Top 38 Best Japanese and Korean Mascaras to Buy Online 2019 – Tried and True!

Top 51 Best Japanese Mascara to Buy Online 2019 - Tried and True!

If you’re anything like us, when you pass someone with thick eyelashes in the street, you give them a glance of envy. And this happens a lot–we’re in Japan, land of cosmetics. Fake eyelashes, of course, are wildly popular here, but a good mascara is just as invaluable (and less likely to claim a few real eyelashes as sacrifice).

Especially here in Japan, there are many types and brands: drugstore and high-end, tubing and waterproof. And the more choices you have, the harder it is to choose. That’s why, this time around, we ordered the 38 most popular mascaras from Japan’s e-commerce giants (such as @cosme, Amazon, and Rakuten) and tested for the following:

  1. Curl Staying Power
  2. Finish
  3. Ease of Use
  4. Smudge Resistance
  5. Ease of Removal

This is how we tested and found the most exceptional Japanese and Korean mascaras.

How to Choose Japanese and Korean Mascara – Buying Guide

We’ll get into how we tested and compared all the mascaras, but before that, we want to introduce three things you should look out for when picking out Japanese or Korean mascara.

① Make Sure the Mascara’s Formulated to Give You the Finish You Want

There’s two main types of mascara: lengthening※1 and volumizing※2. Depending on which you use, you’ll end up with a slightly different look, so get the one that’s going to give you the finish you need.

※1 ロングタイプ: lengthening (lit. long type)

※2 ボリュームアップ: volumizing

If You’re Going for Dainty, Long Eyelashes, Get Lengthening

If You're Going for Those Dainty, Long Eyelashes, Get Lengthening

We mean, you can probably tell from the name, but lengthening mascaras make your eyelashes longer. They’re great if you want to elongate short lashes or if you’re looking for a natural look (but still want to bring out your eyes).

If you want to go extra long, see if you can mascara that’s got fibers in it–known here as the fiber + long type※3. But there’s a bit of a learning curve to fiber mascara, so if you’re a klutz with makeup, you might just decide it’s not worth the effort. We’ll talk about this in more detail later.

※3 ファイバータイプ+ロングタイプ: fiber type + long type

If You’re Looking for Impact and to Really Open up Your Eyes, Get Volumizing

If You're Looking for Impact and to Really Open up Your Eyes, Get Volumizing

Volumizing macara makes it look like you have more and thicker eyelashes. It’s great if you don’t have many eyelashes or if the eyelashes you do have no body or spring to them.

It also really enhances your irises and pupils, so if you’re looking for a dramatic flair, you can’t go wrong with volumizing. The only thing is it clumps rather easily, so you may want to comb out your eyelashes as you’re laying it on.

② Match the Type of Mascara to Your Skin Type and Particular Situation

Mascaras can be lengthening and volumizing; they can also have tons of other effects and characteristics. Check out two of the most important below, and see if they correspond to any of your needs.

If You Want to Remove Your Makeup with Hot Water, Look for Tubing Mascara

If You Want to Remove Your Makeup with Hot Water, Look for Tubing Mascara

Tubing or tube mascara, known in Japan as “film type”※4 mascara, comes off with hot water. If the last thing you want to do at the end of a long day is wrestle with your makeup, go with tubing.

But even though tubing mascara is only supposed to come off with hot water, there’s plenty of products that start smearing as soon as they’re wetted with lukewarm water, way beneath 100℉. So if your eyes water constantly, especially during allergy season, you might find that your mascara came off without you even noticing–something to watch out for.

※4 フィルムタイプ: tubing mascara (lit. film type)

If You Want Your Makeup to Look on Point the Entire Day, Get Waterproof Mascara

If You Want Your Makeup to Look on Point the Entire Day, Get Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is also pretty self-explanatory; it’s resistant to water and doesn’t come off as easily as tubing mascara. If you need your makeup to stay on, especially at the beach or the pool, then waterproof is your best bet.

