Top 18 Best Japanese Waterproof Mascaras to Buy Online 2020 - Tried and True!

Summers here in Japan get humid and sticky. And yet Japanese men and women alike feel a need to look impeccable even when they’re floating in the middle of the ocean on a huge inner tube. In order to answer that need, cosmetics companies here have come out with scores of waterproof mascaras meant to withstand the steamiest hot springs and the biggest waves.

If you’re new to the Japanese cosmetics market, it can be hard to tell which brands–Canmake, Heroine Make, Majolica Majorca–are amazing and which are a passing fad. That’s why, this time around, we ordered the 18 most popular waterproof mascaras from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as @cosme, Amazon, and Rakuten) and tested for the following:

1. Smudge Resistance
2. Curl Staying Power
3. Finish
4. Ease of Use
5. Ease of Removal

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese waterproof mascaras.

How to Choose Japanese Waterproof Mascara – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the mascaras, but before that, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out Japanese waterproof mascara.

① Get Mascara that’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want

① Get Mascara that’s Going to Give You the Finish You Want
There are two main types of mascara: volumizing※1 and lengthening※2.
No two people have the same eyelashes, nor do their lashes share a length or curve. They also have different ideas on what an “ideal” set of lashes would look like. Look for mascara that’s meant to give you your ideal look–and can maintain that look for an entire day. You want it to address your specific concerns, whether it be about the shortness or sparsity of your lashes.
Most packaging will list the effects their mascara is meant to have, so make sure you read before purchasing. If you’re shopping in person and there’s samples or a makeup counter, try out the item first. It’s the most surefire way of finding a product you’re going to like.
※1 ボリュームアップ: volumizing
※2 ロングタイプ: lengthening (lit. long type)

② Get a Brush that’s Going to be Easy to Use

② Get a Brush that’s Going to be Easy to Use
Mascara brushes come in all different shapes and sizes, including fat and thin, straight and curved, bristles and teeth, and so on.
If you’re looking for volume, then it’s typically easier to use a thicker straight brush; if you’re looking for length, then try a finer arched brush. With a comb, you can separate and spread out your lashes, which will give you a more delicate and natural finish.
The shape of the brush determines how much and where mascara applies; this, in turn, determines finish. If you were to use an unwieldy brush and accidentally get waterproof mascara onto your skin, it’d take a long time to clean up–far longer than if you had used a tubing mascara.
That’s why the shape of the brush becomes all the more important when choosing waterproof mascara. We talk more about different types of mascaras and brushes in the article linked below, so feel free to check it out if you want to learn more.

③ Get a Formula that Going to be Easy to Remove

③ Get a Formula that Going to be Easy to Remove
Because waterproof mascara is resistant to both sweat and oil, it takes time to clean it off your lashes; there are even some products that require fancy eye makeup remover. Rubbing too roughly at your eyes can lead to hyperpigmentation, so look for mascara that comes off easily.
The best kinds of mascara are the ones that come off with hot water. You don’t need to scrub at it; just soak your lashes in hot water, and the mascara should slide off.
If you can’t get mascara that comes off with hot water, then see if whatever company made your mascara also produces eye makeup remover. These removers were most likely formulated with those mascaras in mind, so they’ll be more effective at cleaning up your lids.

We then tested for each of the following things:
Test ①: Smudge Resistance
Test ②: Curl Staying Power
Test ③: Finish
Test ④: Ease of Use
Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Test ①: Smudge Resistance

Test ①: Smudge Resistance
First, we checked whether each mascara could resist smudging.
We applied the waterproof mascaras onto fake eyelashes, and sprayed each with a mixture meant to simulate water and sebum. We then passed the lashes over five times each with a cotton pad and looked at how much smeared. We then rated each on a five-step scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Liquid Mascaras that Were Dense and Solid Tended to Have the Most Staying Power

The Big Takeaway: Liquid Mascaras that Were Dense and Solid Tended to Have the Most Staying Power
These were all waterproof mascaras, so none of them smudged that badly. However, even among the batch we had, mascaras that were more viscous–almost glutinous–tended to last longer. They clung on the false lashes, making them resistant even to friction.
On the other hand, the mascaras that smudged the most had more watery textures. They had less adhesive power–and if they happened to have fiber mixed into them, then the fiber strands also fell out in droves. These probably wouldn’t last at the beach or pool or at a hot summer stadium.

