and only when you’re doing cat eyes. Yes, we know that that’s an oddly specific reason to own an eyeliner, so Addiction landed at the bottom of our rankings.

Astoundingly Easy to Use, but is Also Oddly Both Weak to Friction and Difficult to Remove

The brush itself was short, which kept the eyeliner steady as we were drawing out our line; you could be a total butterfingers and still get a thin, even line out of this product. However, unfortunately, it smeared when we barely even brushed it with a cotton swab, so it will probably turn you into a panda.

In addition, even though it smeared easily, it wouldn’t come off, leaving behind residue when we tried to remove it.

Color’s a Bit Thin… Great if You Want a More Natural Look, but That’s Not the Point of Liquid Eyeliners, Now is It?

This eyeliner was more grey than black. It went on so thin, you wouldn’t have believed it was a liquid eyeliner, giving us just a subtle shadow around our eyes.

We liked that it had both a thin and a thick tip, which you can alternate between depending on where you’re painting and what you’re feeling. Still, it isn’t going to intensify your eyes.

Watery Formula that Doesn’t Adhere to the Skin. Smudging Gets Especially Bad around the Corners of the Eyes

Because the formula was so watery, drawing with it was smooth sailing. However, kingdom’s liquid eyeliner didn’t adhere to the skin; it started fading and smearing as we were drawing with it. It’s supposedly both water- and smudge-proof, but we didn’t see either of those features at play during testing, so don’t get your hopes up.

This eyeliner didn’t smear; it straight-up disappeared. It’s going to require multiple touch-ups throughout the day. Takes Forever to Dry, so When You Blink, this Eyeliner’s All but Guaranteed to Transfer

This took an eternity to dry, so when we blinked, we were punished with a black smudge in the middle of our eyelid. Now, it didn’t smear when it was dry–but chances are, if you have monolids or hooded eyelids, this eyeliner is going to transfer. Then you can kiss that nice finish goodbye.

The brush had a good amount of firmness to it, so it was easy to draw out a thin line. However, it took time and patience. This eyeliner is not suited for busy mornings or people who get frustrated easily.

The Bristles on This Eyeliner are So Delicate, the Ends Start Coming Apart… Though We Liked that It was Easy to Remove and Gentle on Skin

The tip’s a special brush, known as “Yamato Takumi Fude,” which was, according to Flowfushi’s site, born from the marriage between tradition and cutting-edge science in the Kumano and Nara regions. It was pleasant to write with, but it was so delicate that the tips tended to split up.

Before use, try warming up the brush on the back of your hand to get ink flowing and the ends to stick together. We liked that it was easy to remove, however. We’d recommend this if you want an eyeliner that’s gentle on the skin above all else.

Like Filling in Your Lashes with a Felt Pen. Will Make Your Eyes Appear Larger, but Sucks that It’s So Hard to Remove

KATE’s liquid liner had a felt tip, which is rare among liquid eyeliners. We basically stamped it along our eyelids and filled in all the gaps between our lashes without missing a spot. It really opened up our eyes. It was dewy and a rich black, so we gave it an A+ for finish. If only they could do something about how hard it is to remove…

It wouldn’t come off until we rubbed our arms raw. If you care about your skin, you should reserve this eyeliner only for special occasions.

Bristles were Just Firm Enough to Draw Beautiful Lines. But Color’s So Thin, It Looks like the Eyeliner’s Already Started Fading

The bristles had body, but they were also supple enough to bend along the curve of the eye, giving us a beautiful line. However, the black was thin and rather diluted-looking. We didn’t like that we didn’t get the richness color usually associated with liquid eyeliners.

The finish was too natural; we didn’t see the point of getting a liquid liner that’s quite this subtle.

This eyeliner adhered to the skin, so even when we sprayed it with artificial sebum and rubbed at it with a cotton swab, its vivid black color was going strong. It also dried as soon as we tried it on, so we didn’t have to worry about smudging.

However, the brush was too soft. That made it easier to slip up during application, and because the eyeliner was so long-wearing, we couldn’t rub bits of it off and fix up any mistakes. It also was supposed to come off with warm water. We tested that claim and found it to be false.

Just the very tip of the brush was supple and the bristles were clustered closely together, so it left behind a very thin line. The color also didn’t come out too strong. It didn’t look like we were wearing loads of makeup, and it made our eyes appear larger in a very natural way. Depending on your preferences, you might even find the color too thin.

It got even thinner when we sprayed it with sebum, so this is another eyeliner that will require some touch-ups. However, that also meant it was easy to remove. It peeled off by itself without any rubbing, so you can be sure the 1 Day Tattoo will be kind to your skin.