The only thing is waterproof mascara doesn’t mix well with oil. If you secrete a lot of sebum around your eyes, with certain brands, there’s a good chance you’ll wind up looking like a panda at the end of the day. However, recently, companies have been coming out with waterproof mascaras that are sebum-resistant, so look out for those.

③ Pay Attention to the Brush, as It Determines Finish and Ease of Application

You wouldn’t think it, but the shape of the brush has a huge effect on your final look.

We talk about the four most common brush shapes below; look out for which one seems easiest to use and will give you the finish you want.

Anyone Can Get More Voluminous Lashes with a Good Arch

Anyone Can Get More Voluminous Lashes with a Good Arch

Arches are the most common shape and the most beginner-friendly. They’re good for volumizing and curling your lashes.

It’s curved in a way that fits the human eye, such that you can effectively coat all your eyelashes with a single swipe. We especially love that it makes it easier to apply mascara to the very roots of your lashes.

Reach into Nooks and Crannies with a Rocket Brush

Reach into Nooks and Crannies with a Rocket Brush

Brushes shaped like rockets will volumize your lashes and help you get into those corners. That’s because the closer you get to the tip, the thinner the brush gets. When you use the center of the brush, you add some more volume to all your lashes; when you use the tip, you can apply mascara to more delicate areas, such as the corners of your eyes and your under lashes.

Separate out Each Single Eyelash with a Comb

Separate Out Each Single Eyelash with Combs

Because it brushes out each single eyelash as it applies mascara, comb-shaped brushes preclude clumps. They’re great for adding some curl or for producing long, delicate lashes.

They also spread out your lashes, which makes you look wide- and bright-eyed.

Take Complete Control with a Gourd-Shaped Brush

Take Complete Control with a Gourd-Shaped Brush

Because there’s a dip in the middle, a gourd-shaped brush will apply different amounts of mascara to different parts of your lashes. That makes it easier to fine tune volume and length.

Furthermore, if you use just the tip of the brush, it’s easy to apply mascara to small areas. If you take the time to master this brush, you can play around with all kinds of subtle looks.

Beginners, It May be Better to Stay Away from Fiber Mascara

If You Don't Have Confidence in Your Makeup Skills, It May be Better to Stay Away from Fiber Mascara

Make sure you check whether there’s any fiber※5 mixed into the mascara. If you’re not good at applying mascara or simply not yet used to it, then you may find yourself slightly stumped by fiber mascara.

Fiber mascara’s great because it’s extra volumizing, adding on both length and thickness to your lashes. However, because there’s a lot of products out there that utilize fibers of different shapes and sizes, they clump fairly quickly. When applying, take your time and comb out your lashes between coats.

※5 繊維: fiber (also sometimes written in katakana, as ファイバー)

We then tested for each of the following things:

Test ①: Curl Staying Power
Test ②: Finish
Test ③: Ease of Use
Test ④: Smudge Resistance
Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Test ①: Curl Staying Power

Curl Staying Power

First, we looked to see how long the mascara kept your lashes curled.

We applied all the mascara to fake eyelashes and stuck them to a wall for eight hours. We looked at how much the lashes sagged, both right after application and after eight hours had passed. We then graded each product on a five-step scale from D to A+.

※In order to get as close as real life as possible, we also sprayed on some artificial sebum after four hours.

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that Separates out your Lashes and Mascara that was Voluminizing Stayed Curled the Longest

The Big Takeaway: Mascaras that Separate out your Lashes and Ones that were Voluminous Stayed Curled the Longest

At the end of the day, most of the lashes that stayed curled were coated with “separating” mascara–that is, the kind that combs out each individual lash. It may be because, since the lashes were spread out, each individual lash had to carry less weight, which kept it perky for hours.

In addition, volumizing mascara also tended to preserve curl. As long as the lashes were coated in a mascara that spread easily, rather than one that was dense and viscous, they could keep that nice upward arch for an entire day.