Test ②: Curl Staying Power

Test ②: Curl Staying Power
Next, we looked at how long the mascaras could maintain a curl.
We affixed all of our coated lashes to a wall and left them there for eight hours. We kept track of how much the lashes drooped both right after application and after eight hours had passed. We then graded all the mascara on a scale from D to A+.
※ In order to get as close as real life as possible, we also sprayed on some artificial sebum after four hours.

The Big Takeaway: The Top Performers Had Light-Weight Formulas and Spread out Our Lashes

The Big Takeaway: The Top Performers Had Light-Weight Formulas and Spread out Our Lashes
The waterproof mascaras that did the best on this test usually had the following things in common: they felt light and separated our lashes from one another. The products that got an A+ also went on in smooth, uniform coats.
In addition, waterproof volumizing mascaras tended to maintain curl better than lengthening mascaras. Out of the nine products we tested, a whopping seven scored an A or higher on this test.

Test ③: Finish

Test ③: Finish
Next, we simply looked at the finish of each mascara.
We applied the waterproof mascara onto the false lashes and checked if it’d give us a nice clean finish with no clumps. If the mascara was supposed to be lengthening, we made sure the lashes were actually longer; if it was supposed to be volumizing, we made sure they were thicker. We then graded each mascara on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: This Time around, We Liked Lengthening Mascaras that Utilized Fiber and Volumizing Mascaras that Spread Easily

The Big Takeaway: This Time around, We Liked Lengthening Mascaras that Utilized Fiber and Volumizing Mascaras that Spread Easily
The lengthening mascaras that did well on this test had fiber mixed into them. These fiber strands were so thin they were nearly imperceptible to the naked eye, but they adhered to lashes and elongated them. That being said, look for mascara that utilizes fine fiber, as these will be easier to apply.
On the other hand, volumizing mascaras that did well had soft, spreadable formulas. After all, it’s common to apply multiple coats of volumizing mascara. The softer the mascara, the less likely it is to clump up and the more even your coats are going to be. Texture is paramount if you’re looking for lashes that are soft and thick, rather than heavy and bulky.

Test ④: Ease of Use

Test ④: Ease of Use
Next, we tested how easy each mascara was to apply. We looked at whether each coat went on smoothly, without any bumps or dips, and whether the brush held just the right amount of product. We then graded each mascara on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Brushes that are Covered in Densely Packed Bristles are the Easiest to Use, as They Reach Every Last One of Your Lashes

The Big Takeaway: Brushes that are Covered in Densely Packed Bristles are the Easiest to Use, as They Reach Every Last One of Your Lashes
It didn’t matter whether the mascara was lengthening or volumizing; if it came with a brush completely covered in densely packed bristles, it was easier to apply. These brushes can reach into fine areas, such as the corners of your eyes, and apply product without missing a spot.
Furthermore, the densely packed bristles made sure that every single last lash was coated in mascara. And everything only becomes easier if the brush is flexible as well.

Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Test ⑤: Ease of Removal
Finally, we checked whether each mascara would come off easily.
If the product was meant to be removed with hot water, we simply dunked the coated lashes in 104℉ water. Everything else, we used cleansing oil. We looked for residue on the lashes and graded each mascara on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: As Expected, Nothing Performed Better than Mascaras that Came off with Hot Water

The Big Takeaway: As Expected, Nothing Performed Better than Mascaras that Came off with Hot Water
You might have expected this, but mascaras that came off with hot water were the easiest to remove.
You have to scrub at many waterproof mascaras to get them to come off, which also means that you’re taking a few lashes as collateral. But if the mascara comes off with hot water, all you have to do is soak them for a bit and the product comes sliding right off. In fact, it slid off so quickly, some of our editors started loudly vocalizing their surprise…

Top 10 Best Japanese Hair Dyes to Buy Online 2020 - Tried and True!
Let’s get this straight–there’s no such thing as a “best” hair dye. Strictly speaking. Just like there’s no such thing as a “best” concealer or “best” mattress or “best” jacket because it all comes down to you. What kind of skin do you have? What kind of sleeping posture? Do you get cold easily? This time around, we ordered the 10 most popular hair dyes found in Japanese drugstores and on Japan’s e-commerce sites and compared the following:1. How vivid the color was2.
