Top 26 Best Japanese Tube Mascaras to Buy Online 2019 – Tried and True!

Top Japanese and Korean Tube Mascaras to Buy Online 2019 - Tried and True!

All too often, we have to make a choice. Do we look good, or do we leave our skin and lashes well enough alone? Mascara opens up and brings out the eyes and irises, but it also likes to claim a few lashes as sacrifice when you take it off at night. However, tubing or tube mascara is designed to slip right off of your lashes with a bit of hot water.

In Japan, most of our top-selling mascaras are tubing. So you have a confusing array of choices–and you need to know not only which mascara comes off easily but also which looks best when it goes on. That’s why we ordered the 26 most popular tubing mascaras from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as @cosme, Amazon, and Rakuten) and tested for the following:

  1. Ease of Removal
  2. Curl Staying Power
  3. Finish
  4. Ease of Use
  5. Smudge Resistance

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese tube mascaras.

Table of Contents

Sorry, but What’s Tube Mascara Again?

Sorry, but What's Tube Mascara Again?

Tube or tubing mascara is mascara that comes off with hot water. In Japan, they’re commonly designated with a big “film type※1” on the label.

But if a bit of hot water is all it takes to remove this stuff, you might think, won’t it smudge and turn me into a panda in a matter of minutes? Actually, when tubing mascara dries, it forms a water-resistant film or tube around your lashes (from which it gets its name). This coats your lashes and won’t smear with just sweat or water.

However, once you soak your lashes in hot water, tubing mascara is designed to slide right off; therefore, you don’t need to rub or wipe at your eyes to remove anything. It won’t react to just lukewarm water, for obvious reasons, so go with water that’s above 100℉ (not to be confused with 100℃).

※1 フィルムタイプ:tubing mascara (lit. film type)

How to Choose Japanese Tube Mascara – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the mascaras, but before that, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out Japanese tubing mascara.

① Look for Mascara that’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want

Generally speaking, there are two kinds of mascara: lengthening※2 and volumizing※3. Each transforms your eyes in a different way, adding new nuances and impressions.

※2 ロングタイプ: lengthening (lit. long type)

※3 ボリュームアップ: volumizing

Lengthening Mascaras Give You Long, Delicate Lashes

Lengthening Mascaras Give You Long, Delicate Lashes

You might simply think “I want longer lashes.” Or you might be like, “I really want to bring out my eyes, but in doing so, still look natural.” In either case, you want lengthening mascara. Lengthening mascara gives you a sleek, clean finish, which results in a more elegant look.

If you’re looking for extra length, look for mascara that stretches out your lashes with the help of fiber strands–known in Japan as the fiber + long type※4.

※4 ファイバータイプ+ロングタイプ: fiber type + long type

Volumizing Mascara Gives You a Bold, More Dramatic Flair

Volumizing Mascara Gives You a Bold, More Dramatic Flair

If you want to look like you have thick lashes and a lot of them, get volumizing mascara. More product adheres onto your lashes, so they’re as dense as the pines on an evergreen. It brings out your pupils and irises, giving you a more intense gaze.

However, volumizing mascara does clump easily. When you apply multiple coats, to keep product from balling up, comb out your lashes in between each layer.

② Look for Brushes that are Easy to Use

Look for Brushes that are Easy to Use

Not getting your ideal lashes? One thing you may have overlooked: your brush. Here are the four most common types of mascara brushes; as you look over them, keep in mind both the kind of finish you want and what kind of brush you’d find easiest to work with.

  • Arched
Arched brushes are the most common and probably the most beginner-friendly. They can brush out your lashes so they’re longer, and they can pump up the volume too. They’re shaped to fit the curve of your eye, so it’s easy to apply mascara straight from the roots.
  • Rocket
The closer you get to the tip, the thinner the brush gets. This makes it easier to get to the fine lashes in the corners of your eyes. Then, when you need some overall volume, apply mascara with the thick center of the brush.
  • Gourd
Like a gourd, there’s a depression in the middle of the brush, meaning that it applies different amounts of mascara to different lashes. This makes it easier to fine tune both the volume and length of your lashes.
  • Comb
A comb will separate out your lashes as it applies product, which means it precludes clumping. It’s great if you want a more natural look.

③ Look for Mascara that’s Not Going to Smear

Look for Mascara that's Not Going to Smear

We said earlier that tubing mascaras are strong against oil and sweat. However, because they are designed to come off with hot water, some products do start flaking and smearing once it gets hot and humid enough.