Test ②: Finish

Finish

Next, we went more surface-level and simply graded each mascara on how it made your lashes look.

We applied mascara onto each of our sets of fake eyelashes and tried to make sure we got a nice clean finish–no clumps. If it was a lengthening mascara, we checked to see if the lashes were actually longer; if it was volumizing, we checked to see if they were thicker. We then ranked each product on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that’s Been Fortified with Superfine Fiber Really Lengthens and Plumps up Your Lashes

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that's Been Fortified with Superfine Fiber Really Lengthen and Plump up Your Lashes

Mascaras that did well on this test usually had superfine fiber mixed into them. The fiber strands, which were so thin they were nearly imperceptible to the naked eye, adhered to lashes, adding on both length and volume.

Many mascaras that have fiber mixed in to them clump easily and are difficult to use. However, as long as the fiber strands are super thin, then you’ll get a nice finish. Just make sure you aren’t coating your lashes with too much fiber at once. If a huge glob of the stuff gets stuck on your brush, wipe off the excess with a tissue before applying.

On the other hand, liquid mascaras that were thick and viscous received low ratings. They kept getting caught on things, making it impossible to get a smooth coat.

Test ③: Ease of Use

Ease of Use

Next, we looked at how easy each mascara was to apply.

We checked for things like whether we could get a smooth coat, no clumps or gaps, or whether it was easy to get just the right amount of product. We then rated each mascara on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Using Brushes with Densely Packed Bristles was a Piece of Cake! They Coat All Your Lashes, not Skipping over a Single One

The Big Takeaway: Using Brushes with Densely Packed Bristles was a Piece of Cake! They Coat All Your Lashes, not Skipping over a Single One

Brushes with densely packed bristles made everything easier, no matter whether we were using lengthening or volumizing mascara. They could reach the fine lashes at the corners of the eyes, meaning there were no awkward gaps.

Furthermore, if the brush was soft overall, lashes didn’t get caught on it. This made for a smoother application and beautiful, painless finish. On the other hand, if the brush was stiff and the bristles sparse, it made for a scraggly final look.

Test ④: Smudge Resistance

Smudge Resistance

Next, we tested to see if the mascaras would smear or smudge.

We affixed the coated fake eyelashes onto sheets of paper and sprayed them with a mixture meant to simulate water and sebum. We then rubbed each five times with a wad of cotton and checked for smudging. We rated each mascara on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Waterproof Mascaras that were a Dense Liquid were Not Only Resistant to Water, but also to Rubbing

The Big Takeaway: Waterproof Mascaras that Were a Dense Liquid were Not Only Resistant to Water, but also to Rubbing

As would be expected, waterproof mascaras were the most smudge-proof. By far. Non-waterproof mascaras couldn’t even compare.

In the waterproof mascara world, products that were thick but had some stretch to them were the least likely to smear. They were heavy, but that also allowed them to really adhere to the lashes and withstand friction.

In addition, if you use a mascara that’s quick-drying, you can blink without having to worry about it transferring onto your skin. It’s something else to keep in mind if you’re concerned about smudging.

Test ⑤: Ease of Removal

Ease of Removal

And finally, we looked at how easy each mascara was to remove.

If it was tubing mascara, we’d dunk our coated fake lashes in 104℉ water. If it was any other type, we’d use cleansing oil. We then looked at how much residue we were left with and graded each product on a scale from D to A+.

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that Bundles up the Lashes Tended to Be More Difficult to Remove

The Big Takeaway: Mascara that Bundles up the Lashes Tend to Be More Difficult to Remove

If the mascara swept your eyelashes into little bundles, chances are that you’d have to rub at them to get them to come off, even if they were tubing. We tested the products on fake lashes, and thank goodness we did–when we rubbed at the lashes to try to remove the mascara, they started falling out in droves. Probably not good for the skin either.