A Finish You’d Never Believe Comes from a Dollar Shop Eyeliner. Definitely Worth a Try

Who’d believe a Daiso (a 100-yen–about a dollar–store chain in Japan) cosmetic made our top 10 list? This eyeliner felt more like a felt-tipped pen than a brush; it was easy to use, filling in gaps between our lashes and tracing along our waterline. The color was deep, and it was difficult to get a very thin line; you’d like this liner only if you wanted a bold look.

It did fade a little around the corners of the eyes, but for a 216 yen (~$2) eyeliner, it was pretty impressive. Dries Immediately and Doesn’t Budge at All. Perfect for the Beach or Pool

Let’s talk about the good stuff first. LB’s eyeliner had a beautiful, rich color and was smudge-resistant. It didn’t matter whether we subjected it to sweat or friction–this eyeliner didn’t budge. It also dried quickly. However, it didn’t come off until we had rubbed our arms red with the makeup remover wipe, so we wouldn’t recommend this eyeliner for sensitive skin.

Use it instead at the beach or the pool, where it’s important you wear long-lasting eye makeup. The tip, by the way, was quite firm, which made it easy to handle, even for people who weren’t used to putting on makeup. It doesn’t dry instantaneously; give it a little time to sit, and it’ll adhere more firmly onto the skin, making for a better finish.

The color was neither too deep or pale; it gave us larger looking eyes in a very natural way. For a more subtle look, we applied just one coat; we were also able to layer over it for a more vivid color. The ink itself was light and smooth; the tip of the brush simply slid over our skin.

It was also quick-drying and didn’t transfer. However, the bristles themselves were quite soft, so we worried that, over time, they could lose their cohesiveness and start splitting apart.

Our hair and makeup artist proclaimed that, out of all the eyeliners she’s worked with in the past, this one was the easiest to use. There was just enough flex to the tip, making it a piece of cake to produce a super thin line. It was also a vivid and dewy black, which brought out our eyes.

Furthermore, because the body of the eyeliner is dented, it made sure our hands didn’t slip; this ensured we got a straight, even line. Try this one out if you’re clumsy and bad at putting on eyeliner, or if you need something that will properly fill in all the gaps between your lashes.

No Complaints about the Finish or How Easy it Is to Use. The Liquid Eyeliner We Think is Best

Heroine Make’s Liquid Eyeliner did well on all of our tests. It had a rich color that enhanced our eyes, giving them more of a dramatic flair. The brush tip was long and (we feared too) flexible, but it gave us a thin, even line from the inner corner all the way to the outer corner of our eyes and was surprisingly easy to use.

As for smudge resistance, we’d say nothing beat this eyeliner in how water- and sebum-proof it is. It didn’t even come off with rubbing. We then thought it’d be impossible to remove, but it only took a few gentle passes with our makeup remover wipe to get rid of all residue.

It’s available in four colors and can be used in any situation. If you’re still confused as to which liquid eyeliner to get, we seriously want you to give this one a try.

Fun to Apply (Feels like Drawing with a Crayon), but the Glitter Doesn’t Sparkle and Ends up Looking like Gaps

This eyeliner was smooth, and color transferred without much pressure or effort on our side. One of our editors couldn’t stop talking about how fun it was to fill in her upper lash line. However, we didn’t like how the glitter didn’t actually, well, glitter; instead, it weakened the rich color of the eyeliner, which led to a low score for finish.

There was a brush on the other side of this eyeliner. We tried to use it to blend out the line, but we ended up just erasing it. It looks like it’ll take time to get used to this brush, and until then, you’ll likely end up with gaps in your makeup.

Wears off at Even the Lightest Touch…

The core of this pencil was cream and it slid smoothly over skin–it made for a stress-free application. However, that’s where the good stuff ended. All we had to do was gently brush it with our fingers, and the eyeliner started wearing off.

We liked that it had the vivid color typically associated with gel eyeliners. However, if you want to keep that color on your face, you’ll need numerous touch-ups.

Might be the Worst when It Comes to Smudge Resistance. Color Doesn’t Apply Evenly Either, Making for a Subpar Finish

This was a pencil through and through–the barrel felt steady in our hands and was easy to control. However, the eyeliner tended to ball up and drop off in places. It also didn’t go on smoothly; it tugged at one of our editors’ eyelids so much that it hurt.

But, perhaps the worst thing was its complete lack of water resistance. This pencil may be cheap, but that’s still not any reason to get it.

This was a twisty pencil and easy to draw with. But even though we got a nice, thin line, it didn’t set, which means that when we blinked, the eyeliner immediately smudged.

It is waterproof and resistant to water and sweat; however, it didn’t stand up to friction, so you still may be left with a black eye or two. Perhaps you could use it right up against your lash line…

Easy to Remove, but Smudges, Leaving You with a Threadbare Line and Panda Eyes

This pencil won SNS fame because it’s cheap and useable. However, it smudged easily, which forced us to lower its score. Yes, it’s great that it was easy to remove and gentle on skin, but it’s hard to leave the house when the finish is that bad.