On particularly hot, sweaty days or during allergy season, when your eyes are constantly watering, your mascara may slide off without you even noticing. It’s worth giving the reviews a quick read-through before purchasing. Of course, we also checked for smudge resistance when we tested out the products, so be sure to look out for the results!

You can also throw on a top coat on days you need extra staying power.

We then tested for each of the following things:

Test ①: Ease of Removal
Test ②: Curl Staying Power
Test ③: Finish
Test ④: Ease of Use
Test ⑤: Smudge Resistance

Test ①: Ease of Removal

Ease of Removal

First, we wanted to check whether or not the mascara was actually easy to remove.

We applied the tubing mascaras on false lashes. We then soaked each set of lashes in 104℉ water and looked for any residue. Finally, we graded the products on a five-step scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Heavier Products Cling on to Your Roots

The Big Takeaway: Heavier Products Cling on to Your Roots

Doesn’t matter if the mascara’s tubing or not–if it bundles your lashes together, it means that it’s stuck on tight and is only going to come off with a good amount of scrubbing. We tested out the products on false lashes–and good thing we did, because we accidentally plucked quite a few quite bare when trying to get rid of all residue.

On the other hand, if the product separated out lashes and went on light, then it usually slid right off in hot water. It’s mascaras like these that will save you precious time at the end of the day.

Test ②: Curl Staying Power

Curl Staying Power

Next, we looked at how long each mascara could keep our lashes curled.

We attached all of the coated lashes on to a wall for eight hours. We wanted to see how far the lashes drooped, both right after we applied tubing mascara and after eight hours had passed. We then graded each product on a scale from D to A+.

※In order to get as close as real life as possible, we also sprayed on some artificial sebum after four hours.

The Big Takeaway: Products that Spread Easily and Went on Light Kept Our Lashes Curled the Longest

The Big Takeaway: Products that Spread Easily and Went on Light Kept Our Lashes Curled the Longest

At the end of the day, the products that kept our lashes curled the longest tended to be soft and spreadable, as well as light-weight.

And, surprisingly enough, volumizing mascara was better at maintaining curl than lengthening mascara. It was denser and clingier, which actually helped it hold a pose for longer.

Test ③: Finish

Finish

Next, we simply looked at the finish of each mascara.

We applied the mascara on fake eyelashes and made sure there were no unsightly clumps. If the mascara was supposed to be lengthening, we looked at whether it actually made the lashes longer; if it was volumizing, we looked at whether it made them thicker. We then graded each on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that’s Been Laced through with Fiber both Volumizes and Lengthens

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that's Been Laced through with Fiber both Volumize and Lengthen

Mascara with thin strands of fiber mixed in did the best on this test–this holds true for both volumizing and lengthening mascara. You want the fiber strands to be fine, as larger strands can branch off from your lashes and look like split ends. However, smaller strands naturally blended into our lashes, leaving them looking thicker and longer, but still natural.

On the other hand, thick products that didn’t spread easily performed poorly on this test. They collected onto our lashes, leaving us with big clumps.

Test ④: Ease of Use

Ease of Use

Next, we looked at how easy each mascara was to apply. Specially, we wanted mascara that went on smoothly–without any hills or gaps–and brushes that picked up just the right amount of product. We graded everything on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Brushes Could be the Same Shape, but Depending on How Closely Packed Together Their Bristles were, Some were Easier to Use than Others

The Big Takeaway: Brushes Could be the Same Shape, but Depending on How Closely Packed Together Their Bristles were, Some were Easier to Use than Others

We had tons of brushes that looked identical at first glance; however, they all performed differently, depending on how closely packed together their bristles were. Brushes that had dense clusters of bristles were better at reaching every last lash, down to the fine hairs at the corners of the eyes. They left behind no gaps.

In addition, brushes that were flexible didn’t get stuck and were able to apply product smoothly–something else to keep in mind if you want a brush that’s easy to use.

Test ⑤: Smudge Resistance

Smudge Resistance

Finally, we tested each mascara for staying power.

We stuck the coated lashes onto sheets of paper and sprayed them with an artificial mixture of water and sebum. We then passed each set of lashes over with a cotton five times and looked at how much the mascara smeared. We then graded each on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Heroine Make’s Mascara, which was Both Waterproof and Tubing, Pulled away from the Pack, Easily Taking First

The Big Takeaway: Heroine Make's Mascara, which was both a Waterproof and Tubing Mascara, Stood Head and Shoulders above the Rest

Heroine Make’s Long & Curl Mascara Advanced Film didn’t budge at all. It might have had its own problems, which we’ll get to later, but we will give it credit for being both a waterproof and tubing mascara. Even when we sprayed it with water and rubbed at it, no color transferred on to the sheet underneath.