It’s probably going to be a pain, but if you do choose to use mascara that gives you that bundled-up effect, get yourself a good eye makeup remover and remove gently.

It’s Lengthening Alright, but Also Has the Unfortunate Effect of Making Your Lashes Look Awkward and Clumpy

This one was kind of a maverick, asking us to alternate between normal and fiber mascara when applying coats. By building on layers, we could get the lashes to extend to as long as we wanted, but we ended up with jagged edges and a messy finish. You have to choose between length and finish, either or.

Furthermore, as the day went on, fiber that looked like bits of cotton started drifting down. You can imagine how that’d leave you with panda eyes. We couldn’t think of why anyone would want to use this product, so it ended up at the bottom of our rankings.

There’s Too Much Fiber in This One, so It’s Difficult to Apply

We did agree that this one was suitable for the stage (and only for the stage). There were a lot of fiber strands in here, and it left the fake lashes looking unkempt. We couldn’t imagine having to use this every day. It was impossible to get a natural or delicate look.

Stuck our Lashes Firmly Together… So Heavy It’ll Cause Your Lashes to Droop over the Course of a Day

People have been buzzing about this Muji mascara on social networks, but it earned a score of D for both its finish and curl, ranking in at only 20. The liquid kind of splurted onto the lashes, sticking them firmly to one another. The clumping was especially bad around the roots, and you’d probably feel that weight every time you blinked.

It was easy to remove, but since it doesn’t do anything else a mascara’s supposed to do, we can’t recommend it.

Clumps Easily, and the Finish was Anything but Long and Sexy

The formula was thick and it clumped easily. Even though this was supposed to be a lengthening mascara, it gave us this bulky and heavy finish reminiscent of a bad volumizing mascara. And that weight dragged our lashes down, eliminating all hint of a curl.

Not to mention that, even though this was a tubing mascara, it didn’t come off with hot water. Well, you get what you pay for, right?

Because the Fibers Stuck to the Ends of Our Lashes, They Looked Disheveled

Because the fibers pasted themselves to all of the lashes, the finish turned out messy and disheveled. Plus, it caused the lashes to bunch together, making it nearly impressible to separate them out.

This Mascara Didn’t Smudge! However, We Didn’t Like that It Made Our Lashes Stick to Each Other

The formula was quite thin and easily spreadable, so we didn’t think they made the lashes look thick or ungainly. It was also a very natural black and easy to apply. However, it dried slowly–and as we were waiting for it to dry, the lashes started sticking to one another. Once it was dry, it was resistant to both sweat and oil; however, we can’t say this is one for busy mornings.

Difficult to Apply in Smooth Layers

Maybe it was because the curve to the brush was very slight, but it was difficult to get even coats of mascara onto the lashes. There was fiber mixed in shaped like puffs of cotton, and it added on a lot of length, but if you tried to apply multiple layers, everything started looking sticky and heavy.

When we made it a mistake, it was really difficult to fix. If you’re not already a pro at applying mascara, this product’s probably going to be trouble.

This mascara clung on to everything, so we couldn’t get it to apply only to where we wanted it. Furthermore, the fibers were messy, and the lashes ended up looking like seaweed… And even though the mascara claimed to separate out your lashes, it actually bundled them together.

It Doesn’t Smear and is Easy to Remove, but the Finish is Lacking

The curve of the bush was awkward and didn’t work well, so the lashes ended up sticking together. In the end, the Pure Free Mascara was more volumizing than lengthening, succeeding only in making the lashes more bulky. This isn’t a product you’d want to layer.

Why is It So Hard to Separate our Lashes… with a Comb? Will Also Probably Transfer to Your Under Eye

The comb was of an interesting shape, arched to fit the curve of our lashes, but it got tangled in them, making it impossible to brush them out. There were also bits of lash where the mascara collected, and everything ended up pretty sticky, so we were worried about the mascara transferring onto our under eye area.

