How We Tested the Eyeliners

How We Tested the Eyeliners

We gathered 9 popular Japanese eyeliners from Amazon, Rakuten, and Kakaku.com,

and tested them for their finish, smudge resistance, ease of removal, and application.

Test ① Finish

The first thing we tested for was finish.
Test ① Finish

We had a makeup artist apply all the eyeliners onto members from our editing department. We then looked for things like vividness of color and nice smooth lines and graded each product on a five-step scale ranging from 1.0 to 5.0.

When using eyeliner, we felt what was most important was the finish. We had professional makeup artist Atsushi Takatori test all eyeliner pencils and had him evaluate products on a scale of 1 to 5, and comment on their finish based on his professional perspective.

Test ② Smudge Resistance

Test ② Smudge Resistance
Next, we tested for smudge resistance.

We applied all of the eyeliner onto a board meant to simulate human skin, and let them dry for 30 seconds. We then applied two sprays of water onto the eyeliner, and let them dry again for 30 seconds more.

Next, we rubbed cotton swabs once over each sample to visually check how much color was lost on the board. We then re-applied the eyeliner, swapped the water spray for horse oil, and repeated the process to check for oil resistance.

All products were rated out of 5, with products that didn't lose color either with water or oil getting a higher score.

Test ③ Ease of Removal

Test ③ Ease of Removal

Next, we looked at how easy the eyeliners were to remove.

We applied the eyeliners on our forearm and then rubbed them with a water-based, gel-based, and oil-based makeup remover, going over the eyeliner once with our fingers to check how easily they were removed.

We then graded all products on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0, with products being able to be removed with all types of makeup remover getting a score of 5.0.

Test ④ Application

Test ④ Application

Finally, we looked for eyeliners that were easy to use.

In order to get varying eye shapes, we gathered three testers and had them check how easy the eyeliners were to use. Specifically, we had them test how much friction each eyeliner had, how easy the eyeliners were to apply, and the firmness of the cap and tip.

We then had our testers grade and comment on each eyeliner, with products that were able to be applied smoothly and comfortably getting a top score of 5.0.

How to Choose Japanese Eyeliner – Buying Guide

Now that you know how we tested and compared all the eyeliners, we want to introduce things you should look out for when picking out Japanese eyeliner.

Pick an Eyeliner That Doesn’t Smear and Doesn’t Fade

Choose a Waterproof Eyeliner to Prevent Smearing From Water and Sweat

Choose a Waterproof Eyeliner to Prevent Smearing From Water and Sweat
If you sweat easily or if allergies constantly have your eyes watering, then look for waterproof eyeliner. They're also great for summertime activities like going to the beach, as well as when engaging in sports.

One thing to note is, just because an eyeliner is stated to be waterproof doesn't mean that it's resistant to sebum or friction, nor does it mean it's quick-drying.

Choose a Smudge-Proof Eyeliner for Sebum Resistance

Choose a Smudge-Proof Eyeliner for Sebum Resistance

If you're finding yourself constantly with smudged eyeliner caused by sebum production, look for smudge-proof eyeliner.

Smudge-proof eyeliner is resistant to oil, making it great for those with oily skin as well as for those who want to use base makeup, liquid foundation, or concealer around their eyes.

However, smudge-proof is only resistant to oil and therefore isn't resistant to water, friction, or humidity.

Find One That’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want

Find One That’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want

There are three main types of eyeliner: liquid, gel, and pencil. They all perform differently, so, the first order of business is to talk about what kind of finish you want.

Recently, in addition to standard colors like black and brown, manufacturers have added colors like red, blue, and white, giving you further options to highlight your eyes.

Liquid for a Crisp, Bold Look

Liquid for a Crisp, Bold Look

Liquid eyeliner gleams and goes on in distinct, vivid colors that throw your eyes into sharp relief. They also are smooth to apply, with little to no abrasiveness.

Liquid eyeliner can be separated into two categories; brush and felt-tipped. Brush liquid eyeliners use a mixture of ultra-fine bristles with a diameter of roughly 0.01mm to 0.1mm and have a supple feel to them. While this allows you to draw both thick and thin lines, the bristles can move in all directions, meaning you have to be careful when applying.

Felt-tipped liquid eyeliners are similar to markers. Felt tips have a sturdy feel to them, making it easy to draw stable lines, and thus, is great for beginners. However, this means that it's also difficult to adjust the thickness of the lines you wish to draw.