As far as we know, Heroine Make’s Advanced Film is the only waterproof mascara that comes off with hot water (which sounds odd–it’s all a matter of temperature). Give it a try on days you need extra staying power.

The Final Verdict: Top 17 Best Japanese Lengthening Tube Mascaras to Buy Online

Now to introduce the 17 best Japanese lengthening tube mascaras available online. They were ranked by how well they did on our tests and given an overall grade ranging from D to A+.

Won’t Come off Even if You Soak It in Hot Water. Clings to the Roots of Your Lashes

We rinsed the lashes off with hot water, but there was still some residue left at the roots. We tried soaking the lashes for longer, and then we tried scrubbing at them–still, the mascara didn’t budge. To be honest, we started wondering whether or not this was actually a tubing mascara.

The Matsuiku Girls Sexy Long lacks the one biggest strength of a tubing mascara and may actually end up damaging your lashes in the long run. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend it.

This Coats Your Lashes with a Lot of Product, Leaving You with a Gaudy Finish

This one’s popular among stage actors, and now we know why. The formula contained fiber, and it slathered itself all over our lashes, sticking them to one another. There was lot of clumping, and the final product was incredibly showy–this isn’t one we’d wear to work or even out in the city.

There wouldn’t have been as much of a problem if we had been able to control how much product went onto our lashes, but the brush was also difficult to use. There were just too many pitfalls.

MUJI’s mascara did come off easily, but it flunked two other tests (curl staying power and finish), which dragged it down to 15th place. Too much product adhered to our lashes, which left them thick and straggly, like seaweed.

In addition, it weighed down our lashes, causing them to lose their curl upon application.

This Mascara Comes off in Patches–and You Always End up Missing a Spot

Even though this mascara started peeling when we soaked it in hot water, there were parts that slid off completely and parts that kept clinging on. We had to rub at the lashes to get rid of all residue, and we ended up losing a few strands.

There wasn’t anything that the Virtual Long Lash was amazing at either, so we’d say there’s no reason to get this mascara in particular.

Can’t Get It to Apply Evenly… We Also Didn’t Like that the Fiber Strands Looked like Cotton

This one came off after we soaked it in hot water, but because it performed poorly on all the rest of our tests, it ended in only 13th place. We especially didn’t like the curve of the brush, which was incredibly slight, making it difficult to apply even coats of mascara to all of our lashes. Fiber also stuck out in weird places, so the finish was mediocre.

The fiber actually resembled strands of cotton; there was a lot, which made the mascara overly thick and lumpy. You aren’t going to get long and delicate lashes with this one.

When we sprayed it with water and sebum and gave it a rub, the Extra Volume Mascara started coming off in large flakes. The flakes then started smudging, and, well, you can imagine what happened next. Use this on your bottom lashes, and you will become a panda.

However, we liked how it brought our lashes to a nice, sharp point. If you want to use this mascara, you’ll have to apply a top coat over it or find some other way to keep it from smearing.

Lightweight Mascara that Really Plumps up Your Lashes! Just Watch out for Falling Flakes

This mascara did what it said it’d do: volumize lashes. However, it didn’t make them overly thick or ungainly, rather leaving them as dense and pretty as those on a doll.

However, the IMPACT was short-wearing, as many tubing mascaras unfortunately are. All we had to do was gently rub at it for it to start flaking off. Unless you take the time to touch up, your face is going to be peppered in black specks by the end of the day.

If You’re Looking for Just a Bit More Volume and a Natural Finish

This mascara was subtle, adding on just a bit of volume–nothing showy. We also liked that it didn’t leave lashes looking disheveled or frayed.

As for its ability to maintain a curl and how easy it was to remove, it was just average. The brush was easy enough to use. You have nothing to lose by getting this mascara, but you don’t have much to gain, either.

Gives You Soft, Elegant Lashes. Well Worth the Price

This spread out our lashes and left each with its own lovely finish. We would’ve liked just a bit more volume, but if you’re looking for soft, classy lashes, then you’d probably like Integrate’s Feminine Volume. The formula was similar to oil (in a good way) and left behind a nice sheen.

Though this was a fiber mascara, it didn’t weigh down lashes. They didn’t droop a centimeter during our eight-hour wear test; their tips stayed pointing straight up. Honestly, this mascara could have made first, but because it didn’t come off as easily as we would’ve liked a tubing mascara to come off, it got stuck in second.