These didn’t lengthen lashes that much, certainly not to the point where you’d be saying, “My eyes look like peacocks! Look at these long, fan-shaped lashes.”※6 It wouldn’t be wise to get your hopes up.

If You Prize Smudge Resistance over Finish, then You Might Like This One

Well, we can say this one was “super waterproof.” It was almost impossible to smudge. You can let yourself go in summer or play intense sports–this mascara won’t budge. But, in exchange, you also have to accept its mediocre finish and the fact that it does not come off easily.

You can probably see from the picture, but the fibers stuck to the lashes, looking like split ends. Even though this was a lengthening mascara, it also thickened our lashes quite a bit; this is not a product that will leave you with a delicate finish.

We Didn’t Like How Clunky It Looked… But It Doesn’t Smudge and is Easy to Remove

The product adhered onto the brush in big gloops, so when we applied without first wiping off the brush, it made our lashes look thick and awkward. The formula was pretty thick, so it was also difficult to comb out lashes after the fact.

But it was true that it won’t smudge and you can remove it in a snap, so we got why it was so popular on @cosme (the go-to makeup database in Japan). Looks and Feels Light! Separates out Lashes and Extends Smoothly to a Sharp Point

In our pool of lengthening mascaras, this one stood head and shoulders above the rest for how cleanly it separated out each lash. The product was light, giving us a clean, crisp finish. It really lengthened the lashes, but still left them looking natural and soft.

The only thing we didn’t really like was the thickness of the brush. Even though it was arched the fit the curve of an eye, it was difficult to coat fine hairs, like the ones on the bottom lid and in the corners of the eye.

The Finish is Perfect! A Lengthening Mascara that Also Ramps up the Volume

This was a lengthening mascara, and it did just what it claimed to do–but it also had the wonderful effect of thickening lashes. And it did everything in a very natural way, which we liked. Basically, it was almost perfect, from the way it separated the lashes to how light it was to how the finish looked.

However, it smeared just a little too much for a tubing mascara… Quite a bit transferred when we rubbed at it, so depending on your personal habits, this mascara might not last for a full day.

Even Experts are Amazed at How Beautiful This Leaves Your Lashes, Down to Every Last Strand! Perfect if You’re Looking for a Crisp, Clean Look

This separated out every strand and then fanned out our lashes. The brush did only have bristles, but they were closely packed all the way around the body, so it brushed out lashes just as a comb would. However, it didn’t add much volume to our lashes; this mascara’s perfect if you’re looking for a more clean, sleek look.

We also had no complaints about smudging or drooping. We actually thought this mascara was going to be perfect in every way, but when we tried to remove it, we had some product stuck near the roots–even though this was tubing mascara. We had to mix in some cleansing oil and gently work out the residue.

Lengthening Mascara that Looks Natural and Doesn’t Smudge! And Don’t Get Us Started on the Price

The gently sloping arch of the brush was modeled after the curve of the eye. The coats go on smoothly, leaving your lashes soft and elegant. There was fiber mixed into the formula, but they were so fine, you’d have to look hard to see them. If you’re worried about your lashes looking clunky and if you want a natural look, you can’t go wrong with this one.

We also loved that, even though this was tubing mascara, it was resistant to water–almost as much as a waterproof mascara would be. You can use this mascara anywhere and at any time. It was a lot good stuff for a really low price.

We Can’t Get Over at How Clean and Long This Left Our Lashes! The Lengthening Mascara mybest is Obsessed with!

We have to say, this really earned its title of “fake eyelashes in a tube.” It separated out each individual lash and lengthened them in a way that looked clean and classy. There was fiber in the formula, but because it was so light, it left us with a natural finish. Just be careful not to overapply; that’s when fibers got stuck to the lashes and looked like split ends.

It was also long-lasting, with almost no transfer. You can use eyedrops, or your eyes can water all through allergy season–this mascara will not turn you into a panda. This one’s a godsend when the pollen starts flying and the eyes start flowing.