Pencil is Best for a Soft, Natural Finish

Pencil is Best for a Soft, Natural Finish
You use eyeliner pencils to fill in the gaps between your lashes, which brings out the shape of your eyes. Because they blend and blur easily, they come out to a soft, natural finish. Should you slip up during application, you can clean them up with a Q-tip and start over, which makes pencil liners ideal for beginners.

There are two different types of pencil liners—the kind you have to sharpen, like your traditional No2 pencil, and the kind you twist up and down. The traditional pencil type allows you to control the thickness and finish of your lines, but also tends to have a more abrasive feel to them.

The twist-type is often softer, making them easier to draw. Since you also don't need to sharpen them, they're great for beginners. However, if you twist out too much, the pencil can break. Some also don't let you retract the pencil once you twist it out.

Gel is Harder to Smudge

Gel is Harder to Smudge
Gel liner is similar to liquid liner. It’s best for filling in gaps between your lashes so you look wide- and bright-eyed.

Gel liner can come in a jar or as a pencil The pencil type is usually the kind you twist out. They can be used not only to create an outline, but also be used in between your eyelashes. However, they are prone to breaking, due to their softness.

The gel liner that comes in a jar is applied using a brush. While they're great for drawing dense lines, it's also difficult to control the amount of eyeliner you take out of the jar, and may not be the best for beginners.

Not only does gel liner transfer easily onto skin, it’s soft, the colors are crisp, and it’s dewy. But it does take some practice to use the pot version of gel liners, since you have to get just the right amount of product by dipping in a brush, then start applying it. We recommend trying it out first on the back of your hand.

Different Colors Lead to Different Impressions

Different Colors Lead to Different Impressions
Color can also change the feel of your eyes. Brown makes for a softer, more natural look, black makes your eyes look sharper and more intense, and brown-black is a happy medium between the other two colors.

Choose Black for a Sharp Finish

Choose Black for a Sharp Finish

Black is great for those who want to really add intensity to their eyes since black is a dense, rich color. Additionally, if you want a more luscious feel, you can go for a liquid eyeliner. If you want a more matte finish, you may want to look for a pencil or gel liner.

If you don't want to draw too much attention to your eyes, use an ultra-fine brush that will allow you to draw thin, delicate lines. Finally, adding color between your eyelashes helps create the illusion of having bigger eyes.

However, because of the density of the color, any mistakes you make will stand out. For a clean finish, use a cotton swab to fix any errant lines.

Brown Creates a Natural Finish

Brown Creates a Natural Finish

If you want a more gentle look in your eyes, give brown a try. Also, it doesn't hurt that the color makes it harder to tell if you make mistakes, making it great for beginners. If you get a gel liner or a pencil, you can also blur them and use them as eyeshadow.

If the finish is too subtle, you can always add more until you get the density you want. By changing the density depending on where you draw, you can create an even more unique finish!

One thing to note is that the hue can vary depending on the brand and product, so be sure to try them out first if possible to see first-hand if it's the color you seek.

Atsushi Takatori
Hair and Makeup Artist

Brown is great for creating an effortless, laid-back vibe. Brown is also a more natural tone, so it's a great color to try for those who usually don't use eyeliner.

For a Subtle Finish, Choose Brown-Black

For a Subtle Finish, Choose Brown-Black

If you don't want to overemphasize your eyes, but don't want them to be too soft, go for brown-black. The color works well with any eye makeup while letting you create impressive, yet natural-looking eyes.

One of brown-black's biggest draws is that it seemingly changes colors depending on the situation. Outdoors, it can look brown, while indoors, it can look more black. It's also a great color to use to fill in your eyelashes, making it great for subtly emphasizing your eyes.

Similar to brown, though, is that the exact hue differs with brands and products.

Atsushi Takatori
Hair and Makeup Artist

Brown-black really offers the best of both worlds. Since it doesn't stand out too much, it works amazingly well with darker lipsticks.

Choose Other Colors Depending on Your Outfit or Mood

Black, brown, and black-brown may be the most common, but they are certainly not all the colors that exist. There are as many colors available as there are fish in the sea. You can find colors such as pink and orange that are poppy and lend energy to your look, or navy and maroon that are more toned down and classy enough for office wear.

Choose an Eyeliner That Comes off Easily

Choose an Eyeliner That Comes off Easily

Generally, there are two kinds of eyeliner; ones that can be removed with makeup remover, and those that can be removed with hot or warm water.

Waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliner has a higher adhesion to the skin, so even if the manufacturer claims they can be removed with hot water, it may be difficult to remove entirely.