The core was also hard, which caused the color to fade in and out during application. If you wanted the eyeliner to stay a single shade throughout, you’d have to add on multiple layers.

Elliptical Tip is Versatile–Go for Thick Lines, Thin Lines, or Anything in Between

This one stood out for how easy it was to use. The tip was elliptical, so just by changing the angle at which you apply the eyeliner, you can go for either a thick or thin line. It’s great for adding wings to the corners of your eyes.

The only thing was the core kept snapping. Don’t extend the liner too far out of the barrel.

A Gentle Eyeliner. Shame that It Doesn’t Blend into Skin

Out of all the pencil eyeliners we tested, this one was the easiest to remove. We didn’t even have to apply any pressure–we just gently went over it with a makeup remover wipe and it came off. You won’t have to worry about this one damaging your skin.

The core had just the right amount of firmness and slid smoothly across skin. However, the eyeliner didn’t really settle; it just looked like it was sitting on top of our eyelids. It was also hard to get it to come to a point at the corners of our eyes. You might want to save this eyeliner for certain tasks, such as filling in the gaps between your lashes.

The Tip’s Denser and Harder than You’d Expect. Might be Hard to Get a Smooth Line

Smooth is in the name of this eyeliner, but it actually got caught on skin a lot. Our volunteer from the editing department said “It feels like I’m being drawn on with a normal pencil.” The color came out to a natural black; however, if you’re going for a dramatic look that will make your eyes pop, you might feel like there’s something missing.

It was easy to remove and resisted both oil and friction to a certain extent, so it’s not like there aren’t any benefits to using this eyeliner. However, when we thought about how light the color was, we felt like this is one product that should be confined to the lash line.

Pencil eyeliner is easy to blend out; on the flip side of the coin, it smudges easily. However, this eyeliner was waterproof and set quickly into the skin, keeping smudging to a minimum. The color didn’t come out that vivid, but it did make our eyes appear larger in a natural way.

This eyeliner claimed to be superfine, but it actually wouldn’t come to a point. It also wouldn’t come off when we wanted it to, so you’ll have to get a good eye makeup remover and gently cleanse your eyelids at the end of the day.

How to Get Better at Applying Eyeliner

We get it–eyeliner’s hard to use. Here are some tips and tricks from our very own makeup artist.

When Using Liquid Eyeliner, You Need to Steady Your Dominant Hand

When Using Liquid Eyeliner, You Need to Steady Your Dominant Hand

Most liquid eyeliners have soft, thin tips that can detect a quiver from a mile away. To get an even line, rest either a finger or the side of your hand on your cheek and steady your hand.

Next, you may be tempted to finish up your eyeliner in a single stroke. Don’t. It’s easy away to get carried away by momentum, and next thing you know, you have little lines protruding all over the place. Apply eyeliner by putting together a chain of short strokes.

You also get a lot of creases towards the inner corner of your eye. When applying eyeliner there, try lifting the skin diagonally upwards–towards the center of your brow–which will give you a smooth canvas to work on.

When Using Pencil or Gel Eyeliner, Dot in the Gaps Between Your Lashes and Your Eyes Will Appear Larger

When Using Pencil or Gel Eyeliner, Dot in the Gaps Between Your Lashes and Your Eyes Will Appear Larger

By filling in your lash line, you can accentuate your iris and your pupils. Slightly lift up your eyelid with your finger; then draw a line by connecting 1 or 2 mm dots.

When going for a more natural look, you can gently blend out the eyeliner with either an included brush or Q-tip. If you don’t want to actually have the line fade out, you can also add eye shadow on top to achieve a more gentle gradation.

If you find it hard to get your eyeliner to come to a point at the outer corner of your eyes when using pencil, try drawing from the outside in (towards the bridge of your nose). It should make it a lot easier.

To Prevent Smudging, Get Rid of Excess Oil Before Application and Finish up with Setting Powder After

To Prevent Smudging, Get Rid of Excess Oil Before Application and Finish up with Setting Powder After

Excess sebum is often the culprit behind panda eyes. Before applying eyeliner, clean up around your eyes with a cotton pad or tissue. After you’ve applied eyeliner, pat it down with a setting powder. Add some powder to your lower lash line to prevent any color from transferring.

If it does smear, don’t just pile on more eyeliner. Use something with a fine tip–like a cotton swab–and remove everything, including your foundation. Then reapply everything, starting with your foundation. It’s a pain, but you’ll look more gorgeous for it.

Summary

We rounded up experts and members of our editing department, purchased the 45 most popular Japanese eyeliners, and tested them all.

Your eyes are a big part of how you look. Doing something as simple as switching out one eyeliner for another–making your eyes appear sweeter or bolder, your look more subtle or more dramatic–can transform you. So next time you’re looking to try something new, make sure you keep this article in the back of your mind.