It’s also available for a reasonable price, so even if you’ve never used mascara before, this would be a good first one to try.

Smears, Even Though It Doesn’t Add on Much Volume–Not the Best Combo, in Our Opinion…

This didn’t add on much volume, so if you’re looking for thick lashes that will throw your eyes into sharp relief, forget it. We did like that it kept our lashes separate from each other, but it certainly didn’t make them dense or luxurious.

It also smeared with water and oil. Honestly speaking, we didn’t see any point to buying this mascara.

As soon as we sprayed on some water, rivulets of black started trickling down. When we rubbed at it, it just made everything worse. When we pulled the brush out of the tube, we were frankly shocked on how much product was on it. We wiped off excess on a tissue, but even so, the mascara clumped and stuck our lashes to one another.

Not to mention how uneven everything was. This was an unbelievable mascara that left us with thick lashes, thin lashes, and everything in between.

Doesn’t Matter that This Mascara Doesn’t Budge throughout the Day–the Initial Finish isn’t That Amazing

This mascara didn’t smear and it kept our lashes curled. However, when it dried, it looked powdery and clumpy. What did it matter that the mascara stayed if it was awkward and clumpy from the very beginning?

Furthermore, the brush was thick and hard to use. If you aren’t careful, you’re going to get mascara on your eyelids.

Dries Slowly, so Chances are It’s Going to Transfer onto Your Eyelids

We liked dejavu’s lengthening mascara, but unfortunately, we can’t say the same about its volumizing. It took forever to dry, so some of it started smearing as we were applying it. If you have either single or hooded lids, this mascara’s probably going to transfer onto your eyelids.

It did leave us with thick, doll-like lashes. It’s not a bad one to use if you have the time to apply it slowly and gingerly.

Adds a Lot of Volume, but Lashes Droop under the Weight of Its Formula

A lot of celebrities here in Japan use EYEMANIA, but it didn’t do much to keep our lashes curled. Also, when we accidentally applied too much product, it was difficult to clean up.

It left our lashes shiny and looked good from afar, but it had a rough finish that will become apparent as soon as you blink or look down. It’ll be a pain, but this is another one you have to brush out with a comb in between coats.

The Film Comes off in Flakes and Smudges… Don’t Use This One on Your Under Lashes!

We wet it, we applied a bit of oil, then we rubbed at it; this mascara started randomly coming off in large flakes. It wouldn’t have been as big of an issue if that’s all it did, but then the flakes started smearing… Use this on your bottom lashes, and you might just become a panda.

We did think that it combined lashes in a nice way, bringing each bundle to a sharp point. However, we’d say that, because it smudged so easily, this is one product you shouldn’t risk using.

Took Points off for How Difficult This Mascara was to Remove. Unfortunate, but We Had to Do It for the Sake of Your Lashes

This is a pretty decent mascara, well-balanced in its strengths; the only thing keeping it back was how difficult it was to remove. Even when we used cleansing oil, we were still left with some residue. If you use this mascara every day, chances are it’s going to take a toll on your lashes.

The brush that came with this mascara was comparatively fine, and it was easy to use. If you have time to gingerly remove this mascara at night–and you just want something easy to use in the morning–then it’s worth giving the PowerStyle a shot.

The Finish wasn’t Anything Special, but This Volumizing Mascara was Made for Summer

The mascara applied unevenly onto different lashes, so we weren’t pleased with the finish… However, it was “super waterproof”–when it came to smudge resistance, we’d say this came out on top. You could walk in a downpour or go surfing in summer, and this mascara wouldn’t budge.

If you’re looking for volume and impact, then this mascara’s the one. This gave lashes body and elasticity, so we could imagine it’d work well even on those who naturally don’t have that many lashes. The brush was a comb, so even when the mascara clumped, all we had to do was brush it out again. It was pretty user-friendly.