Performed Way above the Norm on All Tests. You Can’t Go Wrong with This Mascara

Even though this is a volumizing mascara, it also spread out our lashes and elongated them. It’ll make eyes appear wider and brighter, more intense. And not only was the finish amazing, the brush was easy to use and curls were enhanced.

However, if you happen to rub at your eyes, you may dislodge some fiber strands. It won’t smudge and color won’t transfer, but if the thought bothers you, try throwing on some mascara top coat.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a mascara addict or you’re looking for your first tube now–this is a product you won’t want to miss.

How to Properly Remove Tubing Mascara

How to Properly Remove Tubing Mascara

Tubing mascara is supposed to come off easily with a bit of hot water, but, depending on the brand, there are some that don’t. When this happens, do not scrub off the residue!

Oftentimes, you need to soak your lashes in water to get rid of residue. If you take off your makeup in the shower or bath, let some steam and facial cleanser work its way into your mascara first, softening it up before you remove the rest.

If you take off your makeup before stepping into the shower, wet some cotton pads in warm water. Lay them on top of your eyes and let your lashes soak; this will ensure that all traces of mascara disappear when you rinse off your lashes afterwards.

Summary

We rounded up experts and members of our editing department, purchased the 26 most popular Japanese tubing mascaras, and tested them all.

As you probably saw, tubing mascaras have finishes that differ greatly from one another, and some are easier to remove than others. So next time you’re in the market looking for mascara that will be gentler on your lashes, make sure to keep the tips and tricks we talked about today in the back of your mind.

Summers here in Japan get humid and sticky. And yet Japanese men and women alike feel a need to look impeccable even when they’re floating in the middle of the ocean on a huge inner tube. • Maybelline Snapscara is tubing mascara, meaning it comes off with water. Getting good tubing mascara is one of the best things you can do for your lashes (other than putting nothing on them at all, but we aren’t giving up our smokey eyes). Still, you can’t help but wonder whether the mascara will flake. If it’ll clump. If it’ll even volumize or elongate your lashes at all. Our editing department purchased Maybelline’s Snapscara and sought to answer the above questions. This is what we learned during testing. Snapscara features Maybelline’s first gel-ink formula. It’s water- (as opposed to oil-) based, so the mascara applies smoothly and feels light. It reportedly volumizes and elongates without clumping. If you’re anything like us, when you pass someone with thick eyelashes in the street, you give them a glance of envy. And this happens a lot–we’re in Japan, land of cosmetics. Fake eyelashes, of course, are wildly popular here, but a good mascara is just as invaluable (and less likely to claim a few real eyelashes as sacrifice). Especially here in Japan, there are many types and brands: drugstore and high-end, tubing and waterproof. And the more choices you have, the harder it is to choose. • Top 30 Best Japanese Waterproof Eyeliners to Buy Online 2019
We had flurries of snow in Tokyo this week, but it doesn’t change the fact that spring and summer aren’t too far off. That means warmer weather, singing birds, blooming flowers, allergies, streaming eyes, and sweat. When the seasons change, your eyeliner needs to as well. (This holds doubly true in Japan, where pollen runs rampant in April and humidity is unbelievable in August.) In order to make sure we look good 24/7, 365 days a year, cosmetics companies have come out with tons of waterproof eyeliners. So much that it’s near impossible to decide between them. • Heroine Make Waterproof Eyeliner Review - mybest
If you’ve stepped foot into a Japanese drugstore before, you’ve seen Heroine Make. They’re known as much for their cosmetics as they are for their twinkly-eyed heroines of yesteryear (who are oddly reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein pop art). But are they popular because their products are good or is it just skillful advertising? Our editing department purchased Heroine Make’s top-selling eyeliner to see if it was worth the hype. Specifically, we were looking at how easy it was to use, how well-pigmented it was, and how resistant to smudging. This is what we learned during testing. If you want bigger eyes, get eyeliner. If you want sensual eyes, intense eyes, eyes of any kind, get eyeliner. Eyeliner’s a big part of any look. And we’d venture so far as to say it’s extra important here in Japan where–we admit it–our eyes tend to run a bit… small. That’s why our cosmetics companies–including Heroine Make, shu uemura, and (even) Daiso–are churning out products. Of course, with a great number of products comes a great amount of choice, and with a great amount of choice comes confusion (not an Uncle Ben quote). We’re in the age of J-Beauty. It’s almost ludicrous looking at the waves of actresses and models with their tiny faces and huge doll-like eyes. It can be hard to get powder foundation to sit well on the skin. But you can’t deny that it’s oil-controlling, no-mess, and easy to apply.