When you rub at your eyes to remove eyeliner, you're paving the way for hyperpigmentation and will develop a dull, sunken-eyed look, so it’s important that you find an eyeliner that’s easy to remove.

Consider How it Feels to Use

Consider How it Feels to Use

Even if you find a brand or a color that you like, if the eyeliner is inconvenient to use, it may affect your finish. Be sure to check how the eyeliner feels to use, especially how it feels on your skin and how easy it is to hold.

What makes an eyeliner feel good to use:

  • The cap isn't too firm or too loose
  • The brush (or barrel) is flexible and gentle on the skin
  • It doesn't apply too much or too little color at once
  • It dries quickly
  • The body is thick enough and can be held easily

Be sure to watch out for eyeliners that feel abrasive, as this can cause the delicate skin around your eyes to become rough. Also, eyeliners that take forever to dry can possibly lead to the eyeliner getting on places you don't want it to.

If your eyeliner is hard to hold, that means it's easier to make mistakes, resulting in a crooked line. In order to have a neat finish, make sure your eyeliner is easy to grip.

How to Get Better at Applying Eyeliner

Eyeliner can be hard to use, so here are some tips and tricks from our very own makeup artist to help you improve your technique.

When Using Liquid Eyeliner, Try to Draw in Multiple Strokes

When Using Liquid Eyeliner, Try to Draw in Multiple Strokes
You may be tempted to finish up your eyeliner in a single stroke, but we don't recommend that. It’s easy away to get carried away by momentum, and you may end up with little lines protruding all over the place. Apply eyeliner by putting together a chain of short strokes.

Most liquid eyeliners have soft, thin tips that can mess up with the slightest of movements. To get an even line, rest either a finger or the side of your hand on your cheek and steady your hand.

Instructions

  1. Lay down the brush a little and draw in a way that connects short lines from the inner corner of the eye
  2. When you get close to the corner of the eye, raise the brush slightly and slide it across your eye with a light nudge to finish

You'll end up with a thicker line if you aren't careful around the outer corner of the eye. In order to get a neat line, the trick is to draw it in a smooth, light stroke.

Atsushi Takatori
Hair and Makeup Artist
Atsushi Takatori

Once you get the hang of it, try drawing thinner lines near the inner corner of your eye. By creating a taper near the inner and outer corners of your eye,  you'll end with a beautiful arch.

Pull Your Eyelid When Using Gel or Pencil Eyeliner

You can also get a lot of creases towards the inner corner of your eye, so when you apply eyeliner there, try lifting the skin diagonally upwards—towards the center of your brow—which will give you a smooth canvas to work on.

Pencil eyeliner and gel liners tend to be more abrasive. Trying to apply them in a similar fashion to liquid eyeliner will result in a messier line.

Instructions
  1. Place a finger from your non-dominant hand at a short distance from the corner of your eye, and pull outward
  2. While pulling on the skin, apply the tip of your pencil or gel liner to the outer corner of the eye, and draw a line toward the inner corner of the eye

Again, try not to draw in a single stroke, and instead use short strokes and draw thinner lines. Also, make sure you don't tug too hard on the skin, as it will make it more difficult to see where you're drawing!

When Using Pencil or Gel Eyeliner, Dot in the Gaps Between Your Lashes

When Using Pencil or Gel Eyeliner, Dot in the Gaps Between Your Lashes
By filling in your lash line, you can accentuate your iris and your pupils. Slightly lift up your eyelid with your finger; then draw a line by connecting one or two-millimeter dots.
When going for a more natural look, you can gently blend out the eyeliner with either an included brush or Q-tip. If you don’t want to actually have the line fade out, you can also add eye shadow on top to achieve a more gentle gradation.
If you find it hard to get your eyeliner to come to a point at the outer corner of your eyes when using pencil, try drawing from the outside in (towards the bridge of your nose). It should make it a lot easier.

For a Smudge-Free Look, Get Rid of Excess Oil and Apply a Setting Powder

For a Smudge-Free Look, Get Rid of Excess Oil and Apply a Setting Powder
Excess sebum is often the culprit behind panda eyes. Before applying eyeliner, clean up around your eyes with a cotton pad or tissue. After you’ve applied eyeliner, pat it down with a setting powder and make sure to add some powder to your lower lash line to prevent any color from transferring.

If it does smear, don’t just pile on more eyeliner. Use something with a fine tip—like a cotton swab—and remove everything, including your foundation. Then reapply everything, starting with your foundation. It may sound like a pain, but the finish will be much better.