Our lashes were spread out, and each individual strand looked amazing. This mascara didn’t get too bulky, either, leaving us with a classy and refined finish. The formula was slick as oil, and we liked that it imparted a sheen to our lashes.

There was also fiber in this formula, but they didn’t weigh down our lashes. On the contrary, they stayed curled upwards for the full eight hours. Tips and Tricks on How to Get Beautiful Lashes with Mascara

You could get the best mascara in the world–you still aren’t going to get the finish you want unless you know how to use it. You definitely don’t want to mess up and be left with streaks of black all over your lids…

Below, we’ve lined up a few tips and tricks that professional hair and makeup artists use, so be sure to try them out.

Wipe off Any Extra Product on a Tissue

Wipe off Any Extra Product on a Tissue

When a huge chunk of mascara gets stuck on the tip of your brush, make sure you wipe it off with a tissue before applying.

It might seem to be a waste of good product, but if you don’t want your mascara to clump, you need to do it. It’ll also ensure the mascara slides smoothly onto your lashes without looking too jagged or bulky.

If you wipe off the wand that attaches the brush to the cap, you can further ensure that absolutely no product gets onto your skin.

Change the Angle and Direction of Your Brush Depending on Where You’re Applying

Change the Angle and Direction of Your Brush Depending on Where You're Applying

Raise your hand if you brush all your lashes in the same direction, in the same way. (Your translator’s hand would be going up right about now.) If you do that, however, you won’t be able to get your lashes to fan out. By changing the direction in which you apply mascara, you can end up with thicker, more beautiful lashes.

First, brush the lashes right above your iris straight up. Next, brush the lashes above the whites so that they fan out from either side. When you do so, make sure to brush from the roots of your lashes–this will ensure that they stay curled. If, however, mascara tends to smear when you apply from the roots, then apply mascara further up and use a clear top coat to firm up the bottom.

When applying mascara to the fine lashes at the corners of your eyes and your bottom lid, turn your brush so that it’s vertical, and you’ll have an easier time.

When Applying Multiple Coats, Brush out Your Lashes with a Comb in Between Each Layer

When Applying Multiple Coats, Brush out Your Lashes with a Comb in Between Each Layer

When you’re looking for extra volume or length, it’s common to apply multiple coats of mascara. Just make sure that when you do layer on product, you brush out your lashes with a comb in between each coat. This will prevent any clumping.

Volumizing mascara and fiber mascara clump up really quickly, so we’d say that you need a comb for those. Combs will also make sure your lashes are all separate from one another, resulting in a more natural look. If, however, alternating between an applicator and comb sounds like too much trouble for you, look for a mascara where the applicator is a comb.

How to Remove Mascara in a Way that Won’t Remove Your Lashes

How to Remove Mascara in a Way that Won't Remove Your Lashes

If it’s tubing mascara, then all you need to do is rinse it off with some hot water–but, otherwise, we’d venture to say that most people rub at their mascara to get it off. And if you were to do that every day, then over time, your lashes might start falling out, leaving you with awkward gaps…

For the sake of your lashes, get a good eye makeup remover and take the time to gently get rid of all your mascara.

<How to Remove Mascara>

  1. Thoroughly wet a cotton pad with eye makeup remover.
  2. Lay the cotton pads on top of your lashes and let it soak for 30 seconds.
  3. Fold the cotton pads around your lashes and gently wipe them off.
  4. Soak a cotton swab in eye makeup remover.
  5. Take the folded cotton pad and line it up against your bottom eyelid.
  6. Close your eyes and run the cotton swab from the roots of your lashes to the tips.
  7. Gently wash off any remaining residue with lukewarm water.

Summary

We rounded up experts and members of our editing department, purchased the 38 most popular Japanese and Korean mascaras, and tested them all.

They say eyes are the windows to the soul. We guess lashes would be the curtains then. Our point is when you change up your mascara, you can change up your whole look. We hope you take this article as inspiration to go out and find a mascara that you can call ideal.
